Max Payne 3 Walkthrough Part 9: Alive If Not Exactly Well

With your first flashback to New Jersey under your belt, you and Max will snap back to reality in Sao Paulo. Passos will have been driving you around in his speedboat for quite some time now, and you will be quickly approaching the enemy stronghold ahead. As you approach, Passos will explain the lay of the land and which forces he thinks are at work in this scheme. You will have naturally gotten tangled up in some pretty nasty stuff, with gangsters, paramilitary, and city police forces all involved in the winding web of the plot. When you reach the gangster stronghold, Max will climb out of the boat and wade to shore. Your next mission has now officially begun.

You will begin in the damp docks of the camp. Head up the incline ahead and turn to the left to find a small wall. Climb over the chest-high wall and run to the left through the abandoned bodies of the ships. Shoot the lock off of the door to the left and head through. Climb the stairs ahead to reach the upper platform and climb over the red wall. Head across the courtyard here and proceed through the white door directly across from you. Max will enter cover and see a boat float by with the gangster's boss, Saranno. Two guys in a pickup truck will be loading cargo at the dock. Max will express his desire to get by them with little trouble, but that's not really feasible. You can try to sprint across to take cover behind the dumpster, but most times the enemies will see you. It's easiest to pop out in Bullet Time and shoot them. Then, look to the right to find enemies running through the gate. Shoot the three of them when they run out and proceed in to the building from which they came.

You will find a television streaming video of the captors tormenting Fabaina in a warehouse somewhere in the compound. Two gangsters will enter the room outside, and they will quickly see you if you don't decide to get the jump on them. Pop out and shoot them through the window. More enemies will quickly follow. Pop out from your cover point and look behind the crates and various wooden stacked planks to find the rest of the enemies, and shoot them all to clear the area ahead. Run through the open doorway at the opposite end of the warehouse and approach the metal gate to have Max open it automatically. Be ready to enter Bullet Time. Pop the power as soon as the grate is open, as three enemies will be waiting in the cargo container directly ahead for you. Pop the power and go for headshots.

Take cover on the cargo container to the right and pop around to shoot the next two thugs. One of them will be on top of one of the cargo containers, so watch out for that one especially. Run around it, to the left of the truck, and dive out from behind the truck to shoot the next to enemies to the right. When they are dead, quickly take cover behind the lip of the red cargo container and shoot the enemy at the end of the corridor ahead. When he is dead, pop out and make a U around the corner to find another enemy, Kill him just as quickly and take cover on the solid part of the fence. A large group of enemies will wait for you around the other side of the chain link part of the fence. If you are patient, you can wait for some of the enemies to come at you. When the enemy clears the corner of the chain link fence, pop out of your position and fire while backpedaling. You can easily take out at least one of the enemies in this way. When you are ready, you can pop out and shoot the rest through the holes in the chain link fence.

Run through the open courtyard where the enemies were, and proceed through the wooden door towards the white door with all of the bullet holes in it. Entering this room will trigger a short cutscene. It looks like you will have just missed Fabiana and her captors. Examine the handheld camera to find a clue, and search the objects to the left to find a second clue amongst the clutter on the table. Leave the room after this and head up the stairs. Another cutscene will trigger in which Max will climb over some equipment and see a large group of enemies carting Fabiana away. Max will let them take Fabiana, afraid to start shooting until she is clear of the area. When you regain control, pop out of cover and start shooting. The enemies will quickly dislodge the support holding your platform up, and Max will dive off to the right in Bullet Time in hopes of escaping. As usual in these instances, go for headshots and, if you are using a form of lock-on for your control scheme, use it liberally here to snap to new targets. It is actually possible to kill all of the enemies in this area in that short dive. If you can't manage that, try to get at least half of them and steadily advance upon the remaining enemies via the cover to the right side of the room.

Restock on ammo from all of the fallen enemies and head up to the little shack. Examine the picture on the table to find another clue, and then turn to the right and hit the blinking switch between the windows to open the shutter to the next section of the level. Run out and take cover behind the haphazardly stacked boxes outside. Two enemies will try to get the jump on you here, one of whom will attack from a doorway to the right of the stack of boxes you're behind, and another who will attack from the front. Take them both out and proceed through the doorway that the first enemy was hiding in. You will find more enemies in here, so it's best to find cover quickly. Pop out and shoot as many of the enemies as you can from the safety of cover, but watch out for enemies tossing grenades in this area. They will attempt to flush you out of cover using the explosives, but you can actually foil this plan by activating Bullet Time and shooting the explosive from out of the air. Doing this will also bring you one step closer to landing an Achievement/Trophy.

When the first wave of enemies is done with, watch out for another enemy who will rush you from the left. Head into the shack to the right to find Painkillers and examine the blueprints on the table to find a clue, the blueprints of the nightclub from earlier. Head into the abandoned shipping crate directly behind this shack to find a piece of a golden gun, and then run back into the earlier room and up the gangway, through the chain link door ahead. Dive off of the platform when it ends, as an enemy will rush out as you fall. Shoot him and land behind the window, climbing up into cover when you recover from the fall. Again, the enemies will start throwing grenades at you, so you might need to transition from one side of the doorway to the other. Try to shoot them down whenever possible. Just don't leave the relative safety of the doorway, as it will provide the best cover. You can also try to hit the fuel tank to the right, which will cause an explosion that, if timed carefully, will take out some of the enemies. No matter how you decide to do it, take out the enemies standing on the shipping containers ahead, and rush out to take cover behind the green shipping container in the mud.

