Imagine being chased by a huge mountain of banana peels, and the only way to survive is by running away from it, dodging obstacles and using the helping hand off other jungle animals. This is exactly what Banana Kong is all about. Your primate character needs to use his special moves and dodge every single obstacle, collect bananas and getting as far as possible in a level. Banana Kong has been developed and successfully released by game developer FDG Entertainment and is very popular among mobile gamers. The game has been downloaded over a whopping figure of fifty million times with a rating of 4.3 out of 5 on Google Play Store and a 4.5 out of 5 star rating on iOS App Store.
The gameplay in Banana Kong starts off with a nicely build tutorial, teaching you what you are supposed to do in the game. Your goal in Banana Kong is to run away from the mountain of banana peels that are following you, while avoiding obstacles in your way. While doing this, you also need to collect as many bananas as possible. When you collect several bananas, you will be able to use your characters booster, which makes you dash in a fast pace, for several seconds. You can use the dash booster to crush obstacles, but also to enter different areas in the level. There is no real way to win in Banana Kong, but it is still challenging because you can compare scores with your friends and see who can take their character the furthest in a level.
The challenge in Banana Kong is to get your character as far as possible, without getting stuck on any obstacle. The further you progress through a level, the more difficult it becomes. Thankfully, there are different kinds of jungle animals, which you can ride, and they help you progress even further through a level. The jungle animal has a health bar, and if it gets hit too many times, the animal will run away and you will be on your own again.
As mentioned above, you can use your characters dash booster to get into different areas in a level. You can dash through pipes to get to the water level or through wooden doors to get to the underground levels. Different areas are like the bonus levels of Banana Kong. You can easily collect a lot of bananas and travel a far distance. If you get hit by an obstacle in any of these areas, you will not have to restart a level. You will simply be booted up back to the regular jungle level and you will have to continue running away from the mountain of banana peels.
There is an in-game store where you can purchase vanity items and different kinds of boosters and power-ups. You can also upgrade the existing boosters of your character, making it easier to collect bananas and progress through the game.
Banana Kong In-game store
There is only one kind of currency in Banana Kong, which is in the form of bananas. You can easily obtain bananas by collecting them during the levels. Every banana that you collect during your gameplay, will be added to your inventory. You can then use your bananas to purchase items in the in-game store. There are five different categories in the in-game store, where you can spend your bananas on to purchase items.
The first category in the in-game store is called Hats, and in this category you can purchase different kinds of hats that your character can wear. The hats are purely vanity and will not give you any special powers or anything like that. The price for the hats range from 500 bananas up till 10.000 bananas. The second category is called Power-ups and in this category you can purchase different kinds of specialty items that will help you advantage during your gameplay. The power-ups have several levels, so you can upgrade them even further for them to have a much better effect during your gameplay. The third category is called Utilities and in this category you can purchase items that will increase your characters boost and will give you extra lives so that you can continue playing, even if you hit an obstacle.
The fourth category is called Parachutes, which is also a vanity item and will not give you any special powers. Your character has a simple parachute, which you can use to glide down whenever you need to. The price for parachutes starts at 500 bananas and goes up till 5000 bananas. The fifth and last category is called Super Powers and in this category, you can purchase several super powers with real money. You can also make the game ad-free forever by spending $0,99 and purchasing the Remove Ads option.
Anytime when you crush against an obstacle with your character, you will have to restart the level. If you do not feel like restarting and you would like to continue where you left off, you will have to use several of your golden hearts. The problem is, that you only have a few golden hearts and they are almost impossible to obtain by playing the game. However, you can purchase golden hearts in the in-game store with real money. The price for golden hearts starts at $1,99 for the smallest amount of 5 golden hearts and goes up till $29,99 for the largest amount of 250 golden hearts.
Banana Kong is a super fun game that you can play on your mobile device, but bananas and golden hearts are to crucial components to the game. When you are playing Banana Kong, you will have to know a couple of movements that will greatly help you during your gameplay. You need to know that your power dash will break any obstacle, and will allow you to continue playing. You need to regenerate the power of your power dash by collecting bananas, but it only takes like ten bananas before you can use your power dash again. Sometimes, you cannot avoid an obstacle in front of you, but you can always swipe down to quickly move down a layer. There are flowers in the level design of Banana Kong, and if you swipe down on them, you will be able to jump higher. When you jump down a vine at the very end, you will get a nice boost of bananas. You will have to practice this move a couple of times because it is pretty difficult to get the correct timing.
All the bananas that you collect, will be added up and saved in your inventory. You can then use the bananas to purchase a lot of items and upgrades in the in-game store. There are upgrades that will increase the amount of bananas that you can collect during your gameplay. There are also upgrades for the other jungle animals, which you can ride if you jump on them. The animals will become stronger and can take more damage before they run away. You should also look into purchasing utilities, which will significantly increase the amount of bananas that you can collect during your gameplay. There are utilities that will reward you with a certain amount of bananas, if you reach a certain amount of distance.
