The Terran race has sometimes been considered the easiest for most new players to manage, but that fact by no means negates the necessity of learning the best Ghost tactics. Many players never manage to learn how to effectively utilize these versatile units, and their strategies suffer as a result of that neglect. A proper understanding of Ghosts and their strategic value is critical to any Terran player's long-term success on the battlefield.
Ghosts are the Terran answer to the other races' spell-caster units. Their cloaking abilities are critical for many strategies, and their Snipe and EMP casts can wreak havoc on enemy forces. Moreover, Ghosts can also be used to call down tactical nuke strikes that can quickly shift the tide of battle in the Terran player's favor.
With the increasing po[censored] rity of High Templar units, Ghosts have taken on an even greater role in the game. This is due to the fact that High Templars are particularly susceptible to EMP attacks, since these pulses effectively negate any High Templar's ability to use its Psionic Storm or Feedback ability. The EMP drains energy from the High Templar and prevents it from casting.
EMP can also be used by a player to reduce his own forces' energy levels to prevent them from being completely destro[censored] by High Templar Feedback. This is becoming a more common strategy used by Terrans who are only now adjusting to the new po[censored] rity of High Templar assaults. The Ghosts also serve as an effective counter to Archons, since 4 EMP strikes dropped on an Archon will leave them susceptible to being destro[censored] in two subsequent Ghost attacks.
Players should also learn how to use the Snipe attack, since it ignores armor and inflicts a consistent 45 damage. Its low energy cost makes this an ability that should be used early and often in any battle. It is made all the more effective by the fact that most top units are susceptible to its effects. Because a cloaked Ghost unit can take on multiple biological units using only Snipe, these troops are a great way to wage asymmetrical war.
The Nuclear option is an important one for players to understand as well. A Ghost with nukes can be effective for both offensive and defensive purposes. When the Terran finds himself being rushed by an opponent, a well-placed nuclear strike on his own base can often provide him the time he needs to marshal sufficient forces to drive off the assailants.
Alternatively, Nukes can be used against mineral lines, enemy bases, and other targets of the Terran player's choosing. Savvy players recognize, however, that the nuclear option is not needed in most scenarios involving Ghosts. In general, the combined benefits of cloaking, Snipe, and EMP are usually more than sufficient to deal with most enemy threats.
Most Terran players who regularly utilize their Ghosts as they were meant to be used recognize that they are basically high-powered assassins. That recognition and a little bit of creative thought can help any player to develop his own Starcraft 2 Ghost Tactics and begin to enjoy greater success with these critical units.
