The game does a great job of switching up the objectives to keep the levels exciting as they get progressively more difficult as you play your way through 72 original levels across multiple environments. Some levels require you to clear all the blocks on the screen and others have objectives such as getting the pets to the exit. The game starts off very easy just as Candy Crush did and it slowly gets more difficult as it adds more blocks in. Blocks such as wood blockades, bombs, bombs that are locked with keys, pets in carriers, and fenced in blocks. Now I say that Pet Rescue Saga progressively gets harder and that it does, but it doesn’t simply throw you into a hard level without and preparation. The game has a good curve that allows for the levels to get increasingly harder without making some levels impossible for new players.

A sad thing that I see, and happens to be one of the more glaringly obvious similarities to Candy Crush is the amount of IAPs. An IAP is an in app purchase and this game is full of them to be honest. Power-ups, hearts, and additional moves can be bought with real money and while this does not make the game terrible or unplayable it does make the game a bit tedious when it comes down to it. Just like most games on mobile devices or Facebook there are people who can be vastly ahead of you just because of IAPs lending a significant amount help. The game is by no means ruined by this but it surely makes the game a bit easier to beat by paying a bit of money. I usually don’t mind the IAPs in a game but King in general seems to like to add a lot of them into games they put out and I can’t complain because it really is a good way for them to make a profit on this app since it’s free.

The game itself really doesn’t have a lot of diversity to it when it comes to changes in levels but it manages to keep you interested with wanting to complete the levels and possibly beating your friends if they also happen to play this game. Each level makes a good effort at offering a unique challenge with many of them offering plenty of challenge just to complete the levels, and that doesn’t take into account going for three stars in each level if that’s something you look to do in games. The addition of the cute pets in the game makes it a bit more interesting in general and at some times has me feeling a bit bad for them if I can’t complete the level.

Giving and receiving free lives is a big part of the game and can make the game a lot easier for you in general. Make sure that you keep an eye on your lives to avoid overfilling your lives. The lives given by friends stay in your inbox as long as you keep them there but if you accept them when you have full lives, it doesn’t add anything to your lives nor does it allow you to return the ones spent. Pet Rescue Saga, like Candy Crush, is a game that you can manage to sink a lot of time into if you want to beat all the levels, over 900 of them at this point. You can spend hours getting three stars on each level and just beating the game becomes very difficult when you add in the fact that new levels are added quite often to keep the game fresh. The game is slightly more slow paced then the company’s previous game but that does not take away from the game due to it being trickier than Candy Crush.

I am not somebody who usually enjoys games like this because they get under your skin and try to make you get into the game to beat the levels and that makes you continue you on the path. This game is a bit different and I don’t feel as if it gives off the same vibe that Candy Crush does in general. Pet Rescue Saga uses the pets to make the game a bit more interesting and has a better art style in my opinion. The IAPs are a bit of a turn off to me because it does feel a bit forced for you to pay for boosts and lives to make the game easier in general which feels a bit worse to me when I waste time completing a level when I could have paid to get it done a lot faster.

Overall, the game itself was quite fun to play for the first forty or so levels and I would recommend it to my friends. There is a good chance people you know already play Pet Rescue Saga or Candy Crush due to the sheer popularity of the games made by the company. The five lives system really makes the game a bit more difficult to manage when you are failing multiple times and don’t want to spend money or wait the amount of time for them to regenerate. It makes you play more carefully in general because there is something for you to lose in the long run. The map design and art that is on the map and in game really bring out the child-like vibe this game gives off and I really enjoy it trying to get everybody involved in the game.

Pet Rescue Saga Ratings

Artwork: The very cartoonish artwork makes me love playing the game and even going to the map to move to the next level is filled with fun and colorful pictures of the animals across the map. It really looks great, and the colorful levels are visually appealing to me and I’m sure the kids playing it will also love the in game design. I would give Pet Rescue Saga a 8/10 for its artwork.

Music & SFX: The music itself is very soothing and rhythmic which at times is a very ironic music for the game due to the anger that it brings to me when I get stuck on a level. The music does fit well with the art style and the map that the levels are spread out on. I feel like it was well made and I would suggest turning the music on if by chance you have the game muted at all. I would give Pet Rescue Saga a 8/10 for its music and SFX.

Originality: The game itself is not all that original for the most part but the added pets and that aspect really seems to add a level of detail and originality that Candy Crush did not have. I was not a big fan of Candy Crush and this game is much more playable due to the added details as mentioned previously in the review. I would give Pet Rescue Saga a 7/10 for its originality.

UI: The UI itself is very clean and it does also give off the child-like vibe that the rest of the game does. There are very few options to change within the option menu which gives a minimalist type of feel and is something I can surely agree with in a game like this. There are a few different menus to access and they allow you to change the map you are playing on along with the shop to buy boosts and more lives. I would give Pet Rescue Saga a 8/10 for its UI.

Addictiveness: As we approach this topic I realize how addictive this game is as I play it and watch myself check the app and looking to see if I have more lives to use to continue playing the game. I know people who also play this game and they can vouch for the addictiveness of the Pet Rescue due to the gameplay being interesting and progressively getting more difficult as your levels get higher. Pet Rescue has its ups and downs at time but there are always levels to play and I would really agree that this game is addictive and really drags people in as they play. I would give Pet Rescue Saga a 8/10 for its addictiveness.

Final Decision:
Overall, I would give Pet Rescue Saga a solid 9/10 when compared to Candy Crush, and a 8/10 when viewed as its own game. I will be recommending it to people I know and hopefully I can continue playing and not get stuck on any levels anytime soon.
