The concept of the endless runner is one that has been done, well, endlessly; Alto’s Adventure is another one of these games. In Alto’s Adventure, you’ll travel down a mountain on your snowboard, you’ll do insane jumps, do everything you can to avoid some pesky obstacles and collecting some coins for your effort.
The idea of the endless runner in the snow has been done pretty well in previous games such as Ski Safari, whether or not Alto stacks up against this classic is another question though. Alto’s Adventure definitely has its differences with its beautiful graphic design and immersive gameplay.
The player goes through the game by tapping to jump over obstacles, performing crazy awesome tricks and grinding. As you make your way down the mountain, you’ll come across various power ups and coins that you can use to unlock special permanent boosts. The game in itself is not overly fancy and doesn’t have a ton of extra features that it doesn’t need, it is simple and uses what it does have perfectly, this in turn leave the game feeling not like a bundle of nerves and stress, but instead you actually enjoy a sort of peace playing this game.
Alto’s Adventure is currently running version 1.0.0, which means that this is the very first version added to the app store, so if you do happen to come across any bugs in the game, don’t worry about it and just report what you’ve seen via Facebook, Twitter or by email, developers will appreciate this as they are always working on bug fixes. The game requires your device to be running as least iOS version 7.0 or later, so unfortunately, you won’t be able to run the game on older devices. Currently, Alto’s Adventure is only available to play in English, however, as attention for the game grows worldwide, I have no doubts that in game support for other languages will be added, luckily, there isn’t a whole lot of text within the game, so understanding how to play the game is fairly easy, so if you are still wanting to check out the game but you don’t understand English, you can still check out the game. The app is available to purchase from the app store for the low price of $1.99. The game holds an amazing four and a half star rating and has received glowing reviews from both critics and casual gamers alike.
Usually, I would talk about in app purchases you can buy here, but lo and behold, this game doesn’t actually have any in app purchases for you to buy! I actually found this to be a really refreshing change considering the amount of stuff that is pushed onto us every day from apps we use on a daily basis. There is still a currency system within the game where you collect the coins that are scattered along the mountainside; these coins can be used to upgrade your guys special abilities and such. I’m actually really impressed with the reasoning of the developers in their decision on in app purchases, creator Ryan Cash and co-creator Jordan Rosenberg actually considered making the game a free game with in app purchases, but they felt like this took away from the authenticity of gaming. They wanted to take the game back to its gaming roots where you would just buy a game and playing it without being pestered to buy extra content or currency, which would ultimately shrink your experience of really playing the game. Staying true to what gaming really is is incredibly admirable although cutting out the money making potential is a very risky move for them; luckily, the game has been incredibly popular and had landed itself in a primo top ten spot of the top paid apps on the app store.
From my extensive internet search, there appear to be a variety of working hacks posted on reputable hacking sites for this game, these hacks promise unlimited coins and the ability to buy and upgrade everything at once. Personally, I feel that hacking this game would be doing a disservice to it, but each to their own. If you’re the kind of person that wants to play this game hack free, take a look at my tips and tricks and you’ll be shredding powder and catching llamas in no time.
First of all, the best thing to do in the game is to keep your focus on your goals, on each level you run through, you’ll notice that you have three goals to fulfill in order to move on to the next level, some goals must be completed in a single run whilst other can be completed over a span of multiple runs. Whilst it may seem easier to just focus on a single goal, I would advise trying to focus on two goals at a time, especially if they are ones you can easily complete in one run. You should avoid aiming to fulfill coin goals and special move goals together as sometimes, fulfilling the special moves will force you to miss great deals of coins. Goals that you should try to complete together are grinding, llama collecting, scaring birds, forest travel, coin collecting and rainstorm goals as these are fairly easy to complete together. You can also try to complete points goals and backflip goals together, but you have to be careful if you’re trying to do complete these together as you have to make sure that you are able to hit your point goal before crashing after a failed backflip.
When you begin your run, you’ll notice that you can see your current goals at the very beginning, if you become unsure of what your goals are, you can always pause the game for a second and your goals will be shown on the pause menu. Once you have achieved any one of your goals, a message will flash on your screen telling you that you’ve completed a goal.
