Arkham Knight Dual Play Mode is Not Meant for Multiplayer
Batman Arkham Knight is probably the last in the series for developer Rocksteady, but the developer clarified that they never wanted it to be a multiplayer game, but rather introduced a dual play mode to allow the players to switch between characters.
When the developers announced the dual play mode, a lot of gamers who are new to the scenario got extremely confused. Many assumed that it is going to allow them to play as Batman, Robin, Cat Woman, among many other characters. When multiple characters are shown, obviously one would assume that they will be able to control them and play along with friends. But, Rocksteady had a different idea about this scenario because they never wanted players to stray away from being the Batman.
Instead, they wanted to give people more choices during the combat and ways to boost the storytelling method which paved way for this new mode.
Dual Play is not Multiplayer
If you have already played Grand Theft Auto V developed by Rockstar games, you will hardly have any questions about the dual play mode. It works quite similar to the character switching style introduced for the first time in next gen gaming by Rockstar. There are three different characters and the story will be told in different perspectives so that you could better understand the narration.
A similar tactics will be used in Batman Arkham Knight as well, but instead of having a loading screen or being able to play as a completely new character, it only allows you to play as another character when the game allows you to.
Play as Robin or Nightwing
Each special character has been assigned to a specific level in the game. For example, Batman could team up with Nightwing only when he is going to take down Penguin. The combat is highly fluid and there are no breaks when switching between characters in the dual play mode. You could create a combo with Batman, switch to fight as Nightwing and come back to the original character to continue where you left off. Meanwhile, he will be able to defend himself against the thugs without any difficulty and no supervision is required.
Rocksteady clarified that multiplayer has never been their thing and the team that has been working on the Arkham series for so long are obsessed with the single player story based missions that they never wanted to go out of it. Even single player games like Assassin’s Creed tried co-op with Unity, but it was barely successful. It didn’t have the necessary elements to make it a compelling co-operative title and Arkham Knight didn’t wish to risk something so new, when the franchise is coming to a close.
However, they have made the world completely open, allowing the player to move around as Batman and explore Arkham like never before. There are no loading screens at all and there is even a bat mobile that allows you to easily cruise the huge city. The dual play mode allows only two characters at once on screen.