Before I started playing Banana Kong, I didn’t really know what to expect from it. The screenshots made me think of the popular Donkey Kong games, but Banana Kong is a very different game compared to them. The gameplay in Banana Kong starts off with a tutorial, teaching you what you have to do, how to control your character, how to dodge obstacles and how to use your special booster power to crush through obstacles. After the tutorial ends, the gameplay becomes pretty straightforward, but still very entertaining to play in my opinion. The level designs are very nice and it is very nice to see that every time you start to play, the level design is random. This means that you cannot memorize the level and it will always be challenging. I am a person who enjoys challenges in games, and Banana Kong has that going pretty well for it. Banana Kong has some pretty nice music and sound effects, combined with its graphics, the game is very pleasant and addictive to play.
Unfortunately, there are also several negative aspects about Banana Kong. The first negative aspect is the fact that there are a ton of advertisements implemented into the game, which are very annoying and obstructive. The advertisements come in the form of pop-ups, which show up exactly when you are about to tap on the screen. This makes it feel like the developers are trying to trick people into tapping on the advertisements, just so that they can generate a bit of an income for themselves. This makes Banana Kong feel like a cheap cash grab, especially because it is so popular among mobile gamers. The worst part about the advertisements in Banana Kong is the fact that, if you accidently tap on an ad, your game will minimalize and your browser will start up. This is really obstructive and a real turn off from Banana Kong, and I feel like the developers should think about their advertisement placement if they want to keep all their players happy and keep playing Banana Kong.
The second negative aspect about Banana Kong is the fact that the developers have implemented playtime limitations into the game. When you hit an obstacle in the game, you will have the option to keep playing by spending hearts or you can start over and retry from the beginning of the level. The problem with this is that the hearts are only obtainable by spending real money on the game, which is a shame because this simply is a punishment to loyal players of Banana Kong. There are also a lot of items in the in-game store which are purchasable with bananas that you collect during your gameplay. The problem is, that there are many items that you can only purchase with real money. These kind of negative aspects are a real turn off from the game because of the fact that not every player can afford to spend real money on a free-to-play game. Players should be able to unlock the whole game, without spending a single dime.
Artwork: I give Banana Kong an 8/10 for its artwork. The graphics and animations in Banana Kong are pretty decent, especially considering that it is a mobile game. Before I started playing Banana Kong, I did not really know what to expect of it, but I was pleasantly surprised of the level of detail in the game. I really like the fact that the characters and special rideable animals in the game have idle-animations and facial expressions. They show you when your character is in pain or when he is in panic, which simply enhances the gameplay for me. In my opinion, the developers did a very good job in combining the graphics and animations of Banana Kong together, making them fit perfectly. The graphics are very balanced, which is always nice to see.
Music & SFX: I give Banana Kong a 7/10 for its music and SFX. There are several soundtracks implemented into the gameplay of Banana Kong, which are very nice and easy on the ears. I like the fact that the soundtracks fit the “”jungle” theme of the game, making them fit very well with the graphics of the game. Banana Kong also has several sound effects, ranging from main menu button SFX to crashing your character into an obstacle SFX. Even though the developers did a good job with the music of Banana Kong, I feel like that the quality of the music and SFX could have been a bit higher.
Story & Originality: I give Banana Kong an 8/10 for its story and originality. I have played a lot of mobile games over the years but I have never played a game such as Banana Kong before. The game has a lot of features which are pretty original, even though the gameplay is very simple. I really like the fact that the level design changes, the more you progress through a level. There is really no story behind Banana Kong, other than what you experience during the tutorial. All you have to do is run away from a huge mountain of banana peels and make sure that you do not hit any obstacle in your way. Even though that there are probably many games such as Banana Kong in the app stores, I still feel like the game is very original and have enjoyed it thoroughly.
General Gameplay: I give Banana Kong an 8/10 for general gameplay. The gameplay in Banana Kong starts with a tutorial, teaching you how to play the game and getting the hang of the controls and special moves. After the tutorial ends, the general gameplay becomes pretty straightforward, but still very fun to play in my opinion. This is due to the fact that the developers have implemented an in-game store where you can purchase specialty and vanity items. After you have played the game for a while, the gameplay still remains challenging because the level design is random and you never know what obstacles to expect. I am a person who enjoys a challenge in games, which makes Banana Kong a perfect game for me.
Addictiveness: I give Banana Kong a 7/10 for addictiveness. I always dislike it when developers of games implement restrictions or limitations to the playtime in their games. While there are no timers in the game, it is unfortunate to see that there are golden hearts, which are basically the lives you have. When you lose all of your golden hearts, you will not be able to continue where you left of and you will have to start every level from the beginning. This really slows down the gameplay for me and is somewhat of a turn off.
