Wrestling Revolution 3D is a sports game developed by MDickie, a company known for other games such as School Days, Hard Time Prison Sim or Booking Revolution. It is available on both leading platforms and it has been downloaded for approximately 25 million times. The game has a rating of 4.1 out of 5 on Google Play and 4 stars on Apple’s App Store. In order to play the game, Android users are required to use a version of at least 2.2 and Apple devices must have iOS 6.1 or later.
In this game you take the role of a young promising wrestler who wants to impress coaches and general managers so he can get a professional wrestler contract. The idea of being worshipped by millions of fans and to become a superstar is very tempting and you must do anything in your power to achieve it.
Wrestling Revolution 3D doesn’t have any currency whatsoever and it doesn’t run on an energy system of some sort so it’s pretty hard to implement microtransactions in it. However, there are two things you can basically buy with real-money. If you pay $4.99 you get a Pro License which grants you the access to each career in-game and no limitation at the beginning. You can get a Backstage Pass with $4.99 which is a premium pack that allows you to play exhibition matches with changes you’ve made into different rosters (including wrestlers, moves or feuds).
The game doesn’t require a sign-up and you can’t link any social account with it so any eventual progression is lost if you uninstall the application or change your device. I really think that the developers should implement the possibility of saving into cloud because the game can occupy a great deal of time for the player. Also, it is worth mentioning that the game has a lot of ads so you will most likely be annoyed by them if you don’t buy the Pro License.

Wrestling was always a major part of American (and not only) entertainment so it’s not surprising that everybody loves a good wrestling game. Especially when the game is not for mobile devices. Fortunately, Wrestling Revolution 3D is one of the decent wrestling games out there even though it feels outdated, not so user-friendly and it’s developed for the mobile games industry.
I think that what I like the most about Wrestling Revolution 3D is the thing that really stands out – There are a lot of different wrestling moves and you can customize all of them. This adds up to the fact that the character creation is pretty detailed and you can choose a lot of things including the way you taunt or you enter to the thing (everybody wants a fancy entrance). I like the fact that the tutorial is divided into different parts and you can basically exercise what you want and skip what you already know. Moreover, I really like the fact that there is a career in this game and that it really feels like a career. You must perform well (not just only win) and you must entertain the crowds if you want a contract with a decent federation. That brings the realism to a great level. Moreover, if you fail to impress you will be fired and you will lose game – it may seem a bit drastic but personally I like it.
First of all I really don’t like the fact that the game doesn’t have license for real-names and shows. I mean I know is hard to take a WWE license given the fact that they are owned by 2K Games but there are a lot of other rosters that could make the game more interesting. Secondly I find really annoying the fact that the game is full of ads. I understand that it’s the developers’ way of earning money but some more discrete ads would have been better. Call me crazy but another thing that really bothers me is the game’s font. It looks like it’s taken from MS Paint or something. Finally, on a more serious note (I really hate the font), I believe that the gameplay is not that great but I think that this happens because of the mobile devices limitation. A wrestling game should be played with a joystick after all.
Overall, Wrestling Revolution 3D is a game that you’re going to love or hate. If you can go pass the old graphics, rusty gameplay and weird menus I think that you will have a great experience.
Ratings
Artwork: Wrestling Revolution 3D gets 6 out of 10 for its artwork. Even though a game with “3D” in its name suggests a very modern one I don’t really think that Wrestling Revolution 3D can be considered one of them. The character design is pretty good but the rendering is not great. The environment is very static and you can see that the game isn’t fully 3D. The wrestling moves are looking cool and if you close your eyes when wrestlers magically merge with the ropes, aprons or with the ring itself, they are above average. One of the things I like about the artwork is the fact that the wrestlers seem to react to damage – if you hit someone’s leg, he will limp for a bit.
Music & SFX: The game gets a rating of 8 out of 10 at this section. Wrestling Revolution 3D is one of the best games on a mobile device in a long time if we are talking about the music. It suits perfectly with the theme – loud, catchy and challenging. Because of the great music, the wrestling atmosphere is present right from the beginning of the game. Unfortunately, the sound effects are not matching the music’s popularity. They are not the worst I’ve heard but there are some situations where you can feel a discrepancy between the action and the sound and that can become a little annoying at some point.
Story/Originality: Wrestling Revolution 3D gets 8 out of 10 here. It may seem surprising because a wrestling game is not uncommon and we are not talking about WWE but believe me when I say that this game is really solid. The idea of joining different rosters and starting unemployed is great and it replaces successfully the “no WWE means no original game” problem. The game has a lot of additional content and it really doesn’t feel like it was inspired from another one. The developers did a great job in this department.
General Gameplay: The game gets a rating of 7 out of 10 for its gameplay. Don’t get me wrong, Wrestling Revolution 3D is a good game but, as I mentioned before, this type of games is very hard to be ported on a mobile device because of the controls and movement limitation you get. It is very hard to master the controls so the game can easy turn into a smash buttons (in this case touchscreen) fest. The tutorial is nice and well-structured. I like the fact that you can skip or wait for the game to load at the beginning. If you skip, you will have much longer loading screens. I haven’t encountered any major bugs, freezes or crashes so from this point of view the game is great.
Addictiveness: Wrestling Revolution 3D gets 7 out of 10 at this segment. The game is full of additional content (you can participate in different rosters or wrestling tours, you can practice a lot and so on) besides the nice-looking career mode. However, the problem with a wrestling game is that it will become repetitive no matter what. You can’t have daily quests or daily rewards so the only way to keep the player entertained is to have different types of matches. An implementation of a battle royal (a real one) or something like Last Man Standing mode would have helped a lot in my opinion. Also, a multiplayer implementation is something the game really lacks.
Overall, Wrestling Revolution 3D gets a rating of 7.2 out of 10. The game is not first-page material but it’s above average in its niche. If you like wrestling and you don’t want to pay real money for the WWE game, you will probably enjoy this one.
