Today we are back with another addition to the never ending ‘endless’ genre. Literally my mind always say ‘No man, not another endless!!!’ whenever I get an endless game for review because almost more than half of the games that I’ve reviewed in my life belonged to the endless genre and even more boring part is that most of them hardly featured any difference in gameplay. There are few developers that tried to give a different taste by defining endless in their own way and ‘Rebel Twins’ is one of them. So far, I have reviewed two of their games, both were endless and fabulous especially Aliens Drive Me Crazy which was hardly weak in any department. Following into the footsteps of their previous games Rebel Twins launched ‘Dragon Hills’, which is today’s point of focus. Dragon Hills is available for Windows Phones, Android and iOS users, and has astonishing 4.5/5 stars user rating on App stores of respective platforms. Just like Rebel Twin’s previously reviewed titles this game too features gorgeous cartoonish artwork, smooth animated UI, attractive music and differentiating gameplay which makes this game definitely addictive.
Almost everyone has heard the fairy tale of The Princess & Dragon in which a princess is trapped inside a tower waiting for her hero to rescue her from a Dragon that loves gold and lives inside the tower. This game is based upon this fairy tale but with a slight modification and the princess will disappointed to know that knights around the tower aren’t there for her but for gold. So Knights instead of rescuing the princess, steals gold from the tower. The princess felt it as an insult and to avenge it she wakes the dragon. That’s the point where you, the user, kicks in. You will take the role of the Princess riding the dragon and go through infinite/endless levels collecting as much coins as possible, flying, diving inside ground, destroying those knights and their camps to avenge her insult. It’s the second time I have seen endless divided into levels and both games are from Rebel Twins.
Dragon hills starts off with asking permission for Google Play games, which is a plus point if you want to play this game across several devices and also if you have to reinstall game due to any mishap. This game also supports leaderboards which means you can check and compare your rank with your friends and rest of worldwide players. This game can help you to rise level of your Google Play Games’ account as it features fifteen achievements which can give you a total of forty-one hundred experience points. These achievement range from using Freeze Blast to kill ten knights during one game till Destroying eight building in a single run as Lord of the Skies.
After the sign in screen you will be greeted with a beautifully animated intro and the main dashboard. Just like Aliens Drive Me Crazy the dashboard has wonderful artwork and transitions between different sections of dashboard are extremely fluid. Let’s tap on the play icon. The gameplay will start with a single screenshot of ‘How to Play’ that will explain you about the controls of this game. The Dragon will move automatically along the surface, all you have to do is press on any part of the screen to time the dive of dragon beneath the surface so that it could hop up in the air at the required angle, for the right time when it comes out of the surface. The longer you will keep the screen pressed the deeper the dive and higher the jump will be but you cannot stay beneath the surface for much longer otherwise the Dragon will die because of suffocation.
Initially, the game feels a bit difficult and dry because it takes time to master the dive in and out to collect the coins, and there won’t be any powerups on the road because you’ll to unlock them. As the queen rides along the way she’ll face different knights. There will be ones that will throw arrows on dragon, then there are riders, flyers which throw bombs, few with shield and a lot more, and then at the end of each level boss(es) awaits for you. Other than knights there will be canon towers, lava pool, huge spiked shield and lava falls. Dragon has limited health which starts at one heart but can be increased through upgrades. Dragon can be injured by arrows, bombs and rebounds whenever he collides spiked shields or lava falls but if anyhow Dragon touches lava pool he will lose all of his health immediately.
The number of bosses that you have to face at the end of the level increases and they also get stronger. The weakest of the boss uses a war hammer, after that you’ll meet stone thrower, fire balls thrower and another one that can torch small surface area. Make sure that you get close to these bosses so that princess can kill them by using her sword and also avoid all of the things they throw or leave behind as it will harm your dragon. Last boss, after his death, will turn into a pool of gold but most of the times that pool isn’t approachable.
There are two types of coins that you’ll collect in the game. One of them is simple gold coins which is the only and primary currency of this game, and is used to purchase all kind of upgrades and unlockables. The other type is blue shelled coins and collecting these will speed up the dragon but will not result in any coin addition.
There are various powerups available which can remove the dryness of gameplay and make the game extremely enjoyable but they have to be unlocked first. The powerups appears as round flying objects during the gameplay. You have to visit store to unlock and upgrade them. Every powerup has five different levels and upgrading these powerups increases the chances of getting them during the run. Few of these powerups will be available to unlock from the start while others requires you to be on a specific level.
Freeze Blast – It appears as white round object and collecting it kills multiple enemies and freezes lava lakes which appears on your screen the instant you pick it up. Five hundred coins are required to unlock it and maxes out at three thousand gold coins.
Comet Shower – You have to be on Level three to unlock this powerup. Picking this powerup will result in comet showers, eventually killing and destroying almost everything. This powerup can be unlocked for one thousand coins.
Giant Black Dragon – This one is quite interesting and graphically attractive too. This powerup will turn your dragon into a mighty and immortal giant dragon for a limited time. Which means you don’t have to be afraid of anything except spiked shield because this giant dragon too can rebound sometimes. It starts at thousand coins and ends at four thousand coins for fifth level.