If you’re worried that you aren’t really going fast enough and your run is going by pretty slowly, to gain speed, try pulling off a few special moves as these will increase your speed. So if you know that there is a canyon or cliff coming up, you may want to increase your speed a little in order to travel through the air further, this way, you’re more likely to make it across safely and not die.
As you play more of the game and are able to travel further, you’ll notice that you’ll start to get accosted by elders, the important thing when it comes to these guys I to outrun them at all costs because if they end up getting too close to you, you’ll get hit and knocked off your board and have to start all over again. To get ahead of them, like I said before, use your tricks and grind to speed up, although if you’re not at a point where either of these options are doable, merely jumping a little should help you out. Eventually, you’ll reach a ravine or cliff, successfully clearing this will allow you to lose the ender for good, but remember, there will be more, the further you travel.
When earning coins, the biggest favor you can do yourself is to save them up until you can afford a wingsuit which costs seven thousand five hundred coins. If you get really into the game, this should be pretty easily done for you and you’ll have that wingsuit after about two days’ worth of play time. You will definitely need the wingsuit by the time you’re on level thirty one as these have wingsuit related goals, so make sure you have one by then. When you’ve hit the seven thousand five hundred coin mark, go on over to the workshop and buy it.
Any time that you do have a coin collecting goal, the best thing you can do it to use a coin magnet to attract as many coins as you possibly can without actually trying to get them, whilst doing these goals, you should avoid doing any grinding if you can do.
Unless you’re flying over a cliff or ravine, you’ll find that the majority of the available power ups will be placed at snow level or in midair where you have to pull of some nifty stunt. I f you do find yourself needing a power up, look out specifically in these areas.
Once you’ve purchased the wingsuit, you will need to actually charge it up first before you are able to make use of it. To charge up your wingsuit you’ll need to ensure that you are landing plenty of trick and special moves, these will allow your scarf to grow, once your scarf is long enough and glowing white, you’ll see a wingsuit button pop up, activate the wingsuit and you’ll be able to fly. If you do what you would usually do when pulling off a backflip, you’ll notice that you’ll end up loop de looping in the air, which is a seriously really awesome thing to see, if you fly to a grinding area after pulling off the loop de loop, you’ll chain the two tricks together and end up making way more points.
Another really important thing that you need to keep in mind when playing this game is that you need to concentrate on timing your jumps perfectly and managing your speed rates. You’ll eventually come across a pretty wide ravine that you find you’re never quite able to clear, if you can clear it then awesome, but if not, it’s time that you learned how to jump. Before your jump, work on building up your speed with tricks and special moves, if you’re not going fast enough, you’ll completely fail and if you’re going too fast, you’ll clear the ravine but end up crashing on your head when you reach the other side, so really, you need to work on figuring out the perfect speed and jump timing as both equally contribute to you making it across. Jumping does not require charging or anything, so merely tapping the screen will make you jump, for a few of your runs, you may want to just spend them practicing your jump timing and speed, don’t worry about you goals for these as once you’ve got the practice down, you’ll be able to hit those goals quite easily.
Getting further into the game will allow you to unlock more of Alto’s companions which you are able to play as if you desire; each different character has different skills that you can take advantage of to hit your goals quicker. Certain goals may also require the use of certain characters, so make sure you are using the right character for the level.
Once you’ve gotten you jumping timing down, experiment a little with what you can do. A perfectly timed jump can allow you to bounce off of rocks rather than smash into them, if you’ve timed it just right, you will end up being launched high into the air, take advantage of your temporary airborne status by pulling off tricks as you fall, this will also help with your landing. If you come across the triple flip goal and are having trouble completing it, you may want to try a rock bounce to give that extra bot of altitude that you need.
If you’re enjoying using the special rock breaking trick, don’t getting too used to it or too reliant on it as the rock breaking boom can be seriously unpredictable, a boom can end very suddenly and just as you’re about to crash into a rock, so if you are going to use the boom, just make sure that you’ve actually got time to smash that rock before the boom wears off. If you’re going through the forest and you want to use a boom, don’t. This is literally the worst place for you to possibly use it as you can’t really see all that well, there’s no point wasting them.
