There have been much arguement on if neverwinter nights, claiming it was a DnD computer platform, was true and backed or was complete fail. Well, its generally considered fail, by those who alerady been fantasy roleplaying because, its a computer game for christs sake, whatever you do you cant be as flexible as it needs on a DnD is what they say, and is true, but why should they try to be THAT flexible anyway?
Yes of course, it is the aim of fantasy role playing, as dungeons and dragons is a scale of it, to keep its scope the largest and widest but isn't it still quite an effort to try to get that on computer, and make maybe thousands and millions of people that isn't aware of fantasy role playing, become so? This thesis can be the only one that could break through 'that is why frp shouldn't be adapted on computer games' and it really has great chance to break through it. Well lets think, what harm does it cause to try to establish a computer game for dungeons and dragons? There may be that stupid children playing it and claiming they do know dungeons and dragons yes, but there might be many other reasonable adults or teenagers that learn the frp game this way, as instance, a 17 year old boy, buying it and after trying it, wonders where the hell all these explanations, these stories, the map and all of it come from. Starts asking around if people know it and there he encounters the fantasy roleplaying members of the community which take him directly into the business. Otherwise it would be quite a pain to try and recruit more people for the frp cause. And also that i do not agree with those who say that fantasy roleplaying needn't new members and is enough as what they alerady have. How can one be so sure? I mean, who knows what great mins are out there? Who knows what every people, any people, some people can add intense imagination , brilliant and splendid creativity maybe is to be talked for half a millenia? I'd say that every man must be given a chance to show what he is about. If adapting dungeons and dragons onto computer games is the way, it should be so. Apart from that, this can also be seen, as we looked to it this way all the time, as an advertisment for dungeons and dragons. But what about thinking of it as a new story that can be roleplayed on? Maybe many fantasy roleplayers got interesting ideas from the game, since i am positive that it has quite cool a story. It is about a sword whose shards are held together to form it by just will of a man who will save the realm and is encountered thousands of strange adventures. First he finds his village attacked just because there were one of the silver shards there. Then he makes his way to a nearby city where he hopes he can gather information about the shards. However, the city is in struggle. A serial killer is on loose and killing the noblemen. For these he finds ways to reach the man he is after, and when he does, he is sent to an odd place, somewhere that the guy claims to be a haven of an old court wizard.
Turns out to be the haven of some powerful warlock who tried fighting one common enemy. The king of shadows. After that when they start to journey together, it turns out that this king of shadows isn't evil at all but a mindless beast. Eventually they are forced to kill him,and the place collapses, all things come to end as the game does. Think of it, isn't it with even the simpliest layouts a cool story? I mean, i know it is in some ways a clichèe but nothing's a clichèe when you are so into it.
