1. Introduction and Controls
- – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - -
I think first off, it needs to be stated that Killer Instinct has a very unique
pricing structure. It is possible to play every game mode for free, but you
will only be able to use one character. The free character will be rotated out
in updates.
The next option is to simply purchase each character one by one. You can do
this if you want, but if you plan on buying all of the characters, then you
should get one of the two major passes. The first is priced at $20 and it
unlocks all six characters that are currently available, plus players will
be able to download two characters that are being added post-launch for free.
Then there’s the $40 package. This includes all of the characters, the post-
launch characters, numerous DLC costumes, and access to Killer Instinct
Classic, an Xbox One port of the original Killer Instinct game, complete with
its own set of achievements.
This is all considered “season 1″ of Killer Instinct. There are plans to
expand upon the game even further in the future with a “season 2″, which will
require its own guide at a later date.
Most hardcore fighting gamers will be playing the game with a fightstick, but
for those that want to play the game with an Xbox One controller, here is the
full list of controls for Killer Instinct on Xbox One:
LT – Light Kick
LB – Light Punch
RT – Heavy Kick
RB – Heavy Punch
Y – Medium Punch
X – Light Punch
B – Medium Kick
A – Light Kick
D-pad – Move
LS – Move
RS Left/Right – Medium Punch
RS Up – Heavy Punch
RS Down – Grapple
View – Taunt

2. Roster
- – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - -
Seven of the eight characters for the first season of Killer Instinct are now
available. One more character will be added later. If you purchase the $40
Ultra Add-On or even the $20 add-on to the game, then you will be guaranteed
all 8 characters in the game.
When looking at the Command List for each different character, you will notice
that there are three different icons. One is an icon that will be a directional
arrow, indicating which direction you need to input in order to successfully
execute the move.
The other two icons are a boot and a fist. Boots indicate kick attacks while
fists indicate punch attacks. These icons will be color coded. Gray means that
you can use any old type of punch or kick. Blue indicates you need to use a
Light Punch or Light Kick. Yellow means Medium Punch or Medium Kick. And
finally, red means Heavy Punch or Heavy Kick.
Here is a complete moveset for the characters. Please note that the commands
assume that the character is to the left of their opponent.

3. Game Modes
- – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - -
As of the time of this writing, there are four primary game modes in Killer
Instinct for those that are playing the game offline. More game modes will be
added in the future, probably in the “season 2″ DLC release that is expected
for the game.
These game modes are playable across a variety of maps. To unlock the maps,
you have to earn points by playing the game and then purchase them from the
in-game store with the in-game currency.
These are the maps available in the game:
Tiger’s Lair
Crash Site
Alchemical Lab
Devil’s Landing
Assassin’s Cave
Rebel Outpost
Tiger’s Lair is unlocked automatically, regardless of if you’ve played for the
game or not. All of the other arenas cost 500KP. KP is the in-game currency.

======
VERSUS
======
Standard versus mode for any fighting game. You can choose to play against
another player offline, play against the CPU, or even watch two CPUs duke it
out if you wish.
Other factors can be edited, such as time limit and the difficulty level of
the AI. The AI difficulty levels come in these forms (from easiest to hardest):
Noob
Easy
Medium
Hard
Killer
Kyle

========
SURVIVAL
========
Survival tasks you with beating one opponent after another indefinitely with
whichever character that you choose to use. Every time you advance five rounds,
you are given the opportunity to skip ahead to that round the next time that
you play, but this will cost KP points. For example, if you want to skip to
round 5, it will cost 25KP, but skipping to round 10 will cost 75KP.
Survival Mode has its own set of difficulty settings. Here they are, once
again listed from easiest to hardest:
Beginner
Veteran
Champion

DOJO
====
A lot of gamers out there simply aren’t good at fighting games, in large part
because they don’t really know how to play them. Killer Instinct offers the
Dojo Mode to teach players the basics and the more advanced maneuvers in the
game.
The game holds your hand and explains how to do every maneuver. If you need to
re-read the last text box that popped up on the screen, press the View button.
Use this checklist to help you keep track of which Dojo lessons that you need

PRACTICE
========
Found in most fighting games, “Practice” just lets you fight against the AI
without having to really worry about health bars or any of that jazz. The AI
can be set on a variety of difficulty settings to meet your needs. Practice is
a great way to continue to practice the moves you learned in the Dojo.

Xbox Live play is obviously a big part of the Killer Instinct package. There
are three different options available for online multiplayer:
Exhibition Match
Ranked Match
Leaderboards
Exhibition Matches are not ranked. Those that just want to play the game for
fun can go to this game mode. Ranked Matches are for players that want to be
scored as they win and lose online. The competition is generally stiffer in the
Ranked Match category. Leaderboards are self-explanatory; see the rankings of
everyone around the world!

