In August of 2013, I discovered that IGN was giving out free codes for the iPad version of Kingdom Rush as their free game of the month, intrigued and pulled in by my love of tower defense games, I quickly went ahead and downloaded the game, before long I was totally engrossed in the world that was Kingdom Rush. I was pleasantly surprised to find that that the December 2014 IGN free game of the month was the second addition to the Kingdom Rush series; Kingdom Rush: Frontiers. I scooped up the game straight away and began playing it as soon as it had finished downloading.
Kingdom Rush Frontiers is a fun tower defense type game that was developed by Ironhide Game Studio and published by Armor games. This game is the second in a series of three games so far.
If you are a fan of the first game and have played it quite a bit, you won’t have to worry about not knowing what to do, heck; you can even skip the tutorial. Frontiers still uses the same kind of tower defense gameplay, presentation and even art style. The four initial tower types are still the same as in the first game so there’s nothing to be confused by with that. The scoring method at the end of each level is still the same; you can still make up to three stars with each level which can then be used to allocate upgrades to certain towers.
Where the differences do occur are in the depths of its gameplay; first of all, the more advanced upgrades for the basic tower types have been totally amped up and are a lot cooler than they were previously. Your mage towers can now follow the upgrade path to where they will become Necromancer towers which work purely in your favor; any enemies that you take out can be brought back from the dead by these towers, these zombies will then do your bidding and kill their former comrades. Another really cool upgrade occurs along the Archer upgrade path; the Axethrowers allow you to curse your enemies which will allow members on your side of the fight to inflict more damage on any enemies and even get rid of any aura that they may hold.
Enemies now have a lot more effects on the fight besides the general damage that they will do to your guys. Any shamans that appear on the field are able to bestow defending auras on any surrounding servants so it’s like they have a living shield protecting them, something which makes it even harder to kill them off, nobody wants to attack the guy with the shield that can attack them right back. Other interesting enemies include the Queen Bees that have a tendency to have a swarm of little bees burst out of them upon the moment of their deaths or even the Alien Facehuggers that have the ability to transform your fighters into freaky alien creatures if you can’t defeat them within a specific amount of time. Because of these new features, you really have to think about way more than just your simple tower arrangement; you have to create specific strategies for these types of scenarios.
Even the battlefields have gotten a whole lot more interesting as your enemies can occasionally just completely steer off course and create a whole brand new path to follow which can really throw a spanner into the works of your defense layout. If you get to the harder levels and expect to not pay attention to what’s going on because your layout is OP, think again, because in the later levels you’ll come across battlefields with man-eating plants that will take out your fighters if you aren’t paying attention to them. The players that do pay attention to their surroundings will find that they are rewarded whereas, those who don’t will end up being punished.

Kingdom Rush: Frontiers is beautifully well made, compelling tower defense game, it masquerades as a casual game that you can let yourself fit in a couple battle here and there with, but in reality, it is a game where the player must strategically fight difficult battle where you just don’t know if you’re going to win or lose. Because of this fact, it’s a game that is incredibly difficult to totally conquer. this is one of those games where perfectionism is a must for the player because a perfect score means that you will get all three stars.
To get those three stars, I have lots of tips for those who want to completely dominate this game.
First of all, when it comes to tower placement, a balance in needed. Because you don’t really know what is coming at you in the battlefield, you need to prepare a great front line which allows you to wipe out as many of the enemies as you can before they get much further. because the enemies that come at you are somewhat random, you need to create a balance of different towers that will address all of the enemy types. You will need to have a mixture of both magical and physical fighting attacks to ensure that you are protected well.
In my opinion, the best tower type is the archers, they are both powerful and flexible and provide you with a fairly wide range of defense. They are incredibly cheap and effective against quite a lot of the enemies that enter the fray and they are also straight up badass once you start to upgrade them.
When it comes to leveling up your towers, there is no wrong way to go about it, whichever tower you find yourself relying on mist should be prioritized above other tower types, however you should still keep the others in consideration as again, you need to keep a decent balance. After your archer towers, you should focus on your mage towers as this tower does have some incredibly powerful attacks as you upgrade further.
