Have you wanted to backup your Wii games, but didn’t know how…or even know what options were available?
Then again, maybe you’ve been so immersed in playing your Zelda or Call of Duty: Black Ops game that you never thought about backing it. But let me ask, what would you do if you took your console and favorite Wii games with you on a trip and it all got lost or worse…stolen? Or, what would happen if you lent your games to a friend who promised to return them…and your console back to you, but that was six months ago and you haven’t heard from him since?
What do you do then?
Well, when it comes to replacing the Wii console I can’t really help you other than suggest finding a gently used one off of Craigs list or on Ebay. Or, you may just want to breakdown and by a whole new Wii unit. Totally up to you, but that action still leaves the question about the games. What do you do about all those games?
When it comes to backing up your Wii games, you essentially have 3 options. They are provided below along with the pros and cons associated with taking each specific route.
1. By additional copies of the game – This being an option is probably a no brainer. Of course you could go out and purchase an extra “new” copy of one of your favorite games. The positive thing about this action is that you have a high quality backup that has never been used. The negative thing about this option is obviously…the cost. Depending on the number of games involved, you could be spending a small, okay who are you kidding, LARGE fortune buying extra copies of all of your favorite Wii games that you have on hand.
2. Install a Modchip – This is a course of action many Wii game players have gone with and in theory, the concept is very simple. To implement this strategy, in short you have to purchase some hardware, open your console, install the hardware, and then using free DVD copying software you can download off the web, go ahead and copy your Wii game.
On one hand this would appear to be an excellent route because the cost…short term, is minimal. However, here are the cons with choosing this option. One is that you need to be sure and install the hardware correctly or you won’t be able to make copies. In some instances, even if you do install the modchip correctly, the games still don’t copy right or the copy is in poor quality. Next, by opening your Wii game, you are no longer able to install updates to it. And lastly, the copies you make are still only able to be played on your Wii console.
3. Implement “Softmodding” – When is comes to copying Wii games, this route I have to admit is the one I recommend. It simply involves purchasing some software that you can download from the internet. The negative to this action is that you can’t use the free DVD burning software offered on the web. You would have to purchase the software that copies your Wii games. But the price is actually minimal ($30)…especially when compared to the worth of what you get from buying the software.
Here are some of the positives though… 1. You don’t have to mess with your console or risk damaging it 2. Your backup game copy can be played on any console 3. Your game copies are high quality not letting on whatsoever that the game you are playing isn’t the original. 4. The software allows you backup a variety of game types…not just the Wii games
With these choices for how to backup Wii games, it seems as though the choice is obvious. If you want to backup your Wii games, softmodding is your best way to go.
