Contest of Champions is Marvel’s newest addition to their lineup of epics. In this game, you are working alongside the mysterious Collector to gather a team of the most popular Marvel heroes.
The premise of the game is that you must create an all star team to work your way through numerous battles, ultimately going up against the team of Kang the Conqueror.
To unlock all of the characters and items in Marvel Contest of Champions, you’ll find out that you probably need to spend some real money or save up for a long time to have enough to buy them. Contest of Champions is a very simple fighting, streetfighter-esque game. With fast one on one fights, you get both excitement and heart pounding nervousness.
Based on the 1982 comic of the same name, this game does not betray the original idea, albeit with some changes.
Marvel Contest of Champions is currently running version 0.3.0 and requires your device to be running at least iOS version 7.0 or later. The game is only currently available to play in English, however it has only been soft launched in a few select countries thus far and an official release date has not yet been fully released. For any Danish and Canadian gamers, you are in luck as Canada and Denmark are two of the countries that the game has been soft launched in, the game can be downloaded for free from the app store, with the option to purchase further in app content.
USD prices aren’t quite figured out yet but there are multiple in app purchase options. You can buy five different unit packages containing 135 to 3100 units. There are also special limited time packages that are available for several days, in which you can get a three star hero, units, an energy refill, health potions ISO-8 and battle chips. The units can be used to purchase extra crystals to unlock new heroes and can even be used to upgrade your heroes.
Since Marvel Contest of Champions is a very new game with limited release, no hacks have been developed for the game as of yet, however, requests have been made on popular hacking sites and some progress is being made.
After playing around with the game for a couple days I noticed a few things about it. The combination attacks are very unusual and very different to other fighting style games, in most games combination attacks are typically chained attacks that go uninterrupted, but in Marvel Contest of Champions, combo attacks are actually a whole lot more easy to complete. Even if the enemy attacks you right in the middle of your attack chain and you’re able to successfully block any attacks they make, your meter is sustained and you can fulfill your combo. This is definitely something you’ll want to take advantage of as combo attacks will do the most damage and will lead to the swift end of your fight. You may want to practice blocking attacks if you’re hoping to make this your strategy in all of your fights, but if you aren’t too confident, it’s okay to mix it up too.
When buying new crystals to get new heroes, don’t go for the really expensive ones just because you’re more likely to get a hero with more stars, remember you can upgrade your heroes with ISO-8 rather than spend your precious credits, the more you play the game, the more ISO-8 you’ll end up collecting so you can work on upgrading your favorite go to hero.
To get a good idea of what this game was all about I actually went ahead and downloaded the Danish soft launch version. First of all, I love that this is so different from other newer marvel releases on the app store. The art of the game is incredibly well done and really fits in perfectly with the comic book genre within which it is based; the graphics are fairly realistic with the perfect amount of Marvel cartoon thrown into the mix.
The fighting is very minimal and easy to get a grasp on, I even found myself making sound effects to go along with my complete smack down of Hulk. I love the fact that you can move your character around within the fight, retreating for a couple of seconds really allows you to think about your next move and strategically plan how the fight is going to go. The special attacks that you can unleash are particularly spectacular and a great way to end your fight.
One of the really great things about this app is that is it really doesn’t push it’s in app purchases on you unless it is something you know you’re going to go ahead and buy. Your energy recharges fairly quickly so there is no need to spend your precious credits on refilling once you’ve run out and you also have five different slots for your different characters which makes me feel like I have a nice selection to choose from, even when you’re at the very beginning and you haven’t unlocked all of the slots, you are given two character crystals (your first will be a Spiderman, but your second crystal is random, so you have the chance at coming out with any one star character) which is great because you can work on upgrading both characters whilst leveling up yourself to open up more character slots.There is also a fairly well detailed story to the game which is rare with fighting games these days, especially amongst the mobile gaming platform.
I love the fact that each different hero has a different set of special attacks which make them different from one another. This really makes you feel like you have a range of attacks ready at your disposal, it also lets you know that you’re not just going to be having the same fight over and over again with the same character every time, it really gives you a wider experience within the game and makes me enjoy it even more.
I really don’t like how you get new characters. In Marvel Contest of Champions, you can’t just choose which hero you want, you have to leave it purely to chance. First you have to buy a crystal, which reveals which hero you’ve won when it shatters. I don’t like how the lower tier crystals that you can buy with the generic currency only give you the lower tier heroes who only have one or two stars. I don’t like this because there is no guarantee that you’ll end up with a character you actually want. The idea of a lucky dip option is a good one, but only if there is another type of option where you can just directly pick which character you specifically want.
One of my biggest problems with this game is how slowly it loads and the fact that it doesn’t run very well at all. Whilst trying to battle other characters it was so glitchy and hard to play, I eventually just gave up on even trying. I understand that it’s a very new game which hasn’t even been fully released yet, so I hope this is one of the issues they resolve in the full launch (which is rumored to be some time around mid-late December.), once the kinks have been worked out, I’m pretty sure, I’ll have much more fun playing.
Artwork: I give Marvel Contest of Champions a 9/10 for its artwork. I love that it is the perfect blend of comic book art and realistic cartoon art; it really suits the genre of the game and really contributes to the aesthetic of the game. It’s visually appealing and is definitely a contributing factor towards my wanting to play the game.
Music and SFX: I give the game a 7/10 for its music and sfx. Whilst there isn’t really a whole lot in the way of music, the sound effects are great, especially when you’re in battle. Even if you don’t like the SFX, you can just make up your own (like I did, poof, poof, take that hulk!).
Story and Originality: I give the game an 8/10 for its story and originality. It’s rare to find a great freemium game these days with a truly great storyline, which is something that really makes Contest of Champions stand out amongst other games of its genre. Whilst it isn’t exactly original and I see huge chunks of ideas taken directly from Street Fighter and Mortal Kombat, Marvel really added a lot to the fighting type game and truly made it their own.
General Gameplay: I give the game 7/10 for its general gameplay. One of the very first things I notice when I started playing this game was how fast paced and how quickly this game moved. The fights go really quickly because of the ability to string my combos together. There’s a great deal of variation in your fighting styles so you can really fight at any pace you want, if you’re just starting and aren’t that confident with the game yet, you can just rely on light attacks, whereas once you’ve played for a while, heavy attacks can really speed up your gameplay to the point where it takes less than thirty seconds to beat your opponent.
Addictiveness: I give the game an 8/10 for its addictiveness. I could genuinely see this game becoming one of my go to time killers. It has a lot to offer and I can only see this growing once it has fully launched across the world. I really hope the issues I pointed out can be resolved because I would love to obsessively play this game like it’s the next candy crush only nerdier.
Overall, I rate Marvel Contest of Champions 8/10.
