Since its release, Game of War has been incredibly popular, even gaining a coveted spot in the Top Grossing charts, where it still sits now at number three, it has been reported that the game generates over $710 thousand in daily revenue.
Around 18000 players join the game each day making it more and more immense every moment. The game from Machine Zone took around 18 months in its making and its team now consists upon around 150 people. Released on 25th July 2013, Game of War has proven itself to be a huge success. Despite of being a mobile platform game, it mimics the more sophisticated role playing MMORPGs (Massively multiplayer online role playing game).
Game of War is a global war game connecting people of different regions, cultures, thoughts and languages from all over the world. Unlike other games which connect players based on their region and language, Game of War connects people from all over the world. Loyalty points is a kind of currency which you can earn by doing different Alliance Quests and VIP Quests. The more powerful alliance you have, the more items there will be in the alliance store. You can have all of them by completing different quests.
Whenever someone in the alliance buys gold or slays a monster, you will get a free gift. The quality of gift depends upon the amount of gold bought. If you are in a large alliance, you can get hundreds of gifts each day which will boost your progress. The levels you were going to complete in days, now they are just some hours away.
Alliances are also a great way to enhance your security. Unless you are extremely powerful, you will be attacked by other players and alliances. Not if you also have a powerful alliance. You can build an embassy where troops of other players can reside for your security. In case you get attacked, you will have much larger army than your individual one. You can also attack a other strong players and alliances by summoning armies of your allies in the hall of war. You can then combine your armies and take down much stronger enemies than you were individually going to do. United you stand. Divider, your armies get killed and resources, looted.
Armies and heroes: Now let us talk about the army. Your army consists of various types of soldiers. Some have a strong attack, others have immense defense. Some are accurate, others attack in bulk. It is on you how you make a strong army. Often a good approach is to make place the soldiers with high amount of armor in the front and soldiers who are weak but have strong attack at places where they cannot be hit directly i-e behind other soldiers.
If the battle is taking place on a tile outside the city, all injured soldiers will die as there is no hospital outside the city. Winner gets the tile and loser’s surviving troops go back to their city.
Every army can have heroes in it. You can choose from different heroes at the start of the game. Every hero has his/her own powers. You can also upgrade the heroes to increase them in power. However if you lose a battle, your hero can get captured by the opponent if he has a prison in their city. If your hero gets captured, you will be notified by the bars present over the hero’s portrait. If the player’s level is above 10 but below 15, he cannot execute your hero but only detain it for a limited number of days. After that, your hero will return. If the abductor of your hero has an altar, he may execute your hero after a certain period of time. After that, your hero will be shown in your graveyard from where you can revive them or buy a new hero. If the capturer has the ability to execute your hero but he chooses not to, hero will try to escape and return to you. The higher the level of hero and the lower the level of the prison, the quickly the hero escapes.
While your hero is in detention waiting for their execution day, you can free them by marching to the capturer’s city. You can also set a bounty for your hero. Then different players from all over the world willing to win the bounty will try to free your hero. Bounty is set in silver coins. The player to rescue your hero will get all the silver. The abductor of your hero may also be kind enough to free your hero. Though it will deprive them from the boosts they were going to get out of your hero’s soul.
If you happen to capture someone’s hero, you can detain them if you have a prison. You can also execute them if you have an altar. Executing a hero will give you attack, defense, health and speed boosts. Now you know killing someone can also be beneficial. You already did. Didn’t you?
Buildings: Your city will also need many buildings in order to work properly. Developers are wise enough to understand this. But perhaps it was too hard for them to get that the whole population cannot join the army. But then again, anything is possible in a game, and a movie. You will need buildings to train the troops, heal the wounded, discover new technologies and maintain relationships with other allies. Let us take a look at some of the buildings one by one.
You need an academy to do the research. Research is necessary to advance in the game. As you do the research, you come to know about new troops, traps and hero buffs. As the research progresses, your speed of training the troops increases, you find new traps to engage the enemy with and your overall power is increased as a result. It also boosts the construction and gathering time for you and increases the resources production. In short, academy is damn important to have. Upgrading the academy will decrease the research time and unlock new war strategies for you.
After the enemy’s hero is held captive, it is detained in the prison for a certain period of time and then taken to the altar for execution. While the hero is in prison, your attack and strategic attack powers are increased. Upgrading the prison will increase those powers up to 30%. When the hero is executed, the altar provides 24 hours boost to your attack, defense, health and speed. The powers are cumulative so if you execute 2 heroes, it’s 48 hours and 72 hours for 3 heroes. At level 1, altar provides negligible benefits but as it is upgraded, it can boost the benefits up to 38%. That is huge!
Before you take your troops to battle, you need to train them. Barracks are important for this purpose. Upgrading barracks will increase the number of soldiers which can be trained at once.
The Embassy is a seriously important building (but then again, which building isn’t important?). You will often need reinforcements from your allies in order to defend your city from an intruder. Your embassy is the building where those reinforcement troops reside. Upgrading the embassy will increase the capacity of reinforcements to be held at a time. Starting from 5000, the capacity can be boosted to a whooping million. You tell me, who would try to attack a person with a million troops in reinforcements. I say only a moron will do that.
