=====================
MISSION: UNDER ATTACK
=====================
You’re just kind of thrown into the thick of things as the game starts. Press
X to swing the stick and help get the zombies off of Ed. Kill the zombies in
the area and go through the tutorials as they pop up so you can learn how to
play the game better.
Combat is simple enough. Press X to attack and press B to avoid attacks.
Pratice that now against this group of zombies. When they’re dead, it is time
to make your way to the Ranger Station. Start heading up the hill, but be wary
of a zombie or two just off the path. Kill anything that becomes a problem and
hang tight as the game teaches you about stealth.
In State of Decay, simply press B to crouch and go into stealth mode. Keep
moving up the hill, and keep an eye on the bushes to your left. Make your way
to the bushes and stay there. This will make it so you are completely hidden
from the zombies on the other side of the path that are munching down on some
tasty humans. How I know humans are tasty is an entirely other can of worms
that we will not open right now.
Anyway, exit the bush and then you can make a break for the Ranger Station. It
is the big building just across the road. Your mini-map will have a green flag
that shows you where your next objective is, so if you look at that, you can
clearly see that the Ranger Station is your destination. A zombie or two may be
walking around, but there isn’t enough of them for them to be considered a
threat just yet.
Kill any zombies or ignore them and then climb up the stairs. Press Y to open
the door of the Ranger Station and speak with the folks inside.
=====================
MISSION: RIDGE CABINS
=====================
Get to know the group in the Ranger Station and then use the supply box to get
a new weapon, medical supplies, and whatever else. If you want, you can take
the time to barricade the windows here so the people inside can take a break
from having to constantly fight off zombies.
Whatever our decision, eventually you need to leave the Ranger Station. Go out
to the back of the station to the parking lot. From the parking lot, you should
see a big green ? symbol on your mini-map. Make your way there to find two
cabins.
The cabins are devoid of human life, but there are supplies in here. You need
to loot the cabins completely in order to have thoroughly searched them. Hold
Y to loot. You can hold LB to speed up the looting process, but this makes more
noise and will attract more zombies. Once the cabins have been looted, it will
be time to report back to your good friends at the Ranger Station.
====================
MISSION: WATER TOWER
====================
Look at your mini-map and you will see a thick green circle near the station.
They call this a “water tower”, but to me it looks more like a vertical-
standing fuel tank. Nevermind. Head there now and climb up the ladders to the
top. Like with most things in the game, you can hold LB to speed your climb
and descent.
At the top of the ladder, hold LT to initiate the surveying process. Use the
right analog stick to spin the camera around and see all the white ? icons in
the distance. Aim the cursor at the icons to discover them, which will cause
these areas to now appear on your mini-map.
Keep doing this until the meter is filled. Once the meter is full, this means
that you have successfully surveyed everything there is to survey from that
particular vantage point.
=========================
MISSION: DISTANT GUNSHOTS
=========================
Press “back” to open up your map. Notice the green icon somewhat a ways away
from the Ranger Station? Well, that is the location of those mysterious
gunshots you heard earlier. No, I didn’t mention them, but trust me, you
definitely heard them.
Press to designate a waypoint there. It is right by the river. Going there from
the direction of the Ranger Station will make you fall down a couple of steep
rock cliffs to get there, but you shouldn’t take too much damage during this
process, so don’t worry.
As you near the river, you will see Maya, the lady behind the gunshots. She
is shooting at zombies that are stumbling their way across the river. Along
with Ed, run over and smash all their brains in to speed the process along a
little faster, and then return to Maya.
=======================
MISSION: RANGER STATION
=======================
With both Maya and Ed in tow, head to the Ranger Station again. You will have
to climb up the cliffsides that you fell off earlier, and then follow the path
around a few large rocks to be able to get back to the Ranger Station. Kill or
ignore the zombies on the way.
At the Ranger Station, you will find that everyone has been zombified. And
not the fun way (there’s a fun way?). Watch the scenes and recollect your
thoughts. Before leaving, loot the supply chest again to find some ammo that
you can use with guns you gain later on.
===============
MISSION: ESCAPE
===============
Okay, so now you need to leave the Ranger Station. Set your next objective
marker for the area located out of town and start making your way there,
following the beaten path through the woods. You will then come across a
bridge, but it has unfortunately been destroyed.
