Using the Zerg in Starcraft 2 is sometimes hard but rewarding, especially if you know how to use your units and buildings well. The Zerg units are rather fast but have less hit points compared to units from other races. However, despite this, you can easily conquer your opponents if you know how to utilize all units and buildings properly. Knowing Greater Spire tactics is a good stepping stone towards mastering the art of using Zerg units.
The Greater Spire is basically an upgraded Spire. So we can start by looking at the Spires for you to understand better. The Spire is a second tier structure in the Zerg swarm. This structure enables you to make Mutalisks and Corruptors. It also allows you to research upgrades for the air units, which improves their attack and Armor. It is a very delicate building and takes a lot of time to construct. It is this structure that is upgraded to a Greater Spire once the Hive has been created. It is an Armored-Biological Structure.
Spires need a Lair for them to be created. The cost of creating them is quite high. Each requires 200 minerals and 200 gas. Therefore you should have a lot of resources to build them. You can use them to research Flyer attack and Flyer Carapace which improve your air units.
When the Hive has been morphed, you can upgrade the Spire to a Greater Spire. The Greater Spire is a Zerg Tech building. It allows one to create Brood Lords from Corruptors. The Brood Lords are a force to be reckoned with, especially in air to ground warfare. This unit is very effective since it produces Broodlings as it attacks. The Broodlings in turn attack themselves after they hit their target. These sacrificial Broodlings assist the ground forces or add some damage to the units that are attacking the Brood Lords. Greater Spires are also Amoured-Biological Structures.
Upgrading to the Greater Spire is not very expensive. You are only required to have 100 minerals and 150 vespene gas. Just like the Spires they are used to carry out Flyer Attack and Flyer Carapace research.
The issue with using this building is that the cost of Brood Lords is very high. You have to be sure you really need them before upgrading your Spires. This is because producing many Brood Lords can take a toll on your economy. Therefore, you must have a good plan on how to use them.
Using the correct build order will enable you to use the building properly. You could build a Spire quickly and upgrade them later in the game so that you can start using the Brood Lords for example. The Greater Spire is stronger then the regular Spire and so it has more hit points.
With the correct late-game strategy, you can conquer the battlefield and consistently emerge victorious in your matches. However, you have to be careful lest you use up all your resources on Brood Lords and render yourself defenseless on the ground.
