World of Tanks Blitz is a mobile MMO adaption of the PC hit “World of Tanks” developed my Wargaming (Wargaming.net). World of Tanks Blitz is available for both iOS and Android devices. All gameplay takes place in one of 10 virtual maps that vary between narrow European towns to vast desert landscapes. Games are formatted for two teams of 7 tanks, to win teams must eliminate all of the opposing tanks. There are over 100 tanks to choose from and a plethora of upgrades are available to allow players to customize their tanks. Tank styles come in 4 distinct forms: USSR, Nazi Germany, U.S.A. and United Kingdom. There are also 4 different tank classes: light, medium, heavy, and tank destroyers.
Much like real military rankings, players earn badges, awards and are elevated in rank for their actions in the battlefield. Similarly, players can be demoted or banned for engaging in dishonest gaming or failing in the battlefield (e.g. attacking their own teammates).
World of Tanks Blitz is a true free-to-play game, although players have the option of purchasing coins and premium content, premium players do not gain a significant competitive advantage over free players, but they do advance quicker and earn bonuses easier as opposed to free players. There are no energy bars, fuel, or gaming credits, to stop continuous gameplay.

Ideally I would start a group Skype, Facetime, or Whatsapp chat with my teammates so we can collaborate in real time. When this wasn’t possible we would at least try and stick to our default follow the leader model. Although World of Tanks Blitz has a built in chat module, this is only accessible before or after gameplay and is virtually useless when encountering unforeseen circumstances. As a newbie it’s vitally important to know your role. If you have the luxury of teaming up with a long time player I’d highly recommend utilizing this protégé relationship to your advantage.
To really advance quickly in this game, especially if you’re going the free route, it helps to specialize in one particular class of tanks and/or one particular line of tanks.
There are four classes of tanks: light, medium, heavy, and tank destroyers. Light tanks are quick but easily damaged. When you begin World of Tanks Blitz you have three light tanks, these are best used for scouting. As you progress you’ll encounter less and less light tanks so make sure to at least verse yourself in the other classes. Medium tanks are just as their name implies, mediocre in all aspects, not especially light, nor are they especially durable, but useful for the strategists who likes to vary his or her gameplay based on their surroundings or who they are playing with or against. Next are heay tanks, slow, bulky, with extra fortified hulls these tanks can take damage like no other! Heavy tanks can also shell out quite the attack and are best for more experienced users.
Finally there are Tank Destroyers, these destroyers are terribly ineffective at withstanding attack but can cause maximum damage to the opponent. Destroyers are best used as snipers, far from the central action but absolutely critical in dismantling the enemies defenses.
Besides these there are the lines: American, Russian, Nazi German, and British. Each line has its own perks and advantages, as well as disadvantages, so make sure to do your research before committing to a specific line. For example, American tanks are balanced insofar as speed, defenses, and attack, thus making them ideal for beginners. Whereas Russian tanks are quicker and do more damage, even though they have weaker armor, thus making them more suitable for advanced players who are adept at evasion. Either way, remember to prioritize your upgrades in accordance with your class and line. One of the biggest mistakes I see new players do is to try and specialize in all types of tanks and spreading themselves too thin, whereas they could’ve been advanced in one line they end up as novices in three different lines and classes.
After excelling in your specialization, it’s imperative to select teammates who are also specialized in separate fields. Much like in sports, each player must specialize in their position so the team can e successful, if you had a football team with 6 midfielders and no goalies, you’d have a hard time scoring points and thus winning games. Having a strategy can also be just as important, as a beginner you want to hang back a little and pick up on the teams strategy, you want to avoid capturing the base immediately as this may open you up to attack, and you also want to avoid camping and becoming an easy target.
