There are three unit types in Battle Islands: Army, Air Force, and Navy. Each corresponds to the three strategic area of air, land, and sea, and each unit has its own strategy for success. When deciding which unit to upgrade, or which to deploy, it’s important to analyze the housing space, spawn count, speed, and range of that unit.
There are limitations to housing such that each unit has a certain housing requirement and once your allotted space has been occupied you cannot purchase new units. Smaller units like individual soldiers obviously take up less space than a tank, based on your overall strategy how many large/and or small units you have will vary. An offensive strategy will employ more large units like tanks whereas a more defensive strategy will have a lot of infantry men.
When getting replacement vehicles or troops there is always a waiting time before the new unit arrives, this is referred to as production time. More expensive items will require longer production times.
Speed and range are attributes of units. Usually a unit that is gifted in speed will lack in range and vice versa, this insures balance, knowing the attributes of your units will pay huge dividends when you’re deciding who to employ in battle.
Let’s begin with army, the army is the first type of unit you will encounter when you open up Battle Islands. All army units are restricted to usage on land, they are all housed within the barracks facility and they are promoted via the command center. To get army units from island to island you must utilize the landing craft, a navy unit whose sole purpose is moving army units. The landing craft is free and has no production limit, upgrading the landing craft will increase your health, it has the most potential for health upgrades when compared to every other unit in Battle Islands.
With army you will have 5 different types of units at your disposal: Rifleman, mortar men, bazooka, jeep, and tanks. The rifleman in Iron Force is the equivalent of a chess pawn. Individually they’re weak, having low health and they can be easily damaged, at first glance one might mistake them as being virtually useless in the face of much more serious weapons such as tanks. However, in large groups they pose a significant threat to any invading army, distracting invaders from other units and acting as great preventative measures for a ground invasion.
Rifleman come standard equipped with a Thompson submachine gun which they use to attack any enemies within their range. Rifleman spawn quickly and are housed in barracks. These tough soldiers can be packed in the barracks like sardines in a can. Rifleman can be promoted through the Command Bunker, once promoted their health and damage will increase, this subsequently improves the health and damage of the entire unit.
A great strategist will understand the importance of a good rifleman and will improve their defenses by upgrading their rifleman frequently and keeping a large store of them in the barracks.
Next are the mortar men. Much like the rifleman, mortar men are easily stored in the barracks and their rate of production is second to only the rifleman. Mortar men are specialized in long range attacks of an enemies defenses, they have the capability to shoot over fortifications, making them essential for any defensive strategy. Strategically placed mortar men are a great supplement to your defensive strategy.
Unlike the tank and the Jeep, which are both great for offensive strategies, and the rifleman and the mortar men, which are ideal for defensive strategies, the bazooka is a great versatile weapon that supplements both offensive and defensive strategies. The bazooka is capable of attacks to fortified structures as well as the heavily armored tanks it was designed to immobilize.
Moving on to the jeep, you will find it as a great offensive tool to be used sparingly as it has a high space requirement, taking up more storage space in your barracks, also it is produced slower than any unit with the exception of the tank. The Jeep is the fastest unit available and is mounted with a turret machine gun, allowing you to quickly round up supplies from the enemy and to deal lightning fast immediate strikes on the enemy. As opposed to the rifleman and the mortar men, the Jeep is limited to six promotion levels.
The Tank is an M4A1 Sherman that is absolutely foundational to any winning strategy in Battle Islands. Although it is the slowest moving, slowest producing, and it utilizes the most space in the barracks, it is also the strongest and your most powerful army unit causing the most damage to enemy islands. Use the tank for long range attacks but time your blows wisely since the rate of fire is relatively slow. Like the Jeep, the tank has only 6 levels as opposed to the customary 8.
The Navy is the second unit type available to you. They comprise the “sea” portion of the gameplay and all units are housed within the Shipyard. There are three Navy units: gunboat, warship and submarine. Like all the other units, Navy units are promoted via the command bunker thus impriving health and damage.
The gun boat is the navy equivalent of the rifleman. Gun boats are equipped with turrets, they are the fastest of the navy units making them ideal for quick attacks on an enemies defenses. The gun boat is produced quickly, it has low storage requirements, and it can attack army, navy, and air force units. A great offensive strategy is to distract your enemy by barraging them with quick gun boat attacks while simultaneously preparing your heavier artillery.
Warships are the navy equivalent of the army’s tanks. They have strong long range cannons but they are very slow and have high housing requirements. Use the warship for strategic high causality offensive attacks to the enemy. Although largely an offensive unit, the warship also has the second highest health of any navy unit and it comes equipped with medium grade armor, so don’t concentrate too much on upgrading this unit’s defense before upgrading defensively deficient units.
Terribly slow and occupying a massive amount of space in your inventory, the submarines saving grace is that it is the most powerful navy unit and it is stealthily hidden beneath the cover of the sea. The submarine is a great unit to keep up your sleeve in times of desperation, or when you want to deliver that final crushing blow to your enemy. However, make sure to keep your submarine hidden because its low defenses and turtle like agility will cause it to fall under the lightest fire.
The final unit type available, and perhaps the most exhilarating, is the Air Force. Air force units are housed in the hangar. There are three units available, the fighter, the bomber, and the torpedo bomber.
The fighter is the first air force unit available, it is the quickest and should be utilized similar to the gun ship in the navy. The two bombers are strategically identical to the tank in the army, with the only exception being that the torpedo bomber is the only unit that actively pursues navy units exclusively. The two bombers are slow and deal a tremendous amount of damage.

Knowing these facts of Battle Islands will do you a world of wonders in achieving your in game objectives and developing your overall strategy. Utilize the combination of units that are right for you, and synchronize your attacks based on the attributes of each unit to maximize damage inflicted on the enemy and to ultimately regain the territories owned by the axis powers.
Battle Islands is an especially in depth strategy game with many aspects of it that keep it fascinating. I enjoyed the historical aspect as well and the depth with which the developers tried to keep it historically accurate without it seeming too much like a reenactment or a lecture.
Music was great and helped to create an action environment, the graphics were similarly up to par with the superior gameplay.
Despite all of the positive aspects of Battle Islands, there were some aspects which needed improvement. For example the cost of upgrading seemed far too expensive, requiring a considerable amount of resources it’s much easier to simply buy new forces rather than upgrading. Consider upgrades are such a large part of the game it was a surprise they were so expensive. Also an offline version would’ve been great when I was in an area with a poor internet connection, this would also be great because it wouldn’t drain my battery nearly as quickly.
