Destiny Prison of Elders Guide: How to Easily Beat Urrox, the Flame Prince

Preparation

Urrox, the Flame Prince, scion of Oryx (Hive sure do love their titles), is one of the more challenging bosses within the Destiny‘s Prison of Elders activity if you approach him the wrong way. He is powerful, as are all the other bosses, but it’s how he manages to affect the arena that makes him extremely dangerous. In order to survive, a guardian must be prepared.

First things first, this is a Hive boss fight that takes place within the Prison of Elders’ Hive arena. That means Solar weapons will seriously come in handy. If there happens to be a specific burn as the modifier, then make sure to bring a weapons of that type as well, but still have somebody able to cover the Solar shields. Ammo Synthesis for weapons with low ammo counts (such as Heavy Weapons) are a must as well, since you’ll have to dish out a ton of damage.

Some weapons to consider are Vision of Confluence, Vex Mythoclast, Murmur, Gjallarhorn, Hunger of Crota, and Abyss Defiant. The last two come from the Crota’s End raid and can do extra damage to Hive enemies. In fact, if you have anything from Destiny The Dark Below‘s raid, there is a good chance that it will come in handy, so choose your favorite and let it rain death.

Urrox has an ability that burns the ground within the entire arena for ten seconds. For this reason, adjusting your guardian’s jump to provide the maximum amount of air time as possible is crucial. Hunters may have a more difficult time in this regard, but if you time your jumps just right then you’ll receive minimal damage.

A Defender’s bubble with the Blessings of Light Perk is one of the best skills for this fight. Not only does it help anyone struggling with the whole burning floor fiasco, but it will also play a critical part in holding down a safe area. For Hunters, Gunslinger is the go to subclass for taking out powerful adds and helping with the boss. Since it is a Hive arena, Sunsinger Warlocks can help control the arena as well, although Voidwalkers can still hold their own and contribute to crowd control.

Step Into the Fire

In order to increase your fireteam’s chances of survival, you’re going to want to hold down a specific area in the arena. Once you enter the Prison of Elders’ Hive arena immediately make your way to the left along with your fireteam. There is an area with a large generator and a low hanging wall that will prevent any damage from the front. Now, all you need to do is cover the sides.

The fight with Urrox includes large waves of additional enemies, but there is a surprising amount of time between the waves, so thinning them out once they appear is a great idea for two reasons. First, the waves come with Ogres which can be a pain in the behind when trying to maintain cover. Two, thrall and cursed thrall tend to make surviving the burning floor hell.

Clearing out the arena allows the fireteam ten seconds of peace while avoiding the Searing Flames effect on the ground. During this time, all focus should be on staying alive, and having to deal with threats can make ten seconds feel like an eternity. If you are unable to clear out all of the adds for whatever reason, try and focus on the Thrall and Cursed Thrall. While everyone can be considered a threat in the Prison of Elders, the Thrall are the only Hive that seem to be bold enough to get right in your guardian’s face.

One other thing to worry about are burn modifiers. Solar Burn is pretty much the game handing you victory on a silver platter, but Arc Burn can spell out disaster for a fireteam. Urrox, like all long range Hive Knights, does Arc Damage with a considerable amount of splash. Even without a burn he can kill most guardians in about two hits, with a burn it could be instant death, even if you think you may have dodged a direct hit. Add to that the Wizards, Knights, and Acolytes and you’ll need to make sure someone covers each side at all times with only one focused on the boss.

Urrox Falls in the Prison of Elders

Now that you have your setup and arena management all situated, it’s time to take down the boss himself. There are two specific things to note about Urrox, the first is that he has no shield, and the second is that he has a ridiculous amount of health. There’s a good chance that he has more health than anyone you’ve faced in Destiny up until this point, so be prepared for a long fight.

As mentioned before, there are a lot of adds that should be taken out first. Two guardians is more than enough to handle that task, while the person with the strongest weapon should focus solely on this Prison of Elders boss. Once the additional enemies are dispatched, everyone should focus on Urrox with their heavy weapons if they have them or whatever their hardest hitting weapon is. Stay locked onto him until he grows angry and starts to burn the floor.

Once the floor starts burning do not shoot at all. Shooting causes a guardian to fall faster unless you have a Sunsinger Warlock with the Angel of Light perk (it allows the Warlock to hover in the air while aiming for a short time). The primary focus should be on staying alive. After the ten seconds are up, repeat the above steps until victory. If you’re a Prison of Elders pro, you could have two members focus on Urrox while one person covers the sides. But, if you notice they are struggling, switch back to one person on Urrox and two people watching the sides. It will take longer, but it is a much easier experience.

After a few rounds of the-floor-is-lava, victory will be obtained and your fireteam can claim its spoils from the Crystal Barrow beneath the Prison of Elders.
