Being the last Commando is not an easy task, as you are surrounded by a swarm of hostiles, and there are just more to come. The only option is to fight to the last breath and try to do the most good you can on the frontlines. Be it the help for citizens or to take out a dangerous target, you must do it, otherwise your soldiers have fallen for nothing!
To stand your ground, you will need exceptional skills in battle. The gameplay deters to this, as you are set behind a wall on each level, from where you can decide to aim out by tapping and moving your finger on the screen, and shoot with the button on the right. You can even decide to rush with the arrows on screen to another cover to the left or right, or duck down behind the current one. For even more mid-combat choices, there is an option to swap between two equipped weapons. You will no doubt also run out of ammo during levels, so one of the covers always has an ammo box, which you have to rush back to whenever you need ammo.
Enemies in Frontline Commando will often move around the battlefield, hide behind covers and sometimes even throw grenades or shoot rocket propelled grenades (RPGs) at your location, which you can dodge by rushing to another cover. Explosions and bullets can also destroy parts of the map, such as covers or walls, so your cover can be fully blown after a while, but you can also destroy the enemies’ blockades and covers.
Soon after learning the basics in the tutorial, you will be sent to the mission map. From here you can choose to go to any of the missions highlighted by various symbols on the map. For example there are Elimination missions, where all you have to do is eliminate all targets on the level to win, while Rescue missions work in the same way, except that there might be citizens nearby, who you should in no way hurt, otherwise the mission fails. Then there are Sharpshooter missions, where there is a high sniper activity, and the use of a sniper rifle is definitely a must. As you progress in the game, even more mission modes are unlocked.
A mission type of Frontline Commando that we should talk about in detail is the One Man Army, which is always apparent on the map. This is a survival or arena type of mission, where you have to go up against 50 waves of enemies, with only one life. After every 5 wave, the terrain is repaired and progress is saved. Your goal is to set a highscore by staying alive as long as possible, while score multipliers can be gotten by headshots, shooting moving targets and getting supply drops. There are 4 levels you can play in this mission, each harder than the preceding, but they first need to be unlocked by reaching a specific level for each.
Being the only Commando left on the frontlines, you also need weapon supplies to survive and do your job. For this reason there is a Store in the game, where you can purchase from a great arsenal. Weapons include things like the Bloodshot shotgun, the HIMAX 100 rifle, the Steelette sniper rifle, the Sweetsweeper machine gun or the Hammerbomb grenade launcher. Some of the weapons cost war cash, while some can be bought for glu credits, the premium currency.
The Store even stocks items such as Medkits, Airstrikes and Armor. Medkits when used fully restore your health on any level, while Airstrikes destroy all opposition currently on screen. Armor on the other hand is used to make you harder to kill. These all cost glu credits to buy.
While war cash is awarded for missions, glu credits need to be bought with real money, so the game has numerous packs available for this cause. There are still war cash packs as well though. The prices start from $3.99 for 100 glu credits or 5000 war cash, while the most expensive ones costs $39.99 for 2000 credits or 100,000 war cash. There is also an option to download sponsored apps for free glu credits.
Other than in-app purchases, the game even has some full screen ads scattered about, which appear at random times after completed missions, or after browsing the menus. Buying one of the glu credits in-app purchases disables all ads.
Cheats for Frontline Commando is a popular thing people look for, and I can see why. Battles can become pretty tough after you get cornered under your cover. Popping up behind it can be dangerous and too many enemies can mean the end of a mission. For this reason cheats can be a helpful aid to preserve your will to play on. So let me tell you a few tips and tricks to make the best out of your gaming experience!
Whether you though so or not, Frontline Commando has cheats built in, in the form of Medkits, Armor and Airstrikes. Medkits will fully restore your health anytime you need, so you don’t have to be afraid to get out of your cover. You can also consider buying armor, which will reduce a lot of damage for a while, making encounters much easier than they would normally be. Airstrikes are the real deal though, as they kill all enemies on the screen with only a button press. This can be life saving at times, so don’t forget to use it when you see no other way out!
As for even more serious cheats, some of the weapons in the Store have autoaim built in, which mean you will only have to shoot, the weapon will do the aiming for you. This makes firefights pretty simple and as easy as cake. If you can get your hands on these weapons, you will no doubt be a champion in this game.
As for how to get more glu credits, you will have to turn to external cheats for that one, as Glu doesn’t really like to give you too many options to get a great amount of credits. You can try to download sponsored apps for credits, but that’s the only option the game presents.
Frontline Commando has a promising story backing it up, with a protagonist in a tricky situation. How well does it manage to play off of this though? Well, let me tell you my experience!
I really got excited when I first launched the game, as the story got me interested. I expected a somewhat story driven game, but sadly as it turns out, it doesn’t matter that much in this game. Missions are related to the situation of being stranded in the enemy frontlines, but it all really turns into a mass shooting, instead of a well thought out revenge.
Anyway, the gameplay itself is pretty enjoyable though, as the gunplay is fairly good and balanced with all the weapons I tried, which were the first two shotguns, rifles and sniper rifles. The shotgun can be a very effective weapon, but it seemed to be the least useful in most situations, as most enemies never walked up to my face. The rifle was much better for this reason, and the sniper was great for long range takeouts. It also took only one hit most of the time to kill most enemies with it, except when randomly they took two bullets somehow.
The enemy AI was surprisingly good, as they often hid behind cover and moved around the battlefield, making combat much harder than usual in similar games. Grenades and RPGs were also somewhat annoying, as I had to keep dodging from cover to cover, but it honestly just made it much more fun.
Progressing by level up seemed to be somewhat pointless though as far as I noticed, and buying new weapons was more important than gaining levels. As weapons can’t be upgraded, I was required to get new ones after a while, as either the old guns’ power has fallen behind, or enemies became tougher as I progressed from mission to mission.
Something I was a bit disappointed about is how empty the game felt. There are really only the missions and the One Man Army repeatable survival mission to play, and there are barely any other activities to do. The Store is the only other place you can go to, which is a little sad. I wanted some side activities like more ways to earn war cash or glu credits, but I guess it’s not the end of the world.
In the end, Frontline Commando is a solid cover based shooter, but there could be improvements made for sure. As there are sequels out already, I doubt there will be many changes though. It’s still worth to give it a try, as the battles can be pretty enjoyable.
Ratings
Artwork: The artwork of Frontline Commando gets a 6/10. This game is not a new release and it really shows. It’s not a bad looking game, but it’s time has really passed its visuals. The environmental destruction can be impressive though, even after all this time.
Music & SFX: I give the music and the SFX a 8/10. The music is quiet for most of the game, with a subtle, almost sneaky feeling to it. It really makes you feel like someone being hunted in enemy territory. The SFX are really awesome, as most guns sound realistic and enemy voices are also immersive and fit the environment laid out in the levels.
Story & Originality: As for the story and originality, the game gets a 7/10. The game is original enough with its cover based shooting mechanics and the rush from cover to cover system, but I wish they would have took the story further somehow, instead of only focusing on the firefights.
General Gameplay: The general gameplay of Frontline Commando gets an 8/10. The gunplay and the cover based combat is fun, as well as the enemy AI is smart enough to make battles exciting. Maybe there could be more activities in the game though, so players won’t get tired of all the fighting going on, but other than that, I have no real complaints.
Addictiveness: I give the addictiveness of the game a 6/10. This is a title that can get people hooked with its addicting gameplay mechanics, but they might get tired of the repeating levels and mission types after a while. Some new features could help, but it’s still a good game to play for a while. In the long run, there is the sequel to look for.
Overall Score: 7/10.
