Being a fan of survival horror games and scary movies there's something I need to get off my chest today. And that is I'm not an avid fan of movies based on survival horror games strange as it may sound. The fact is though that I know I'm far from being alone. Unfortunately within the past decade or so Hollywood has dashed the hopes and dreams of people like myself who anticipated their favorite survival horror games to birth something decent on the silver screen only for it to turn into something ugly as Rosemary's baby.
To prove my point let's do a mini recap of some of these actrocious letdowns over the years. Let's start with Resident Evil from over a decade ago. Now to be fair the movie had some elements of a genuinely good zombie movie but it was cheap, shoddy and had not hear. Next is Silent Hill and just like Resident Evil it had it's saving grace but even this wasn't enough to save it from the hellhole which it belongs. The movie had a promising plot but it was a convoluted mess and there were pointless flashbacks throughout the film that in sum lent nothing to the mystery of silent hill. As bad as these movies were they are not the worst of the survival horror movie genre. The following though are the nightmarish bane of bad movie making whose ever growing tentacles have managed to squeeze out any hope of recovery for the survival horror game genre.
Take for instance Doom which was nothing but a dull copycat of Aliens. Alone in the Dark had a plot which hardly had anything to do with the classic game series along with monotonous background scenes. Silent Hill: Revelation 3D was plain annoying with no ability to induce any suspense or horror whatsoever and House of the Dead was just downright abysmal. Now if that wasn't enough let's move on to the Resident Evil sequels. Resident Evil: Extinction couldn't even get the location right for a zombie move. Bright open spaces in the scorching desert do not make for a scary zombie flick, sorry. Resident Evil:Afterlife was full of silly over the top 3D effects. And Resident Evil: Retribution seemed like a bunch of action scenes filmed together while on a tram ride through Universal Studios.
Okay, I think that's enough. Overall I just think Hollywood cares more about making a buck than delivering substance that would be pleasing to fans. How about you? If you have any comments please tell me what you think.