Lord of the Skies – Collecting this upgrade will turn your dragon into a black one with wings which can spend more time in air than the regular mode. Starts at one thousand.
Money Magnet – It is the most common powerup as it is found in every endless game and attracts all nearby coins towards the collector without any movement. It can be unlocked for eight hundred coins and maximizes at four thousand coins.
Extra Life – If you’re low on health during the round then this powerup can be your saver. It will recharge your health by one heart.
Coin Bomb – You can unlock this once you’re at level four. It will turn all nearby obstacles into coins. Starts at two thousand coins and ends at fifteen thousand.
Other than above mentioned powerups we have got:
Armored Dragon – Normally your dragon will have only one heart (bar) of health but you can increase it to six hearts via spending coins starting at one hundred for first additional heart.
Sword – Princess uses her sword to attack bosses, upgrading the sword will result in greater damage. It too has five upgradable levels starting at two hundred coins.
Revive – It revives your dragon the instant he die without asking for any permission. It can only be used once after which you’ll have to purchase it again for five hundred coins.
This review is based upon 1.0.1 version of Dragon Hills and I noticed a bug in this version that is if you have a revive, and you die and collect Giant Black Dragon at the same instant then both new red dragon and black giant dragon will spawn. The giant black dragon will turn back to another red dragon after his limited time and game will end if any of these two dragons loses his health. Android Users needs to be on at least Android 2.3 (Gingerbread) and for iOS devices iOS 5.1 is minimum required to run Dragon Hills. This games requires a bit moderate processor hence it will lag on low end devices.

For another $1.99 you can get six thousand coin which should be enough to get the basic unlockables. Let’s start off with the gameplay. I have to say here that Rebel Twins did it again. They again changed the definition, remade the term and showed us again how endless gives can be more than just a madman running along a line. The gameplay is intriguing, fast and difficulty doesn’t rises above approachable level. There isn’t any kind of energy system hence there’s nothing stopping you for playing it for hours. The gameplay has various elements which makes sure that you’ll not feel the gameplay repeating itself. There are boss fights and literally it’s the third endless runner, which I know of, contains boss fights and two of them are from Rebel Twins. To get hold on controls is a bit tough, it takes time to perfect your jumps to collect coins and I believe that it is the fun part. Coins aren’t rare but collection is difficult other than this there isn’t anything that is forcing you towards in-app purchases, there are ads which can be removed with any in-app purchase.
The artwork and sound departments are strikingly beautiful and extremely detailed. I was extremely impressed by their Aliens Drive Me Crazy and Dragon Hills is even better!! Rebel Twins has brilliant color and saturation selection mentality, I have hardly seen any game which uses over saturation to give scenes dynamic effects to scene. The timing changes from day to night and again back. Whenever you get any dragon changing powerups, not only the viewing angles changes but whole lighting does! The UI is incredibly designed and, even more, is easy to understand. The transitions between menus and different scenarios are extremely smooth (if the device is powerful enough), you can swipe across the dashboard to explore it. Sound department isn’t any less than artwork. There are background music, one is slow-soft pop while other one is intensifying and appears when you’ve covered a decent distance. Whenever dragon destroys anything or kills a knight you’ll hear funny sounds like ‘awwww, yyaaaayyyy’. Overall it’s the one the few games which isn’t lacking in any of these two departments.
The conclusion is that this game is almost perfect, I’ll seriously enjoyed this game and I’ll recommend this game to anyone. This game would even be more fun if, anyhow, Developer can increase the frequency of coins and decreases the prices of upgrades in the store.
Rating:
General Gameplay: Dragon Hills gets an 8.5/10 here. Those who have read the review wouldn’t disagree with this rating. The geometry of world is randomly generated, new elements are continuously added, bosses are there and what else do you want from not just an endless but from a game? The controlling dragon is a bit challenging but it’s total fun when you get hold of it. The developers can make the gameplay even easier if they can increase the number of possible revivals using coins to more than one.
Artwork: Dragon Hills gets a deserving 9/10. It the best 2D endless runner I’ve seen and Kudos to Rebel Twins for providing amazing artwork in a game which is free and doesn’t forces the user towards in-app purchases. Complete gameplay looks like an interactive animated film with unmatched artwork. Just like previous title they used slow-motion blasts, varying angles to give you a beautiful in-game experience.
Sound and SFX: I’ll give this game another 9/10 here. It’s is extremely rare that you come across a game which is good in both artwork and sound departments. The music experience this game provides isn’t less than any action packed movie’s music system. Every detail you can think of is in the game, you’ll hear trees crushing, rock exploding and to know the rest tryout the game yourself. No doubt a decent soundtrack really makes a game.
Story & Originality: I’ll give this game 7.5/10 here. This princess over a dragon resembles to the robotic dragon mode of jetpack joyride and control too are similar. The execution isn’t less if not better than that of Jetpack Joyride. The story of ‘once a waiting but now a revenging princess’ is humorous and a good addition too.
Addictiveness: Dragon Hills gets another 8.5/10 for the addictiveness. This game stands on par with the best endless titles in this regard. Gameplay never gets repetitive and the duo of artwork and sound will make sure that you don’t get your mind off from this game.
Overall I’ll give Dragon Hills an 8.5/10.