Facing the bridge, you can find a path to the left that will lead down to the
stream below. Go straight across the stream. Kill the zombies to at least thin
the herd out a bit before you start climbing the rocks to get up the cliff, as
they will climb up right after you and make your life stressful.
As you reach the road, a voice will pop up on the radio…
===============================
MISSION: THE VOICE ON THE RADIO
===============================
Speak with Lily on the radio and then get inside the car that is just sitting
on the side of the road. Use the objective marker to help guide you as you
drive down the highway. You can run over the zombies, but you can just as
easily avoid them.
Keep driving until you see the gates of a church. Turn off the road and drive
to the gates. As you near them, a cut-scene will trigger, and the first part of
your zombie adventure will come to a close.

——————-
CHURCH
——————-
========================
MISSION: HOME SWEET HOME
========================
After the cut-scene, follow Lily around the church. She will show you the
kitchen, the bedrooms, and more. After that, she will lead you outside and the
two of you will walk by Ed as he is receiving the minimal medical attention
this group of survivors has to offer. Walk with Lily to the end of the way and
speak with her some more about the situation.
Follow Lily back inside the church and resume the conversation with her there
to kick off the next mission.
========================
MISSION: LAY OF THE LAND
========================
Finish talking with Lily and then check the supply box for anything worthwile.
If you take too much, the people will start to dislike you since you are not
officially part of the group. Take anything you think will be particularly
beneficial for the moment.
Then head into town. You’ll reach a large radio tower that is guarded by a
barbed wire fence. Hop over the wooden fence that makes up its fourth wall and
then use the dumpsters in the parking lot there to get back over and to the
ladder of the tower.
Use the ladders to reach the very top of the tower. From up here, you can do
your vantage point thing again. Look all around until you find the vet’s office
and then climb off the tower.
===========================
MISSION: FRIENDLY SURVIVORS
===========================
During your adventures in town, you will sometimes be informed of “friendly
survivors” in the area. The first time this happens will be during your first
visit as you look for medical supplies. The survivors will be in a house. Just
go in there and speak with them.
After you talk with them, they will follow you back to the church. Escort them
there and they will join your community.
===================
MISSION: SCAVENGER?
===================
A little ways out of town is a farm, complete with a field overrun with zombies
and an abandoned barn that is currently being scavenged by a fella named
Daniel. Go speak with Daniel and help him loot the bar. What this means is
that you have to hold the zombies back while he runs around and gets all the
stuff he wants, which is indicated by a meter on the left-hand side of the
screen.
After he has scavenged successfully, follow him back into town so he can
regroup with his people. Unfortunately, they are dead. Now you have to defend
this area from zombies. Once that’s done, take him back to the church and he
will join your group.
=======================
MISSION: THE VET CLINIC
=======================
Head to the Vet Clinic when ready. Alan and Sam will be there, but Alan is a
jerk and won’t let you drive a car there. He will outright refuse to do the
mission until you abandon the car. Go to the vet clinic with them and then
bust through one of the windows.
This is a scavenge segment just like the one in the previous mission. The
zombies here will be much higher in number, however, so dig your heels in for
a fight. After they’ve been killed, exit the clinic and start marching your
way back to the church.
On your way to the church, Sam’s sack will split, causing her supplies she
has collected so far to fall to the ground. Alan is a jerk and still refuses
to use a car. Go grab a vehicle and pick up Sam. Then drive the two of you
back to the church.
=========================
MISSION: ZED HUNT (FERAL)
=========================
Meet up with the survivor that wants to go on this hunt. Then you will be
directed to two different houses that may contain a Feral zombie. Feral
zombies are tough to fight, but if you have a firearm, they can be very easy.
So make sure you’re packing heat before starting this mission.
Kill the zombie as soon as you encounter it and then the mission is completed.
=========================
MISSION: SEEK AND DESTROY
=========================
As you’ve probably noticed, various houses throughout the town are marked
red. This means they are infested with zombies, and it is your goal to clear
them of zombies. Doing so gives you the option to set up an outpost at that
location or order survivors to loot it completely.
Screamer type zombies are there, and they will constantly bring in new zombies.
So in order to stop the infestation, you have to clear out the house of the
Screamers. Then focus on getting rid of all the other zombies to get rid of
the infestation. Of course, you need to go speak with the person that is going
to do this mission with you first before you get started with all the zombie
killing antics.