Two enemies will come rushing at you from the right side of the shipping container. Activate Bullet Time quickly so that they can't get the jump on you, and pop around the side of your cover to eliminate them. If you're lacking in Bullet Time, it will actually be better to stay in the doorway after the next enemy wave triggers, as you won't have to deal with them up close. After they are both dead turn the corner and shoot the enemy behind the crate ahead. When he falls, turn immediately to the left to find an enemy hiding behind the shipping crate that you were using as cover easlier. Head down to the docks and approach the tin barrier to have Max open it up by himself. Run across the small courtyard into the guard shack and pull the lever to lower the bridge to the other side. Max will see Fabiana, but her captors will spirit her away on a boat as a small army of gangsters rushes out to greet you.

Run across the narrow bridge to reach the other side of the docks as fast as you can. Duck behind the small rectangular piece of cover facing the boat and look to your left to easily shoot the approaching enemies as they rush down the docks at you. Watch out for the boat, which will sail away to the left while firing at you. Take out the gunner on the boat if you can, but don't even bother with the rest of the boat's inhabitants. Take cover on the crate ahead and look to your left. You will be exposed from your left flank, and enemies will try to flank around you and shoot you from the other side of the docks here. Activate Bullet Time and shoot them first, and then aim ahead to kill the rest of the enemies down the walkway from you.

Follow the docks to get onto the white boat. Walk into the cockpit of the boat to find Painkillers. More enemies will attack as you do so. Take cover behind the control panel of the boat and pop around to shoot the two enemies before leaving the boat and taking cover by the white crate. Another boat will pass on your right. Activate Bullet Time and shoot the driver, the gunner, and the passenger to effectively render the boat useless, and make it explode for some reason to boot. Pop around the corner and sprint down the walkway ahead, using Bullet Time as necessary to pick off any remaining enemies on the boat ahead. When you reach the next walkway across, head to the left first and take out the enemy by the guard shack. Enter the guard shack to find a medicine cabinet on the wall with more Painkillers. Take cover on the corner of the guard shack and wait for the enemies ahead to pop their heads out for easy kills from this vantage point. When you are ready, head across the metal walkway and take cover on the white crate to the right of the signs.

More enemies will rush you from the walkway to the right. Aim over your cover and pick each of them off, as they will only come one at a time. Don't worry if one of the signs next to you blocks your view, as Max's bullets will travel straight through the sign and hit the enemies as they approach. Don't leave cover until all of the enemies are dead, as they can easily get the jump on you if you leave your cover. Rush down the walkway to finally reach your objective ahead. Unfortunately, you will be too late to save Fabiana. As the enemies escape, they will set the pier alight. Max will leap off of it and into the water. This, of course, triggers Passos to show up, just in time to not really help with anything. As Max fills him in, Passos will take off in the boat.

You will be equipped with a light machine gun in this next section, and you will have to fend off the approaching enemy boats. You don't have to worry about ammo in this section, you just have to worry about overheating so feel free to unload with everything you've got as long as you let the trigger breathe every once in a while. The first two boats will come from behind and will be easily destroyed. The next boat will swing around to the right before accidentally hurtling itself against a building. The boats ahead will then begin to toss molotov cocktails at your boat. Enter Bullet Time when they toss a molotov to shoot it out of the air just like a grenade. Shoot the enemy boat to the right, and then the enemies lining the wooden bridge above and ahead. After this, you will begin to ride through a small village. The boat will be temporarily disabled by a grenade, so it'll be up to you to defend the boat while Passos repairs it.

Look to the left to find the first group of enemies. Keep shooting them until one tosses a grenade. Shoot it out of the sky, and then look to the right. More enemies will fire at you. There will be explosives on the shore that can take them out in quick succession. Look for the little yellow barrels to trigger the explosions. The next building can easily be deestroyed with explosives as well. SImply shoot the balcony repeatedly to blow it. An enemy will approach in a pickup truck just as Passos finishes fixing the boat. Lock on to the trucks and shoot the drivers if at all possible, but look out for the gunners in the back as well. When you are finished with this section, an enemy boat will go hurtling into a support column ahead and send a bridge toppling down.

As Passos makes his way around the collapsed bridge ahead, turn around and shoot the enemies approaching from behind you. Look to your left, through the thistle of trees and shrubs, to find another boat approaching quickly. Take it out through the breaks in the trees and Passos will speed up, arcing around the curve in the river ahead and getting back up on the boats. Max will spot Fabiana and Passos will bring them to the side of the boat. As the enemy boat forces Passos to swerve off to the left, enter Bullet Time and shoot the enemies off of the boat directly across from you through the holes in the fence. Just as it seems like you have the advantage, Passos will hit the pier and send the boat flying through the air. The game will enter Bullet Time, giving you an opportunity to shoot the enemies on the boat. It sounds dumb, but be careful not to shoot Fabiana in this section. She can be kind of hard to make out amongst the chaos, and you'll obviously get a game over if you send a bullet through your ward's face.

Unfortunately, when you land, the boat will stall out again and Fabiana will slip through your grasp yet again. Max and Passos will have no choice but to head back to Sao Paulo proper and contemplate their next move.
