The gameplay in Happy Jump is fairly straightforward and should be intimately familiar to you if you’ve ever played one of the many endless jumping games. Tilt your device to the left and right to alter the direction your character is moving while they’re flying in the air. Your objective is to go ever higher into the stratosphere by reaching newer and higher platforms. However, once you reach a certain height there is no going back.

There are certain ways to propel your character upwards, the most common method is through use of the platforms as mentioned before. If you are mid-air and you touch coins or fruits you will be propelled higher than you would by merely jumping on platforms, reaching fruits will propel you even higher than reaching coins.

There are two different types of platforms, permanent and temporary platforms, as the names imply one allows you to remain jumping indefinitely while the other only allots you a single solitary jump before it crumbles to pieces and you’re hurled back to earth to suffer an untimely demise. Always keep your attention on the next platform, temporary platforms are strategically placed in areas where they could be very useful to you, so be careful where you land. There are slight differences between temporary and permanent platforms, temporary platforms have visible cracks running throughout and there color is less vibrant than that of the permanent platform.

As with any complete story this one too has an antagonist, in this case it’s a flying insect which I can only assume is meant to be either a bee or a fly, both which have a taste for deliciously sweet dessert. Any contact with this flying nuisance will mean the end of your vertical pursuits, causing your jelly buddy to turn upside down and fall to an untimely splatter.

Avoid these pesky insects by tilting your phone away from them or by capturing fruit which provides you with insect immunity for a short duration of time.

Happy Jump Review

Happy Jump really hit the needs of its target demographic on the head, while also making itself accessible to adults reminiscent of a much simpler time. The bright colors can be a bit nauseating unless you’re used to that sort of bubble gum Disney Channel aesthetic, but for children, especially younger ones between the ages of 4-10, I could see this as being wildly popular.

The layout and controls are extremely simple and the characters are beyond adorable. However, keep in mind it’s much easier to play this on phones rather than tablets due to the fact that you will be tilting left and right a lot, on a tablet this could get become a test of endurance trying to swivel that device back and forth for what could be hours at a time.

Things weren’t all lollipops and rainbows though, I wasn’t surprised that the higher I got the harder things got but it seems that bees became disproportionately more annoying as I got higher up in the levels. This coupled with the fact that boosts and shields were quite hardtop come by made for a generally frustrating experience until my coins were adequate enough to cope with the bee problem.

Creativity wasn’t really a factor here, if it excelled in anything it was the fact that they took Doodle Jump and Mega Jump and made them extremely cute.  Still gameplay was smooth and uninterrupted, I’ve yet to experience any glitches even after many game sessions.

Happy Jump is very addicting even for adults, and it’s upbeat and generally just a fun game all around.
