The gameplay is fairly simple and intuitive- you throw a ball by swinging it with your finger, and then you control the tilt of the ball by tilting your phone and using your accelerometer.
You play through five frames of a normal game of bowling. For those who might not be familiar with the game of bowling, I’ll explain it here. If you’re already familiar, feel free to skip to the next paragraph! Bowling is a game in which you throw a ball down a lane in order to hit 9 pins. You get 2 throws per frame except for the last frame where you get 3, and there are 5 frames (in this game). You get points based on how many pins you knock down with each throw, getting more points if you get a strike (knock down all the pins on the first throw) or a spare (knock down all the pins on your second throw).
There is an additional game mode called Trick shot where you attempt to complete ‘trickshots’- that is, difficult shots to make during the game. These involve scenarios such as splits, where there’s a gap in between two pins, and you’ll need to hit both in order to win. You bet and win chips just the same as you do with a regular game, so if you find yourself particularly good at these sorts of activities, you’ll definitely want to pick up a few games of this mode. There’s also a couple of mini games: roulette and slots. These are not free to play, but require tickets.
You play only against online opponents, so your gameplay experience is going to change dramatically based upon who you’re matched up against. I found that during the first few levels I had a very easy time of it, with increasing difficulty as you move forward in the levels, but even there, your mileage may vary. You can get matched against a much tougher opponent than you’re used to in any level, or you can find yourself matched to the opposite. You can earn approximately 500,000 chips by logging in with social media without ever actually playing a game, so it’s not until you reach levels higher than that that you can be assured of a reasonably good match each game.
Login with Facebook if you can. Not only can you then play with your friends, but you also get a free 200,000 chips.
You get a daily free spin at the slot machine, so make sure you log in every day to get some free chips. This can also be used to help you out if you have a long streak of bad luck and don’t have enough chips to play!
When you get certain in game events, such as when you rank up, you can share these to twitter in order to get another free 5000 chips.
There’s a wide array of different things you can do to get free chips-including watching videos, which I would certainly suggest. The Size Up powerup you can get by watching videos is also worth it, as it costs you nothing but time. You can tweet about the game for 250,000 chips, which is most definitely just as worth it as logging in to facebook.
If you’re particularly interested in paying for the game, you should get one of the special packs, as you save a significant amount of money that way. The starter pack, for instance, comes with items and chips that would normally cost you $30, but through the pack you pay only $5.
While this might go without saying- this is an accelerometer heavy game. This means that you need to have free range of motion with your wrist in order to effectively play the game. That said, use small, precise movements- if you swing your wrist to the left or to the right you’re sure to get a gutterball- or at least to not hit any pins.
Play the game where you have a steady internet connection. There were a few times I was playing the game on mobile internet and lost my connection ( I can sometimes have spotty service when traveling), but when you lose your connection you lose the game you’re in and your chips are not refunded.
You should experiment with different balls and techniques- I found that much like in real life, I like to throw the ball straight down the middle as hard as I can, but that’s rarely the most efficient way to bowl- it can be difficult to get strikes that way.
You get a mission each game- such as getting a gutter ball and still winning the match which rewards you with cash. That cash can be used to purchase equipment. Earning this cash can honestly be more important than winning chips in some cases, especially if you’re on the lower difficulty levels where you don’t lose many chips.
Bowling King does its best to simultaneously offer you good gameplay and to encourage you to spend money. Every time you start the game you’re given a promotion that you can buy in-game chips for real money. You’re capable of getting a good number of things for free by just watching videos. There’s a good number of things you can buy: Equipment, Diamonds, Cash, Chips, Powerups, and Tickets. The number of different premium currencies is baffling. Thankfully, you’re able to earn most of these in game, without having to spend money, it’s just a slow process- only earning one or two per game.
Artwork
Bowling King: The Real Match looks fairly good for a bowling game. The balls and pins are rendered in 3d and there are a number of new balls, pins, and lanes that you can buy or earn in game over time. The interface is pretty well designed if not particularly pretty. 7/10
Music & SFX
The sound effects were serviceable, the ball hits the pins and they make a fantastic crashing sound much like you’d expect an a bowling alley. There is music, but it’s not particularly great. The value in the game comes primarily from gameplay, not from the music or sound. 6/10
Story & Originality
There’s no story to the game, you just bowl. I really enjoyed the use of the accelerometer, that’s a feature that you find in every phone nowadays, but you don’t see it used very often. The trick shots game mode is good, it’s a puzzle that you solve through skill. 7/10
General Gameplay
The general gameplay is pretty good. The controls are fairly intuitive, and as I’ve said before I did enjoy the tilt features. I was frustrated with how slowly you can earn the various premium currencies in game. While chips come (and go!) quickly, it’s a real pain to earn tickets, diamonds, or cash. The fact that the game was always online made it extra frustrating in a few instances where I had issues connecting to the servers or when my mobile connection dropped out. The game ran perfectly over wifi, however. 6/10
Addictiveness
There’s no energy mechanic, so you can bowl as much as you want in a day. You’re only limited by your skill- you can theoretically never lose a match and just keep playing and playing. The randomness of the slots and roulette table were alright, but I was interested in earning enough money to get the new balls and pins. 7/10
Overall: 7/10
I’d recommend it. If you’re a fan of bowling or if you get a rush by crushing opponents online, then you’ll find some enjoyment here. If you’re not a fan of bowling, you won’t find much to recommend this one- as that’s exactly what it is: pure bowling. If you’re frustrated by slow progression you might get a bit frustrated but it is a solid bowling experience with nifty controls. If you’re worried about online privacy with this app, you could consider creating a separate Facebook account under an assumed name for games such as these. The game does display your profile picture and your name when matching you with an opponent, but you would lose out on the ‘play with friends’ feature.