Along with the typical backflip, you can also pull off some other awesome tricks in the game. Some of these certain special tricks are required for goals later on in the game, for example, the kiss the rails trick, which can be completed if you land on the very end of a grind wire. If you pull off a backflip where your head ends up getting really close to the ground, you’ll pull off a special proximity flip that gives you a few extra points. You can also pull on of these off if you have a special hover feather, just make sure that you don’t accidentally crash as this is one of those difficult ones that can end up killing you a lot of the time.
After playing the game for quite some time, I was left with the desire to just shrink myself down and go and live in Alto’s beautiful world, I too want to find some lost llamas, enjoy the beauty as I snowboard down a perfectly crafted mountain. Turning this game off is a very odd feeling because you just end up feeling like your life is so chaotic compared to the simplistic life of Alto.
I can honestly say that Alto’s Adventure is one of the better endless runners I’ve ever come across on the app store. It’s simple, yet full to the brim with things to do, it even has the added bonus of competition by way of the game center.
Alto’s Adventure is just one of those games that you have to play through to really understand the hype, this perfect dreamscape in digital form imbues you with a sense of calm and serenity. Sure you can look at the game and and say “oh, it’s just another endless runner..” but really, you don’t understand that full effect that this game can have on you until you actually get into it and play it.
Everything about this game is pristinely designed, from the geometric landscapes to the discreet sound effects. There is nothing gaudy or over the top about this game, playing through this one is actually quite peaceful, in a way it one of those games that is really just giving your hands something to do whilst you get lost in thought. Every choice you make in this game is crucial as too big a jump could make you end up landing on your head and too small a jump could make you fall down a ravine. If you’re the kind that just want to kill a few minutes of time, this is definitely a game for you.
You may develop a longing to further explore Alto’s world, you’ll want to throw that snowboard down, toss a couple carrots to those sneaky llamas and just walk off the other way because your human curiosity is getting the better of you. This world that isn’t even real just feels so peaceful and surreal, you may not want to stop playing.
Artwork: I give Alto’s Adventure a 10/10 for its artwork. The artwork in Alto’s Adventure is very beautifully done, it isn’t gaudy or over the top at all, it’s very simple and that is what helps to keep the sense of peace and serenity in the game.
Music and SFX: I give the game a 10/10 for its music and SFX. Simple. That’s all I can honestly say about the music and sound effects of this game. Staying true to the idea of peace that this game seems to be created on, the sound effects are not obnoxious as they are in many similar games, this really contributes to the smooth feeling of the game.
Story and Originality: I give the game an 9/10 for story and originality. I have mostly positive feelings on the story and originality of this game, the idea of running down a mountain after llamas is a very funny and original one. The one small fact that is provided to us oddly provides a great sense of flow and story, even though you are basing an entire story off one small thing that you’ve seen in the game – you chasing after your escaped llamas – you don’t feel as though it needs anything extra to really push the story forward. Whilst the idea of the endless runner isn’t exactly a new one, Alto’s Adventure definitely brings a lot of new features to the table which is a fact that I can really appreciate. If you aren’t going to bring anything new to a genre, you don’t deserve to make a game.
General Gameplay: I give the game a 9/10 for its general gameplay. For a first version of a game, this one actually surprised me. You expect there to be at least a couple bugs in a newly released game, but to be completely honest, I couldn’t find anything that I could actually faulty in this game, and it runs insanely smoothly.
Addictiveness: I give the game a 10/10 for its addictiveness. The game is constantly changing up what goals you need to complete in the new level you’re playing through, because if this the gameplay doesn’t seem to get boring despite the fact that you are really doing the same thing over and over, it just doesn’t feel like it. The new goals get more and more challenging so they are constantly pushing you forward in the game. Because there is a constant barrage of new things to be done, you just keep playing the game without getting bored, the peaceful atmosphere also means that you don’t get frustrated with the game either, you just end up saying “oh well, that’s okay, I know where I went wrong, let’s try again”. There should just be more games like this one on the market.
Overall, I rate Alto’s Adventure with a 9/10. Nearly perfect.
