NHL 15 marks the first time that the NHL series has made its way to the eighth generation of gaming consoles.
In the game of hockey, you will be placed in a wide variety of different situations on the ice. Because of this, there is a fairly wide variety of controls to keep in mind when playing the game.
The following information about the game’s controls was taken directly from the manual, which can be found by either pushing in the touchpad on the PS4 or by saying “Xbox, Help” on Xbox One. You must be connected to the EA Sports servers to access the manual in-game, which means you will need to have downloaded the latest update for the game. You can also download the manual from the EA Sports website.

When you start the game for the first time, you will be asked to choose the way that you’d like to play. You have three options in this regard. One, you can choose the EASY option. This will have you use the face buttons when playing the game, you will be on Rookie difficulty, and the action will be more Arcade in nature. The second option is STANDARD. This has you use the skill stick for most functions, the difficulty is on Pro, and the game is in Simulation mode instead. The third option is CUSTOM. You can choose to customize all the game settings here instead of just sticking with one, so you can mix and match the face button control scheme with a higher difficulty, switch out arcade mode with simulation mode, etc.
Once you’ve made your selection, you are immediately thrust into a game between the New York Rangers and the Los Angeles Kings. You can choose either one of the two teams to play as. It is a full hockey game using the type of gameplay that you selected at the outset.

This is what you select if you want to jump into a game immediately without having to worry about any of the extra fluff.
Simply choose whether you want to be home or away. Assign whether you want to verse someone else locally or play against the CPU, and then choose your team.
There are multiple leagues in the game. Each league has its own set of teams, and each team has its own scores. The teams are rated based on how good they are at Offense, Defense, and their Goalie ranking.
You will see three scores below next to each team name. The scores indicate from left to right, the OFF, DEF, and GOA.

3. Play Online
- – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - -
Online play is a staple of any sports game worth its salt, and of course, NHL 15 features online gameplay. Online can be found in the Hockey Ultimate Team mode as well, but for the vanilla versus mode, this is where you want to go.
You can choose to do a Ranked Match, play with a friend, customize the matchmaking to your liking, and check out your stats.
On the bottom of the screen, you will see how many players are online and how many of those online players are participating in the versus mode.

4. Be A GM
- – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - -
The first thing that you do is name your GM. At that point, you have to choose which team to manage.
The teams have different starting salaries to work with. Here are the teams and their salaries:
Anaheim Ducks – $59,790,000
Arizona Coyotes – $58,405,000
Boston Bruins – $68,335,000
Buffalo Sabres – $60,370,000
Calgary Flames – $55,690,000
Carolina Hurricanes – $63,065,000
Chicago Blackhawks – $81,040,000
Colorado Avalanche – $65,690,000
Columbus Blue Jackets – $57,515,000
Dallas Stars – $64,945,000
Detroit Red Wings – $60,735,000
Edmonton Oilers – $67,220,000
Florida Panthers – $59,975,000
LA Kings – $68,015,000
Minnesota Wild – $58,900,000
Montreal Canadiens – $65,605,000
Nashville PRedators – $56,540,000
New Jersey Devils – $66,240,000
New York Islanders – $55,745,000
New York Rangers – $70,910,000
Ottawa Senators – $56,780,000
Philadelphia Flyers – $72,790,000
Pittsburgh Penguins – $67,945,000
San Jose Sharks – $62,970,000
St. Louis Blues – $66,330,000
Tampa Bay Lightning – $69,310,000
Toronto Maple Leafs – $66,605,000
Vancouver Canucks – $65,605,000
Washington Capitals – $68,120,000
Winnipeg Jets – $62,440,000
Make your team selection. Choose whether or not you want the salary cap to be on, and then edit the rules and settings to your liking. Then you are ready to start your career.
When your career starts, you will see the various options that you are used to in sports games. You can see stats, check the calendar, and sim to the next game that features your team. However, Be A GM mode also has an extra tile on the right of the screen.
This tile has Required tasks as well as Optional tasks. For example, the first time you start Be A GM, you will have one Required task and three Optional tasks. The required task will be to advance out of the current day. The optional tasks will be to assign a scout, trade players, and assign players.
One tab over and you will find the activity feed and latest scores.
On the third tab, you will find where you can trade your players, improve their stats, sign new players, and more. You can also manage the budget here by altering player contracts and re-sign players to extended contracts. Your roster can be managed here as well with the option to call up and send down players.
Finally, you can edit the settings of your League and save your game in the final tab.

