Badland Tips & Cheats for All Levels

Badland is a Platform-Adventure game developed by Frogmind which is a debutant company on the market but because of the game’s success is already considered a Top Developer on Google Play. Speaking of Google Play, the game is available on both Android and Apple and it has been downloaded for more than 30 million times and has won several prizes. It has a rating of 4.5 out of 5 on Google Play and it’s free and a maximum rating of 5 stars on Apple’s App Store having the price of $3.99. In order to run at normal parameters, the game requires an Android version of at least 2.3.3 or, for Apple users, iOS 7.0 or later.

In the game you take the role of a weird-looking forest dweller who is required to find out what’s going on with its natural habitat. While exploring, the character will discover weird and complex traps and mechanisms designed for God knows what and that for some reason seems to target exactly this little fellow.

The game doesn’t require a mandatory sign-up but any login from a Google+ Account (android users are required to have Google Play Services installed anyway) will allow the game to be saved in the cloud. This will lead to no lost progress if the device is changed or for some reason the application is uninstalled and then reinstalled again. By linking your Google+ account, you will get access to all over the world leaderboards and achievements.

Badland doesn’t have a proper microtransactions shop but you can get a Premium version of the game for $5.99 which unlocks all the single player and multiplayer levels and also make the game ad-free. If you are truly a fan, you can check the official merchandise shop and get a T-Shirt, a mug or even a mobile phone case with designs and layouts inspired from the game.

Cheats & Tips for Badland

  • Speed is the key and the core of the game. Use the terrain in your advantage when possible and try to avoid the slowing power-ups – the reason is pretty obvious.

  • The speed power-ups will grant you a higher speed, that’s true, but at the same time, you will be penalized more if you hit obstacles because the game ‘runs’ faster too.
  • The game doesn’t start until you make a move so if it happens to lose a round and start from a checkpoint, search the surroundings to solve the puzzle that causes you problems and then proceed to action.
  • If you care about leaderboards and achievements, try to keep alive as many clones as possible.

  • If you miss level-oriented achievements and you want to do them anyway, you can always replay a level to make sure you grab that missing piece.
  • Try to pick all the neutral clones you can because they can later save your life. Also, that’s why they are probably there – so you can sacrifice them in order to keep going.
  • Unless it’s falling from above, the terrain will not usually try to harm you so smashing your head into stuff by mistake now and then won’t be a big problem. Try to avoid them though.
  • When there seems to be a dead end ahead, probably you need to move some of the obstacles to proceed further. In this case, ignore the above rule and smash your head in anything you can.

Badland Review

Probably the best choice besides a casual title for a mobile device game is an action-adventure game. Usually it isn’t hard to play and it doesn’t matter whether you constantly play on your mobile device or not. Because it meets all this requirements, the first impression of Badland is that you are going to spend a lot of time in the bizarre universe it has to offer.

The thing I appreciate the most about Badland is perhaps the novelty mash-up of a LIMBO-type game with a Flappy Bird-type game. It seems odd but it worked because the resulted game is something interesting. You have the theme and the artwork of LIMBO and the difficulty and annoyance of Flappy Birds. (and the nonsense urge of playing the game more and more) The atmosphere of it is pretty great and it reminds me, for unknown reasons, of a cold rainy day. I also like a lot the mechanics of Badland – during your playtime you will be required to play with more than one “character” and you may be required to sacrifice some of them for the greater good – you surviving.

Moreover, you can be put in a situation where you can’t pass some obstacles because your character is too…chubby or it will disappear because he is smaller than a particle. Because of this ingenious mechanics, you can’t know for sure what is coming next. I think that having the possibility of paying real money to unlock levels is smart. Not entirely fair but smart. Another thing I appreciate is the achievement system which has an unexpected complexity and can be really challenging.

There are a few things about Badland that I don’t like or I would change if I would have the possibility. First of all, I believe that the game needs some changes in the multiplayer implementation – co-op and multiplayer both. At the moment, there isn’t any clear instructions on how to play or what are the advantages of going online. Also, it seems like you are doomed to stay in queue forever if you want to play it with someone you don’t know. Secondly, I am not sure that the ads system implemented in Badland is the best choice. You will notice an ad-free game and you will be happy…until you are required to watch a significant number of ads or buy the “full version no ads” version in order to pass a level.

Being required to watch advertising stuff so you can unlock the next stage is not better than having small discrete ads the entire time of the gameplay.  Finally, the game has an issue that will certainly annoy the players who require glasses. The orbs that make your character bigger or smaller and all the other power-ups are hard to be seen distinguished because of the similar design. I know that this is an intentionally feature but it can become a nuisance. Choosing “friendlier” colors shouldn’t be hard and would easily solve the problem.

Overall, Badland is a game I would most likely recommend. It has its issues, that’s true, but all put together is a pretty solid game that has the potential to provide a nice experience.

Ratings

Artwork: Badland gets a rating of 8 out of 10 for its artwork. As I said before, the game’s design is very artistic and focuses on abstraction, shadows and on the player’s imagination. I personally like the idea but it’s not the first time I’ve seen it because the concept was borrowed from Limbo (as far as I know). Because anything about the game is focused on shadows, the theme is rather dark and spooky. Talking about character design would be worthless because of the same reason above but I must give a “shout-out” for the interesting environment – it hypnotizes you.

Music & SFX: I give Badland a rating of 7 out of 10 at this section. When a game is focused on the art, I have high expectations from the music “department” of it. Unfortunately, Badland developers can’t brag much about the music nor the sound effects. The good thing is that the music matches with the theme and with the help of the sound effects, it creates an even creepier atmosphere. The bad thing is that it is very repetitive and doesn’t feel like a proper background music. A lot of work could have been done in order to make the game more interesting.

Story/Originality: The game gets a rating of 7 out of 10 at this segment. When I first heard of Badland I misjudged and I instantly thought that I am required to review a Limbo-copy. I was wrong because there is no doubt that the game is inspired from Limbo but it has a lot of own original elements. The story behind the game has the potential to be interesting but only if you have a big imagination because there isn’t any character background story and there aren’t any current story hints either. I know that this is a common thing (you make your own story or something like that) but because of the game’s genre I want a proper story!

General Gameplay: I give Badland a rating of 8 out of 10 for its gameplay. There isn’t a tutorial in the game and you don’t need it anyway. Badland has a straight forward gameplay and very easy (in theory) controls. You continuously tap to get height and you stop tapping to lose height. However, the game can turn to be overwhelming because there are no further instructions. You need to find out all by yourself (or by reading the tips and tricks of this review) how to survive in a not so pleasant environment (it’s called Badland for a reason).

Addictiveness: Badland gets a rating of 8 out of 10 for its addictiveness. The game has almost 200 Mb and that’s mostly content because we already talked about the fact that the graphics and the music are not that complex. You have a lot of stages to get through and a lot of time will be required to do so. The game lacks a character progression or a daily reward but there is a very complex achievement system and the fact that your performance can be rated helps with the addictiveness. Unfortunately, the longevity of the game can really backfire and a significant part of the players will most likely give up on the game before finishing it.

Overall, Badland gets a rating of 7.6 out of 10. The game is definitely something worth checking out because there aren’t many of this kind of platformers on the market. Be aware though, it’s difficult to play it.