You can equip your hero with certain materials to increase their power. Where do these materials come from? I am glad you asked. There is a building called forge where you can craft these materials for your beloved hero. You can also combine gems to increase the quality of the materials. Gems can be earned in the casino or by completing quests. Upgrading the Forge will make crafting and combining faster.
Hall of War is used to summon the alliance for attack on a player from another alliance. Only the leader of the alliance can lead the force. All the troops donated to the attack will get the leader’s attributes; his boosts, levels and so on.
In battle, your troops will also get wounded. You will need hospitals to heal them. If the hospital capacity is full, all injured troops which are not admitted to the hospital die. Upgrading the hospital will save more troops and thus generate you a lot of money.

These special power ups and boosts can be used to speed up the server time so you able to fight battles faster and earn money faster, the boosts can boost how powerful your warriors area and how fast your people are able to make money on a regular, non-sped up server. Each of these purchasable items can become highly beneficial to you as long as you know how to use them, so pay attention to their effects, so you’re able to fully take advantage of their effects.
If you plan ranking amongst the highest members in the game, you should be ready to spend some serious cash. In order to make tier four players, you will need a 21 level academy. Before you raise your academy to the 21st level, you will need to have a 21st level prison, altar and hall of war. All of these buildings need special items which can only be bought using gold which can only be bought using real money or received as a gift which is a fancy way of saying someone other than you bit the bullet for you. The last 2 tiers require 3500 and then 4500 special items which cost 10,000 gold for every 1000 items. Even after you have spent this huge amount of money on the game, you will have to wait 50 days before the building is upgraded from level 20 to level 21, or, you know, you can boost the construction using gold. And after you are done with the buildings, be ready to spend 150 million silver and a lot of time in the research of tier four players. If, by chance you survive by now, good luck with making 2 million tier four players you need to survive alone.
Do not start battling from the start of the game. Collect as much resources as you can in the beginning. Send your troops to the areas which have resources. Your troops will load the resources for you and once they come back, they will deposit everything in your bank. Research and train troops as much as you can. Training makes the army significantly stronger. A small number of higher level soldiers can beat a large number of lower level douche army. Before getting into the battle, strengthen yourself as much as you can.
Scout the enemy’s army before you actually attack them. Send some valueless troops to his tile. You will lose but you will have a chance to know enemy’s real strength. Next time, you can make a strategy according to his strength. Better to lose some soldiers than a full-fledged battle right?
All in all, it is a very nice game. It has the best graphics in its category. The mere ides of making alliances with other players and ruling the planet is engaging. Developers have done some amazing work with the translator too! Unlike casual games which only come in mind when you need to kill some time, this strategic war game stays on your mind all day long. You wake up at nights to upgrade a building, check your game progress at work. It is like living two lives and sometimes, you live in the game more than you live in real life.
But as you progress, spending money becomes essential. We are not talking about a small amount of money; we are talking about i-have-to-cut-my-budget-to-buy-this-upgrade money. It is a huge turn off for me and many other players. We are already giving our time and attention to you; you must find a way to make use of it. Small in-app purchases also do not hurt but what Machine Zone is doing is unacceptable.
Other complaints that many people have reported is the fact that there is such bad server lag and lousy customer support. Servers can go offline and you can get your whole kingdom wiped out without a trace and good luck with telling this to the customer support representative. You spend $99 on an in-app purchase which you never get and every time you contact customer support, you are issued the same ticket. This dream of ruling the world can cost you a lot of money and time. And Machine Zone! You could really do better than this.
Artwork: I give Game of war a 7/10 for its artwork. The graphics in this game are incredibly well done for a mobile game, a platform which usually takes a massive hit to the graphics potential. The screen doe feel rather quite cluttered, which may be normal for these types of games, however, it is seriously distracting and makes it harder to focus on the task at hand.
Music and SFX: I give the game an 8/10 for its music and SFX. I actually quite enjoyed the music in this game, it was appropriate for the style of game and fit in really well with the action. The sound effects were definitely a big bonus for me as it really bothers me a a game that has so much detail in it totally forgo the sound effects, so this game gets a big thumbs up for their use of semi realistic sound effects.
General Gameplay: I give the game a 5/10 for its general gameplay. The game itself is nice but oriented towards the whole pay to win strategy. Customer support is not good enough in case you get into trouble. Servers can be severely lagged a lot of the time you spend in game, making it really hard to play and enjoy the game. It can be incredibly confusing to understand at times, it took me a while to really figure out what I had to do as the instructions on how to play the game weren’t all that clear.
Story and Originality: I give the game a 4/10 for its story and originality. To me, this is just a generic real time fighting game; there isn’t a whole lot to set it apart from the crowd, which really makes me wonder why it is so popular. Real time role playing strategy games have been around for years. Nothing in this game is new. There isn’t even really much to the story of this game, which makes playing it, that little bit less fulfilling.
Addictiveness: I give the game an 8/10 for its addictiveness. The game is very addictive. The fact that you can communicate with other people irrespective of the language difference and get to know their culture only adds to the otherwise very addictive community game. Regardless of problems with the game, as long as you’re actually able to pay without experiencing the lag, things can get very fun and enjoyable.
Overall, I give Game of War a 6/10.