5. Fight Archive
- – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - -
As players continue to play the game and win matches, they will earn KP that
is the currency in Killer Instinct. KP can be spent to purchased various things
for customization purposes, which directly ties in to the Fight Archive
section of the game.
You can edit your profile that is seen by other players encountered online
through Xbox Live. Other content, such as your statistics, the different
titles you can apply based on your accolades from playing Killer Instinct,
and also check out replays of your greatest in-game achievements.
Speaking of achievements, a quick way to get to the achievements of Killer
Instinct is through the Fight Archive. Alternatively, you can simply say,
“Xbox Go to Achievements” and you will be taken to the achievement menu as
well. Just click on the Killer Instinct logo and you’re good to go.
The KI Store also houses Concept Art that can be purchased. Upon purchasing
that Concept Art, you can check it out in the Fight Archive. Until you
purchase your first piece of Concept Art with KP, then this option will not
be selectable.

KI Store refers both to content that needs to be purchased with real money
as well as content that can be purchased with KP. Again, KP is earned simply by
playing the game and doing well.
The KI Store is split up into several categories, all with their own pieces of
content. More content will be made available on the KI Store in the future as
the game is updated and subsequent DLC “seasons” of Killer Instinct are
released.

=======
PREMIUM
=======
Premium refers to content that needs to be purchased with real world money.
You can purchase the Combo Breaker Add-On, which will get you the first six
characters in the game and two that are being added post-launch. The Combo Breaker
Add-On is worth $20.
Ultra Edition is available for $40. The Ultra Edition Add-On will unlock all
of the characters (including the post-release ones), DLC costumes, various
accessories, and the kicker, access to Killer Instinct Classic! Killer Instinct
Classic is an Xbox One remake of the original Killer Instinct game, complete
with its own set of achievements, characters, stages, and everything else.
Alternatively, if you know for a fact that you are only interested in specific
characters or add-ons, you can choose to purchase each character individually
for $5 a pop.
As of the time of this writing, players can also purchase the Ancient Tiger
Bronze Set accessories for Jago, the Steampunk Set for Sabrewulf, the Alien
Tech set for Glacius, and Orchid’s Retro Costume.

I’ve already listed the Arenas above, but here they are again. The Arenas can
be purchased individually using KP. These are the arenas in the game and their
price:
Alchemical Lab – 500 KP

SKIN
====
Every character has two skins unlocked automatically after you have acquired
them. This is so two players can choose the same character and look different
from one another. Alternate skins can be unlocked with KP and by completing
certain in-game objectives. The KP required to purchase the skin is on the
left, and the objectives needed to complete to unlock the right to purchase
the skin in the first place is on the right.
For future reference, this is how the rest of the KI Store will be organized as
well.

Characters can be customizaed based on three different categories that can be
mixed and matched. There’s headgear, a weapon, and then leg gear.
In addition, all of the characters can have up to six different skins that you
can unlock.
These accessories and skins are purchased by completing specific objectives
and then spending KP. KP is earned simply by playing the game and winning
matches. On the main menu of the game, there’s Trials which are objectives
that can be completed for bonus KP.

- – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - -
Arcade Mode has been added to Killer Instinct in the latest update for the
game. Arcade Mode doesn’t do much beyond giving you another mode to battle
the AI. It is in the form of a ladder, and you do get some extra little scenes
with the characters.

10. Killer Instinct Classic
- – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - -
Those that choose to pay the full $40 for the “Ultra Add-On” version of Killer Instinct will be treated to a download of a remade version of the original arcade game. This is Killer Instinct Classic, and for all intents and purposes, it is an entirely stand-alone game from the Xbox One Killer Instinct game.
This is a remake of a game that already exists. Because of this, there’s no need to create its own, in-depth guide. Instead consider this section of the main Killer Instinct guide the go-to for everything that you need to know about Killer Instinct Classic.

PLAY
====
Three game modes can be found in this section of the game. Basically, Killer Instinct Classic features a ladder, arcade style sort of experience. You pick a character, and then you fight all the other characters in the game (including a clone of yourself) until you’ve been through all of the characters. It is at that point that you win!
There are two flavors to this style of play. There is a “Final Version” and a “Classic Version”. The “Final Version” is the 1.5D version of the original Killer Instinct. This is considered the most polished version of the game. Classic Version is the 1.4 version of the game. It retains glitches and other issues that were patched out in the 1.5D version.
Finally, there’s Training. This is what you’d expect. It’s basically the same as the “Practice” mode from the main game. Training comes with its own gimmick though that can be pretty useful. If you want to rewind gameplay at any time during this mode, simply press the “View” button on the Xbox One controller.
=======
OPTIONS
=======
Lots of important stuff here. You can adjust the controls, change the difficulty setting, display settings, volume controls, switch your Xbox Live profile that you have currently signed in…
If you are having difficulty with the game, I recommend coming here and lowering the difficulty for sure. It is a great game, but not if you are finding it frustrating. Likewise, if you are finding the game too easy, then don’t be afraid to crank that difficulty up a little bit.

Killer Instinct Classic is a 100% digital release. Because of this, that means you don’t get a fancy instructional booklet that comes with the game (though most games nowadays lack these as it is V_V). Go here to access the virtual instruction manual for the game, including an introduction, explanations about the modes, the controls, characters, and more.
