The play style just difference too much when you play for virtual money or for real money. When you play for real money, you are more cautions because you are more attached to it. Losing real money might have real consequences on your real life but losing virtual chips will not put a dent in your real life (hopefully). The problem with games such as Zynga Poker is that every player tend to play really aggressively for this reason exactly.
They will have crappy hands but still go all in every single hand so you cannot tell if they are bluffing or not. The best way to counter this is to be patience. You need to learn to play like you have something to lose and read the game first. See what the other players at the table do. If they just go all in every single hand, you should only play at their game if you have a good enough hand and just crush them after that. Anther problems is that a lot of people think that they are better than you at poker because of this very reason. I have played Zynga Poker – Texas Holdem for about two hours before I could conclude that almost every player at the tables I played on are just casual players who do not know what the hell they are doing.
The way you can counter these players is by learning how to be patience. Just wait around and see what the people at the table are doing and if they are doing it repetitively. Once you got the hang of their “strategies” you should start betting when you have good hands. This will demoralize them and they will make more mistakes after which you can empty them of their chips and send them home crying. You win at this game by being patience, using strategy and using your position to your advantage.
When I first started playing Zynga Poker – Texas Holdem, I got shown around in-game. The game showed you where to log in to start playing, where to tap to sit at a table and play some poker and a few other things. The game itself is not overly complicated. You have chips, you buy-in at tables and start playing poker. The interface itself is very smooth and clear. You can customize your character a bit, change your name and your avatar but that is about it. You do not need more in this game to be able to play anyways. I like the fact that there are different modes you can choose from to play. You can also connect with your Facebook to play against your friends but if you do not have a Facebook account, you can create a Zynga account and add friends on your friends list, which is a nice alternative.
Unfortunately there were also a few negative aspects about Zynga Poker – Texas Holdem. When I started playing at a table, I noticed that the player base is very aggressive and many players do not actually know what they are doing. This is of course understandable, everyone needs to start somewhere to learn how to play poker but I must admit that this did ruin the gameplay a bit for me. A good choice would be if there were alternative tables for beginners and more moderate players at poker.
I made a Zynga account to play poker and I had about 200.000 chips when I closed the game. The next day I logged in to find out that I lost a chunk of my chips for no apparent reason. While this didn’t bother me much because of the fact that I didn’t spend real money to buy chips, I can still imagine this pissing off other players who did spend real money on Zynga Poker. I started researching on the internet if this happened to other players as well and it did.
What I also read online is that Zynga Poker – Texas Holdem’s algorithm is fluked. Apparently employees at Zynga sit in at high-tier tables and can see what cards other players have. They use this to empty out other players of their hard earned chips to even out the economy of the game and make it more “balanced”. I also read a couple of times that the game will be easy on you at the beginning but the more chips you have, the harder the game gets after which it becomes impossible to win anymore no matter how good your hand is, you will always get beaten because the river will not be in your favor. If these claims are true than Zynga should be in big trouble because there are many players that spend real money on this game, buying chips and casino gold.
Artwork: I give Zynga Poker – Texas Holdem an 8/10 for its artwork. The interface of the game is smooth and you can read everything clearly. The different game modes have nice shiny logos and everything fits well together. The loading screens also gave me a casino feeling which is nice of course. The graphics and effects when you are playing at a table are nice and everything is detailed as if you were really sitting at a poker table. You can even tip the dealer.
Music & SFX: I give Zynga Poker – Texas Holdem a 7/10 for its music and SFX. There were no soundtracks or any other music I heard during my gameplay but I think that’s better when you are playing a casino game. You want to be able to focus on gameplay instead of being distracted by some soundtrack playing in the background. Zynga Poker – Texas Holdem did have a few sound effects and a vibration function that helped you when it was time for your turn. The sound effects were minimal, such as a cowbell SFX when your next turn was up or when you were tapping on menu buttons.
Story & Originality: I give Zynga Poker – Texas Holdem a 7/10 for its story and originality. There are literally hundreds of poker games out on the app stores but I will still rate Zynga Poker – Texas Holdem a high rating for originality because I think they did a good job with the different modes they implemented in the game. The fact that you can form groups and play with your friends is also a very nice feature.
General Gameplay: I give Zynga Poker – Texas Holdem a 7/10 for general gameplay. The gameplay itself is pretty straightforward but it will take a little while to get used to the different modes. Once you get the basics, the gameplay experience will greatly improve and you will be able to play as you like. It is unfortunate that there are so many inexperienced players though I will not deduct points because of this, since Zynga can’t do much to counter this. Perhaps a difficulty class would have been nice (beginner, moderate, experienced).
Addictiveness: I give Zynga Poker – Texas Holdem a 7/10 for addictiveness. If you are into casino games and poker, I can imagine this game being pretty addictive. With the daily free spin on the slot machine and all the free chips you get by leveling up, the developers made sure that you would continue playing their poker game instead of others. At the times that I played there were sometimes over 100.000 players in the game, so I suppose the figures show that Zynga Poker – Texas Holdem trumps other poker games. I did read some very nasty things about the developers which you can read in my review. These are of course just other people’s experiences so I can’t tell if they are true or not. I do hope that the developers will find a fix for chips disappearing from peoples accounts.
All things considered, I give Zynga Poker – Texas Holdem a 7/10.