Each level is different though, so it’s good to change up your strategy once in a while to see what works for different situations. Don’t forget that you can reset your tower upgrade choices if the strategy you’re going with isn’t working all that well for you, if you find you are incredibly stuck on a level, try switching your points around to see if that will help.
If you have a pretty good defense set up all over your battlefield, call waves of enemies early as you’ll get a bonus for doing so. This is an especially great tactic for earlier levels when there isn’t a whole lot of challenge.
In each level, you should create specific kill zone points throughout the battlefield, this will allow you to temporarily hold up the enemy and stop them from going any further, whilst simultaneously attacking them with nearby in range towers, thus taking out the stationary opponent even quicker.
If you find that you are getting pretty overwhelmed a good option is to upgrade your barracks in the middle of the fight, any soldiers on the field with low health will come back both stronger and with full health.
Take into account that you do have reinforcements, whilst they aren’t terribly strong; they are useful for holding up any enemies for a short time. They are also great if any enemies end up breaking through your final line of defense, since they can just be dropped anywhere on the battlefield. Their recharge rate is fairly fast, so when in doubt, drop some reinforcements in there because they can only help you out.
If you see any Parasytes enter the fray, whatever you do, don’t let them get anywhere near your soldiers, because if not defeated quickly, they’ll end up infecting your soldiers who will turn on you. Take them out and take them out fast.
When I learn about sequels of games I really enjoyed, my initial reaction is to get very excited, then the feeling of dread comes over me and I start to wonder whether it will be an improvement on the first game, or whether it will be a total failure. I feel like sequels should build on what the previous game started with, essentially I want an entirely new game, that still has the same foundation of what the game was all about when it first started.
What I love about Kingdom Rush: frontiers is the fact that whilst it still feature a whole lot of the first game, it adds just the right amount of new content for it to feel like an entirely new game rather than a rehash of the original, making it just another great gaming experience.
Because you’re only able to unlock a few heroes through gameplay, you’re limited by how powerful your hero can be unless you want to blow ninety none cent to $5.99 on a new hero. While the other heroes aren’t necessary to work through the game, it is still disappointing to know that all of the really cool heroes are there but you can’t have them unless you’re willing to pay.
Artwork: I give Kingdom Rush Frontiers a 9/10 for its artwork. The artwork has a pretty cool cartoonish feel to it that really adds to the ambience of the game. It definitely add something to the game and makes it that much more enjoyable. It is visually appealing and I actually really like the style.
Music and SFX: I give the game an 8/10 for its music and SFX. The soundtrack to this great is just awesome; it makes the gaming experience that much more. The sound effects are a little lax but fit in well with the game type.
Story and Originality: I give the game a 7/10 for its story and originality. Whilst the game does feature a lot of what was in the original game, it does also add a whole lot more new features that you won’t find in the first game, which is definitely something that makes the game appealing, especially considering how successful the first game was. Whilst there is the initial comic strip at the very start of the game, you’re still kind of lost when it come to the store of this game, after the storyline is set at the very beginning of the game, there is not mention of anything that could possibly contribute towards a storyline in this game. I suppose it’s good that it’s left up to your imagination, but I feel like it would be a whole lot better if it had that extra something that most tower defense game totally fail to include in their games, I know for a fact that it would definitely make me enjoy it a whole lot more.
General Gameplay: I give Kingdom Rush Frontiers an 8/10 for its general gameplay. It’s easy enough to figure out even if you haven’t played the previous game before, you just place a tower and away you go.
Addictiveness: I give the game a 10/10 for its addictiveness. In every level based game, there comes that one single level that has you wanting to destroy your device, Frontiers is no exception to this rule. I came across multiple levels that I just felt like I was never going to get past. The great thing about this game is that you can just play the level over and over until you pass it; there is no life bar system in place which is great because it really does just allow you to keep on playing, hence the imminent addiction to this game.
Overall, I rate Kingdom Rush Frontiers 8/10.
