Bloodborne Character Creation Guide – Origin, Starting Weapon, Blood Echoes

Bloodborne is a tough game with a somewhat confusing character creation system. In order to help you understand how to make the best character and stay ahead of the terrifying creatures in Yharnam, we created this guide to help you get started.

Wondering if Bloodborne has what it takes to stand up to previous Dark Souls adventures? Read our in-depth review. If your character has already been created and you're looking to jump into the action, check out our incredible Bloodborne walkthrough, including tips and full guides to all of the game's boss fights.

Understanding Your Origin

The most important part of creating a character in Bloodborne involves choosing the correct origin. Unlike other RPGs where this simply changes a few lines within your biography, Bloodborne bases all of your statistics upon the choice you make. There are nine origins featured within Bloodborne, and each one gives players a distinct variation of different attributes and stats.

Origin choice begins at a base level of 10 unless you choose the Waste of Skin Origin. The other statistics, Vitality, Endurance, Strength, Skill, Bloodtinge, and Arcane vary depending on your choice. Below you will find a break down of each origin, as well as the stats and attributes of each one.

Understanding Attributes

Vitality represents your character’s health. This will dictate how many hits he or she can take before perishing and returning to Hunter’s Dream.

Endurance is your character’s stamina. It dictates how many rolls, attacks, and other actions you complete before needing to recover.

Strength dictates your character’s, well, strength. Having a lower number in this attribute will limit the amount of stronger-powered weapons your character can utilize.

Skill is similar to your character’s speed and is the opposite of strength.

Many times, players will focus on one of these two attributes in order to have a well-balanced character. We suggest achieving a balance between both of these attributes, since it will allow you to make use of all the weapons at your disposal in Bloodborne.

Bloodtinge and Arcane deal more with the magical side of things, and effect weapons more than anything. They aren’t important unless you plan on using more magical based weapons.

If you aren’t aware, your Origin affects the amount of Blood Echoes that you start with. This should be an important part of any choice you make going forward from here, since these items act as the game’s currency.

Choosing Your Origin

Choosing your Origin is the most important part of the character creation in this game.

Milquetoast is the middle-road for character creation. It allows you to be a jack-of-all-trades, which is useful for newer players to Dark Souls style games.

Lone Survivor is probably the best Origin to choose as a newcomer because of the high Vitality rating.

If you aren’t new to this style of game and feel confident in your skills, Origins like Military Veteran, Violent Past, or Professional will represent the best starting points because of the high ratings featured within their attribute list.

We only suggest playing as a Noble or Waste of Skin Origin if you are exceptionally confident in your skills, and have hours of experience with previous From Software titles.

Overall, your best choices for creating a fluid and well-balanced character from the start are the Violent Past, Milquetoast, Lone Survivor, and Military Veteran classes.

Choosing a Weapon

Once you start Bloodborne and make it past your first fight, you’ll view a nice cut scene and head to Hunter’s Dream. From here, you can accept your first primary and secondary weapons. Currently there are three starter weapons for the primary slot, and two for the secondary.

Saw Cleaver

The best all-around option for the primary weapon slot is the Saw Cleaver. It features average attack and speed, and is able to inflict just enough damage to your enemies to keep them on their toes.

  • Physical ATK: 90
  • Durability: 200
  • Attribute Bonus:
    • Strength: D
    • Skill: E
    • Arcane: D

Hunter Axe

This weapon is the most powerful starter option, however it is also the slowest. Unlike the Threaded Cane and the Saw Cleaver, this weapon's long-form doesn't allow the player to use a firearm with it.

  • Physical ATK: 98
  • Durability: 200
  • Attribute Bonus:
    • Strength: D
    • Skill: E
    • Arcane: D

Threaded Cane

The fastest starter weapon, this stylish cane converts to a whip when changed to its long-form option. It's the weakest of the three starter weapons, but the attack speed allows you to inflict damage on enemies quick enough that it doesn't make much of a difference.

  • Physical ATK: 78
  • Durability: 200
  • Attribute Bonus:
    • Strength: E
    • Skill: C
    • Arcane: D

Hunter Pistol

The first starter secondary weapon is the most powerful of the two starter firearms. It's also the most precise, requiring players to take aim and wait for the perfect shot to hit their target.

  • Blood ATK: 70
  • Durability: 100
  • Attribute Bonus:
    • Bloodtinge: D

Hunter Blunderbuss

Although is isn't the greatest at range, the Hunter Blunderbuss is extremely powerful up close, and has an incredible spread, which makes it exceptionally easy to land hits with.

  • Blood ATK: 20
  • Durability: 150
  • Attribute Bonus:
    • Bloodtinge: D

It’s important to keep all of the information presented above in mind when selecting your Origin and starting weapons. It should also be noted that you can purchase the other starter weapons, as well as different weapons throughout the game from the Messengers in the fountain below the workshop in Hunter’s Dream using Blood Echoes.