5. Be A Pro
- – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - -
In Be A Pro, the first thing that you do is create your character. You give them a first name and a last name first of all.
The next thing on the to-do list is to choose the position that your created player will play. The choices are:
Center
Defense
Goalie
Left Wing
Right Wing
These different positions will allow you to in turn choose what type of player you want.
CENTER/LEFT WING/RIGHT WING
——
2 Way Forward
Enforcer
Grinder
Playmaker
Power Forward
Sniper
DEFENSE
——-
2 Way Defender
Defensive Defenseman
Enforcer
Offensive Defenseman
GOALIE
——
Butterfly
Hybrid
Stand-Up
You then have the option to edit the appearance of your player or you can stick with the default created player that EA Sports has chosen for you. You can change the equipment they start with as well as edit more general info about them, such as weight, height, and where they live.
Completing this process will earn you a trophy.
The next thing on the agenda is the draft. You have two options when it comes to the draft. You can choose to pick which team you want to be on manually. This will start you out with 2,000 EXP. However, if you let yourself be drafted by a random team, then you can start out with anywhere from 1,550 EXP to 3,000 EXP.
When you’ve either been drafted to a team or if you’ve chosen manually which
team you want to be on, your next step is to spend that EXP on the various
abilities of your player. Your player will start out at a weak 68 OVR score,
which is not even close to good.
You can spend EXP on the following attributes:
Defense
Physical
Puck Skills
Senses
Shooting
Skating
Depending on what kind of player you chose, you will be able to improve some
attributes, but you won’t be able to improve others. You may have more EXP
available in some categories than others. You won’t increase your 68 OVR just
yet, but you will be able to improve at least a little bit a variety of the
different skills that are there and you can somewhat tailor it to the way that
you play the game.
Now is the start of the season. You can simulate to the next season game in
which your character will be playing. In the meantime, you can check out the
“Season Expectations”. These are challenge that you can shoot for and you will
be graded on. Obviously you want to either complete the challenges or get as
close to completing the challenges as possible.
The challenges will differ depending on what kind of player you decided to
create.
These menus also allow you to edit your player, check your EXP, see the
upcoming games, look at the activity feed, check out stats, save your game,
and more. It is at this point that you are ready for the Be A Pro career mode
and can start playing games!

6. Hockey Ultimate Team
- – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - -
Starting Hockey Ultimate Team, from now on referred to as HUT, your first step is to name your team. The team name has to be a minimum of 5 characters in length and most only contain numbers and alpha numeric codes. That means no underscores and no spaces. Your team name can’t be the same as anyone else’s, or else you won’t be able to create your team.
After teaming your team, create an abbreviation for the team. The default abbreviation is simply HUT.
Once you’ve created your team name, open your starter pack. You’ll be rewarded with a ton of cards to get your started in HUT. Choose to “build your team”, and then you will be given a starting lineup. At that point, you can start playing the game!
Getting into the game for the first time will get you 25 bonus coins to spend. However, every day that you go to HUT, you can get more coins simply for booting up this game mode. You have to come back subsequent days in order to get these bonus rewards though.
Day 1 – 25
Day 2 – 100
Day 3 – 250
Day 4 – 500
Day 5 – 750
Day 6 – 1,000
Day 7 – 1,250
===
HUB
===
The hub is the central area for HUT. Here you can check on your daily rewards, check the team of the week, look at stats, and eventually, once hockey season starts, you can see the TOTW. TOTW will be added every Wednesday.
====
PLAY
====
You have two choices in HUT. You can choose to start an Online Season and play against other players around the world, or you can choose to play the game in single-player Solo mode.

7. NHL Moments Live
- – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - -
NHL Moments Live is a mode that features exciting moments from the real-world NHL and challenges the player to recreate those moments throughout four difficulty levels of Rookie, Pro, All-Star, and Superstar.
As of the time of this writing, there are only NHL Moments Live events from the 2013-2014 season. There will be ones added from the 2014-2015 season later on. When those become available, simply go to the NHL Moments Live screen and press Triangle. Then you will have the opportunity to download these new moments.
The moments put you in the shoes of the team that won each game. You will start the game at particular moments, usually when the team you are playing is trailing behind and you are to recreate what they did in real life, which is come back and win the game.

8. Practice

In Practice mode, what you do is practice offense in the game. You start with a single person (on the team that you designated as your favorite) on ice with only two other people there, the goalie on the opposite team and your team’s goalie as well.
This is mainly to practice shots, but it’s actually really helpful, despite it being limited to offense only.
I recommend spending time here to really practice your shots.
