- – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - -
This guide is designed to explain the various functions of Mario Kart 8 and
help you master the game by offering tips, revealing shortcuts, and also
providing strategy for the various races.

2. Racers
- – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - -
Mario Kart 8 offers the most extensive roster of racers in the series to
date. New racers can be unlocked all the time by completing cups in Grand
Prix mode.

Not only does each racer have their own stats, but the karts can be customized
based on body type, wheel, and glider that the kart or motorcycle is made out
of. The stats of each character has an influence on how the parts of the
vehicle effect the vehicle as well.

To check the stats of a vehicle, first pick your character. Then press the
+ button. Cycle through the different parts with the + button on so that you
can see how the different parts influence the stats of that particular
racer.

This is a list of the racers available in Mario Kart 8 in alphabetical order:

Baby Daisy
Baby Luigi
Baby Mario
Baby Peach
Bowser

Koopa Troopa

And here is a list of the different parts available for karts. Kart parts

3. Grand Prix
- – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - -
The heart of Mario Kart 8 is the Grand Prix mode. In this mode, players can
choose one of three speeds:

50cc
100cc
150cc

Basically, 50cc equals “Easy” mode, whereas 100cc is “Medium” and 150cc
represents “Hard”. Each difficulty has the same cups and the same tracks
within them. However, it is worth going through on each speed setting as every
cup that is won unlocks a new character until you’ve completed all of the
cups and have unlocked every character in the game.

4. Time Trials
- – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - -
Mario Kart 8 also includes a Time Trials mode. In this mode, you can race
against whoever has the best time on the track in the world right now
using online data, or you can race against the ghost data of a Mario Kart 8
developer.

There are a few choices available to you in regards to Time Trials. You can
simply race solo and try to get the best time possible on the chosen track,
and then upload that data to the Nintendo Network for other users to download.

You can also choose to race against ghosts, view the ghosts, and take on
the online ghosts. A good strategy for eventual overcoming the ghost data of
the Nintendo developers or other people that have high times on the track is
to mimic what they are doing on the track.

Below you will find the Nintendo developer ghost data for each track in the
game, as well as their times on each specific lap, how they chose to customize
their vehicle, and the characters they chose for the track.

5. VS Race
- – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - -
The heart and soul of Mario Kart is the competitive multiplayer. VS Race is
where players can go to play offline multiplayer in Mario Kart 8. There will
be 12 racers total, with up to four players able to play on a single Wii U
console.

Various rules can be customized. You can make it so there are no items at all,
change the intensity of the COMs, and how many races you have to complete.
The lowest amount of races you need to complete for a VS Race is three.

For a track listing, refer to the “Grand Prix” section of the guide.

6. Battle
- – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - -
In Mario Kart 8, Battle Mode is different than what you’re probably used to
from the other Mario Kart games. There are no arenas, but rather, players just
battle on the same tracks from the main game.

Each player has three balloons. Players get points based on how many balloons
they knock off of other players, and by how many balloons they still have by
the time the game ends.

Items are used to destroy the balloons of other players. If you lose all of
your balloons, you can continue to ride around the track as a ghost and keep
eliminating the other players. You won’t get points for this, however.

Most games of Battle end due to a time limit as opposed to every other racer
being eliminated.

7. Multiplayer
- – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - -
Multiplayer in Mario Kart 8 is represented on a number of fronts. Players can
play multiplayer offline, online with one player, and online with two-player
split-screen. All of the game modes are mixed together when doing matchmaking.

In matchmaking, there will be four choices before every race. The choices will
be in the form of three tracks and then the option for a random track. After
everyone has made their choices, a track will then be selected at random out
of the tracks that everyone nominated.

In multiplayer, players can go through the Grand Prix mode and earn trophies,
battle each other in a VS Race, or do a few rounds of Battle Mode.

8. Mario Kart TV
- – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - -
A new feature making its debut in Mario Kart 8 is called Mario Kart TV.
Utilizing the Nintendo Network and YouTube, Mario Kart TV is a video service
in which players can record their best moments in Mario Kart 8 and then share
them with the world.

In the Mario Kart 8 menu, you can choose to watch the most recent videos that
have been uploaded, the most popular videos, and those that have been uploaded
by people you have on your Nintendo Network friends list.

If you want to add a particular race to your “Favorites” for viewing later,
you have the option at the end of each race. For about 30 seconds, you are
given the opportunity to press the + button. This will add a star to the race
you just completed. You can only have six stars distributed at any time.

9. Hints and Tips
- – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - -
Here are some hints and tips to help you become a better racer in Mario Kart
8!

Mastering the art of drifting is necessary for success in Mario Kart 8. When
drifting, which is done using the right trigger, wiggle the left stick to
the left and right. This will build up a speed boost. Blue flames coming from
your tires means a regular speed boost, but orange flames indicate an even
better speed boost.

Save the horn. The horn item is extremely useful, but it becomes the most
useful if you’re in first place. It is the only item that can knock the
dreaded blue shell out of the sky.

Coins will help you go slightly faster, and they are also good for unlocking
new vehicle parts. You can hold up to 10 coins at a time under standard
rules.

Communicating online is a bit tricky in Mario Kart 8, but not impossible. When
in a lobby, you can press A and have a selection of pre-made chatting phrases
to utilize.

Go off the beaten path. Shortcuts in Mario Kart 8 are very easy to find and are
mainly just right off the main track.

Ram into other players when your tires are in anti-gravity mode. When your
tires are in anti-gravity mode, you can ram into other players and objects in
the enivronment to actually get a speed boost. If your tires aren’t in anti-
gravity mode, then hitting other players will just cause you trouble.

Use green and red shells to not just hit enemies, but to get obstacles out of
the way to stop green and red shells from hitting you. Toss the shells behind
your back to send them flying at any other shells that may be coming your way.
You will be notified when a shell is coming at you, but a shell danger
indicator that pops up on the screen.