======================
MISSION: ARMY SIGHTING
======================
As you may have noticed, there are oftentimes where you have a bit of downtime
between missions. So you may have to wait a bit for the army to be sighted in
town so that you can do this mission. But once the army has been sighted and
Lily has informed you of this, make your way there immediately.
Speak with the army guy, and then exit the area. The red dots on the mini-map
outline the boundary you have to step over to get out of the military’s way.
=========================
MISSION: ANGER MANAGEMENT
=========================
At some point, Lily will tell you that Alan has gotten all mad about something.
There are multiple ways that you can handle this situation. You can kick him
out of the group, go on a walk and chat with him, or simply choose to ignore
the situation. All of these will have various ramifications on your homebase as
the game progresses.
===========================
MISSION: ZED HUNT (ARMORED)
===========================
A group of survivors want help killing an Armored zombie. Since Lily’s
brother is out there anyway, go help these guys once you know about Lily’s
brother, which is what the next mission is about. Accompany one of them to the
farm area where the armored zombie (zombie in a SWAT uniform) is and then
kill it.
You then have the choice of continuing to scavenge the farmhouse where that
zombie is located and then claiming it as on outpost, or continuing the story.
=======================
MISSION: LILY’S BROTHER
=======================
Lily’s brother is located in an abandoned barn not too far from that last
location. Arrive and then save him and his boyfriend from all the zombies in
the area.
When that’s done, hijack a car nearby and then drive back to the church. Drop
Lily’s brother off with him. Listen to their conversation in the church.
=======================
MISSION: SURVEY REQUEST
=======================
Return to the radio tower from before and perform another survey. This time you
are looking for infestations, special type Zombies (mainly Feral) as well as
hordes of zombies that are traveling throughout the city in mobs.
==========================
MISSION: THE OLD FARMHOUSE
==========================
Lily will get new information about the whereabouts of Doc Hanson, the guy
that is supposedly going to heal Ed. She recommends that you return to the
safehouse at the church to resupply before going, and I highly recommend doing
this, too. If you’ve been using the same survivor for a long time, switch out
for a different one to avoid fatigue. You can swich between Maya and Marcus at
this point in the game.
You will want a gun with plenty of ammo. Maya has a rifle and there should be a
lot of ammo in the supply crate, so if you can be Maya, that is the preferred
route. Otherwise, make a trip to the local gun store in town to make sure you
have a gun and plenty of ammo. Medicine is also recommended.
From there, get a car and make your way to the mission-titular farmhouse. In a
safe location, bring out your map and plan your route. As you will be able to
see, there is a main highway you can follow for a while, and then there is a
path that breaks off the main highway and leads directly to your destination.
Go there now.
Upon arriving at the farmhouse, you will immediately be put to work. You will
be given extra powerful fire bombs, thanks to the Wilkenson speciality
moonshine used to create them. First thing you need to do is board up all the
windows on the bottom floor. The Wilkenson boy will board them back up if
zombies break through, so don’t worry about maintaining the fortifications.
Instead go outside and start killing the zombies. They will mostly ignore you
and go straight for the windows, making it possible to line up shots and
kill multiple with a single bullet. Fire bombs are also very efficient when
they cluster up like that.
As the waves and waves of zombies keep coming, a new Big Bastard-type zombie
will show up as well. These behemoths will charge you and can take a lot of
damage before dying. Shoot them in the head as much as possible and use any
fire bombs as well. Depending on how well you’re trusted at this point (this
will depend on if the Wilkenson boy took any damage from you from fire bomb
tossing), you will be able to replenish your supply from their crate in the
house.
Two Big Bastards and a ton of zombies later, and finally this onslaught will
subside. Go upstairs and then put Eli out of his misery, either with a bullet
through the skull or by doing an execution attack.

HOUSE
——————-
========================
MISSION: HOME SWEET HOME
========================
Upon returning to the home base, you will be prompted to go seek out a new
home. Get in a car and drive to the new area in the adjacent town. Go to the
front yard of the house and then shoot the sick guy. This house is not yours
quite yet. You first need to gather enough building materials as well as
get the right amount of population, but since most of the story missions are
going to take place here from now on, you might as well make the effort to
secure this area as your home base.
===========================
MISSION: SCENE OF THE CRIME
===========================
Watch the scene with the pastor at the home base.
===================
MISSION: MERCY SHOT
===================
Make your choice.
