Skyrim Skills and Perks Guide: Alteration

The School of Alteration involves the manipulation of the physical world and its natural properties. This skill makes it easier to cast spells like Waterbreathing, magical protection, and Paralysis

Good for any mage or character that wants to add some utility tools to his repertoire such as Candlelight, waterbreathing and detect life, as well as defensive spells such as Oakflesh.

Level up your Alteration skill by using Alteration spells effectively.

TRAINERS

Journeyman Trainer: Melaran (Solitude)
Expert Trainer: Dravynea (Kynesgrove)
Master Trainer: Tolfdir (College of Winterhold)

SPELLS

Novice:
Candlelight: Creates a hovering light that lasts for 60 seconds
Equilibrium: Convert 25 points of health into Magicka per second. Caster can be killed by this effect.
Oakflesh: Improves the caster's armor rating by 40 points for 60 seconds

Apprentice:
Magelight:  Ball of light that lasts 60 seconds and sticks where it strikes
Stoneflesh: Improves the caster's armor rating by 60 points for 60 seconds

Adept:
Detect Life: Nearby living creatures, but not undead, machines or daedra, can be seen through walls.
Ironflesh: Improves the caster's armor rating by 80 points for 60 seconds
Telekinesis: Can pull an object to you from a distance. Add it to your inventory or throw it.
Waterbreathing: Can breathe water for 60 seconds

Expert:
Detect Dead: Nearby dead can be seen through walls
Ebonyflesh: Improves the caster's armor rating by 100 points for 60 seconds
Paralyze: Targets that fail to resist are paralyzed for 10 seconds

Master:
Dragonhide: Caster ignores 80% of all physical damage for 30 seconds
Mass Paralysis: All targets in the area that fail to resist are paralyzed for 15 seconds.

PERKS

Novice Alteration
Cast Novice level alteration spells for half Magicka

Apprentice Alteration
Cast Apprentice level Alteration spells for Half Magicka
Requires: Novice Alteration, Alteration 25

Adept Ateration
Cast Adept level Alteration spells for Half Magicka
Requires: Apprentice Alteration, Alteration 50

Expert Alteration
Cast Expert level Alteration spells for half Magicka
Requires: Adept Alteration, Alteration 75

Master Alteration
Cast Master level Alteration spells for half Magicka
Requires: Expert Alteration, Alteration 100

Note: If you are planning on using Alteration frequently, then you should get all the above perks as otherwise you will not be able to manage your Magicka.

Alteration Dual Casting
Dual casting an Alteration spell overcharges the effects into an even more powerful version,
Requires: Novice Alteration, Alteration 20

To dual cast an Alteration spell, equip both spells in same hand. The duration of most spells will be increased.

Mage Armor (1/2/3)
Protection spells like Stoneflesh are twice/2.5/three times as strong if not wearing armor
Requires: Apprentice Alteration, Alteration 30/50/70

Note: Only take this if your character is not wearing armor (Robes are not armor) and relying on the flesh spells for defense.

Magic Resistance (1/2/3)
Blocks 10%/20%/30% of a  spell's effect
Requires: Apprentice Alteration, Alteration 30/50/70

Note: This can be useful for any character not just mages.

Stability
Alteration spells have greater duration
Requires: Adept Alteration, Alteration 70

Note: Stacks with Dual Casting

Atronach
Absorb 30% of the Magicka of any spells that hit you
Requires: Expert Alteration, Alteration 100
