Hard Time (Prison Sim) is an adventure game created by MDickie, a company known for other games such as Wrestling Revolution, School Days or Flash StuntZ. The game is available on both platforms and it has been downloaded for approximately 10 million times. It has a rating of 4.1 out of 5 on Google Play and 4 stars out of a maximum of 5 on Apple’s App Store. In order to run smooth, the game requires iOS 6.1 or later and for Android devices, a version of at least 2.2.
In this game you take the role of a prisoner that is locked for various reasons and that has to survive the whole sentence or die trying. The game gives you the freedom to do what you want once in the prison but soon you will find out that anarchy rules the correctional facility where you are unlucky to be taken and you will have a hard time surviving.
Hard Time (Prison Sim) doesn’t require a mandatory sign-up and you can’t link any social account with it so if you decide (freely or not) to change your device you will lose all the progression you’ve made. The good news is that the game has an end so you will eventually start from the beginning again. Also, it is worth mentioning that there is a great number of ads in the game that will probably annoy you.
There is no real currency in-game and the real-money purchases are few. For $4.99 you can become in-game VIP and you have a permanent access to all feature with no ads. Also, in order to experience the full game you must have a connection to the internet because in offline mode the game will be limited.

Hard Time Prison Sim is a game with an idea that I’ve been waiting for too long. I always thought that a prison-like game where you must survive or adapt and eventually escape can become popular among players but it seems that no company shared this idea with me. When I saw that Hard Time Prison Sim is finally what I’ve wanted I was very enthusiastic about it. Unfortunately, it wasn’t what I expected because the game is not that good.
First of all I think that the best thing about Hard Time Prison Sim is the fact that you have a lot of freedom (see the joke here?) .You are not required to follow a script and you can do whatever you want for as long as you don’t die. You can become a trader, a bully, a hitman or you can just stay out of everything and wait for the time to pass. Secondly, I like how the characters are giving the impression that they are linked or they know each other even though these event are probably happening randomly. One of the most hilarious things I’ve encountered was the moment when a broadcast announcement from the guards popped-up and told everybody that my previously character in-game was brutally killed in prison and no-one tried to save him. I actually laughed at this. In the end, I think that Hard Time Prison Sim is a game that has a lot of potential but it needs a lot of work – adding some more content, creating a solid plot and improving the gameplay would revitalize a game and make it decent.
The thing that annoys me the most in the game is the number of ads. There are literally ads everywhere. Loading screens, during the game, at the beginning of the game, randomly appearing on your whole screen. This is probably why I can’t have a great experience with a potentially good game. I also don’t like the way my character interacts with the environment – some of the things should stay in put – like the bed or the toilet. Even though I like the fact that there are various items I can use, I really don’t understand why I can obtain most of them in prison. I understand that the game has a satirical note but I think that the developers exaggerated – Swords and TNT? Seriously? Moreover, the quest completion is pretty weird because at least two times I did what the inmates asked me (nicely of course) to do and the quest failed each time – I also got stabbed once because of this.
Overall, I am not sure if I would recommend Hard Time Prison Sim. If you are like me, a fan of the idea of a prison-themed game go ahead and download it. Until we have something better, we stick with this not-too-bad game. Otherwise, you should probably avoid it.
Ratings:
Artwork: Hard Time Prison Sim gets 6 out of 10 for its artwork. The environment matches the theme and I was pleasantly surprised when I saw that some of the items can damage it permanently (TNT for example) – I really didn’t expect that. The character design is nice and there are various models (very few prisoners that are looking the same). The biggest issue the game has is that it’s using one of the first 3D engines and that’s not really modern-looking. The animations are awful starting from the movement of the characters and going up to the way things act when they are used. I really think that the game needs a visual upgrade so it can survive the nowadays mobile games market.
Music & SFX: I give the game a rating of 7 out of 10 at this section. Fortunately, this game’s music matches its theme. The song is great and you feel like you really are in a USA prison (no offence guys). I used the word “song” because in Hard Time Prison Sim you will only hear one and that’s disappointing. I would have liked an entire soundtrack and I’m sure that someone would have created some great tunes about the game. The sound effects are interesting and somehow realistic and even though they are not the best I’ve heard, overall, they are above average.
Story/Originality: Hard Time Prison Sim gets 8 out of 10 at this segment. As I mentioned before, this type of games is my guilty pleasure. The only reason the game doesn’t get a maximum rating is because it lacks a good story. There is a set of reasons why you end up in jail but that is purely random and doesn’t have anything to do with a plot whatsoever. A story would have been awesome. In terms of originality I have no objections. If there are some other games out there about prisons, I never heard of them so they must be bad or really obscure. For the first time in a long time, I can say about a game that is truly authentic – good job Hard Time Prison Sim.
General Gameplay: I give the game a rating of 6 out of 10 for its gameplay. The idea of a tutorial coming in segments from different prisoners that will tell you what and how to do it is not great. It took me a while to learn what every button does and after that a dude with a strange haircut told me the thing I just learned by myself. The controls are strange and sometimes unresponsive, not to mention the way the character interacts with the environment. Also, because of the great number of ads, the game sometimes lags or even crashes. Moreover, I think that the permanent ad from the right corner blocks the view for your character and that is a bad thing.
Addictiveness: Hard Time Prison Sim gets 7 out of 10 at this segment. The game has the potential to be really addictive but at the moment it doesn’t offer too much extra content to do so. The fact that you can escape is an interesting approach and most likely this will intrigue the player but other than that there isn’t anything out of the ordinary. The game doesn’t really have an in-game resource so it is basically impossible to implement a daily reward system. The only items you get are from the ground and you can’t stash them and the character progression is really basic. However, ignoring all of this, the game is addictive by its nature so you might enjoy it.
Overall, Hard Time Prison Sim gets a rating of 6.8 out of 10. The idea is great but unfortunately the implementation is rather bad.