Off the battlefield its vital that you utilize you prioritize your tank upgrades to match your specialization. The tank is divided into guns, turrets, engine, ammunition, and suspension. Each aspect of the tank varies by a player’s tier and ranking. When upgrading your tank make sure to keep these tips and cheats in mind:
The gun refers to the cannon, the main weapon on board a tank. The quality of the gun is determined by the caliber, the penetration, and the rate of fire. Although a gun may be available for you it’s important to match it to the appropriate turret, the dome like device upon which the gun swivels and is bound on its base.
You must remember to refill ammunition before each match! Few things are more detrimental to a match than poor preparation of the tank.
If your role on the battlefield is largely stationary, traverse speed is not a priority attribute, rather look for high caliber (longer) guns.
Equip consumables that will complement your weaker attributes.
As far as game currency, World of Tanks Blitz has credits (also known as “silver”) and Gold. Credits are earned in-game through your actions and achievements, on the other hand Gold is purchased with real money, it is used to unlock premium content, and it can be used to purchase credits. Here’s really cool cheat though, when you first start out your aim is to earn credits, experience points, and free experience. Whereas experience is tank specific you can use free experience for any tank you like, to get free experience quickly go to the purchase store inside the app and spend 1 gold to convert 25 experience points into 25 free experience points. Or, you can convert gold directly into credits to quickly advance.
First impressions are fundamental to our perceptions of an app, and upon first playing World of Tanks Blitz it’s obvious this isn’t a sophomoric effort by the developers but rather a well thought out, intricate, and elaborate imagining of the battle tank genre. The historical accuracy will wow the war buff and fascinate the novice. Perhaps the most endearing aspect is the community of players dedicated to explaining, assisting, and collaborating with one another.
On a less jovial note the tutorial was lengthy and intricate, not quite the passive and intuitive gameplay of many mobile games. Nevertheless, the instructions weren’t especially complex and the information so cumbersome as to hinder my progress or attention. For most players I wouldn’t imagine the tutorial taking longer than half a day, and even then you’re still capable of playing full games during the tutorial and you earn thousands of xp and gold coins for completing it as opposed to skipping. Furthermore, several of the updates did lead to some connection glitches on my iPhone that led to lagging, however these were swiftly resolved within a few hours.
A further note, although the gameplay was fairly good on my iPhone 5s and iPhone 6, there was an exponential rise in quality when I began playing on the iPad. With the iPad you can truly take advantage of nuances on the maps and you aren’t burdened by your fingers blocking half of the screen. The iPad made it much more fun to play and I couldn’t imagine going back to the iPhone unless I were travelling.
In total I would say it’s easily one of the most immersive and high quality mobile MMOs I’ve played on iOS and I’m eagerly awaiting more news from Wargaming.net for versions that are optimized for newer iOS’s.
Artwork: 9.5/10Clearly a lot of time and effort went into the artwork, it looked amazing on iPhone and fantastic on iPad. Colors & lighting gave that mid-20th century battlefield feel, very much what you would expect from a PC or console game.
Music & FX: 10/10Couldn’t give higher praise for the music and effects. Possible tens of thousands of gun, tank, suspension, and turret combinations and you could even differentiate between small and large caliber sounds. I loved playing World of Tanks Blitz with my headphones on for thrilling, edge of the seat suspense.
Story & Originality: 6/10This was a straight up death match game, not much originality there. World of Tanks Blitz stands out in its attention to detail not so much it’s background story, which is just World War 2.
General Gameplay: 9/10Matches were short, roughly five minutes, but still long enough to develop strategy and tactics in the long term. For mobile games it’s important to balance match time and overall game time, I liked that I was able to play a few short matches throughout the day to aid me in my long term in-game career goals, without feeling like I was wasting time on short tasks.
Addictiveness: 9/10The fact that there are no barriers to gameplay length and time, and ads were few and far between, it is highly likely anyone who picks up this game will get addicted to it. Also the level of detail and all the cool things you learn about 20th century warfare provides the added benefit of learning while you game, thus dissipating the “guilty pleasure” feeling and replacing it with a feeling that you’re really being quite productive while having an immense amount of fun!
