When you gain a level, you get stat points with which to improve your statistics. Any of them will be of benefit, but two of them will be more beneficial than the other two. First, improve the one which will help you finish your fight as quickly as possible, which is your attack. This one is especially useful because the gear that increases your attack power generally costs more than the other gear that you can buy.
The second most useful one to improve is your health, because, simply put, you will be able to last longer without being knocked out. The other two stats, slam and stamina, are useful too, but slams happen once or twice per fight, at best, so they generally won’t be of much benefit.
Stamina will keep you from getting knocked dizzy, and is useful if you can’t get the timing of the attacks down, but get the timing of the attacks down and you won’t have to worry about stamina so much.
If you notice, the game sometimes doesn’t read swipes and it gets tough to attack when it decides to quit on you, but there’s a pattern to it. The game reads swipes on the top half of the screen MUCH better than it reads the swipes on the bottom half of the screen, so swipe on the top half of the screen when you attack and they will be more likely to be read.
Swipe fairly rapidly to keep your opponent from attacking, but pick the attacks that will land the most quickly. Which attacks go the quickest depend on what weapon you are using, and often, some attacks will be more accurate than others. For example, left swipes will be more accurate and more effective than right swipes when you are using the bat or other swinging weapons.
