About Charm King

Charm King is very similar in gameplay design to most well known match-3 games such as Bejeweled or Candy Crush. There is a difference though, which lies in the bright fantasy themed aesthetics and the more laid back match combos.

The gameplay is just as you would expect: match 3 or more of the same colored charms to collect them and gain points. Most levels have goals, such as to gather a set amount of different colored charms. Reaching these goals is your main concern on most levels, getting a higher score only changes your star rating for each level. Failing a level also costs you one life of five, but they recharge over time.

Now, I mentioned more laid back match combos, but what does that mean? It means that matching 4 or more of the same colored charms doesn’t cause explosions or destroy whole lines of charms, as it is the tradition in most match-3 games. Instead creating matches like that enchant other charms near them. The better the match, the more charms that will get enchanted close by. Enchanted charms are worth double the score and they will be immediately collected when they become enchanted for a second time.

The levels in Charm King can also be reached in a similar fashion to other games in the genre, which means you travel through a map, going from level to level. In this game the map is of a beautiful fantasy kingdom full of forests, icy mountains, treasure caverns, clay cities, shipyards and many more scenes. Each change in scenery indicates a different region of the kingdom and also new gameplay mechanics introduced.

During the first region’s swampy lands, you will have levels where you will have to light torches by making matches near them, or levels where you have to make dirt disappear from the board by making matches near them. The second region on the other hand introduces bubbles, which have to be popped by matching the charms inside them. As you travel further and further each new region will unlock more mechanics like these, keeping the gameplay fresh and exciting, while sometimes even combining multiple.

After passing level 27, Charm King also unlocks its daily quests feature. Daily quests can be anything like completing a  previous level a second time or collecting 400 yellow charms, while there will always be a quest for completing the next level in your journey. Each of these quests award the player with cherries. 10 cherries can be exchanged for a Bitty Box, or 20 cherries for a Fancy Box. These gift boxes can contain various pre-game and ingame powerups or the premium currency of the game: gold. Getting cherries is also possible by harvesting your cherry tree, which is a tree that grows one free cherry per hour.

Now, powerups definitely sound interesting as well, but they are not your usual ones. These powerups are used before a level to gain 3 more moves, enchant all charms immediately or collect 5 random charms with arrows when the level starts. The ingame powerups on the other hand can collect all charms of a chosen color or shoot down one chosen by you. There are limited amounts of these available and you can either spend your gold on buying more or win them from gift boxes, but they are not required to finish any levels.

Gold is very scarce in Charm King, so you either have to win them from gift boxes or purchase them with real money. The cheapest package of gold costs $1.99 for 16, while the most expensive one costs $49.99 for 500 gold.

The game also has some interaction with Facebook, so if you login you can compete with your friends, see where they are on the map and beat their scores. You can also ask them for extra lives, if you were to run out of them.

Cheats & Tips for Charm King

Charm King might not be the most challenging game ever, but there are still levels that can make you hold your head in despair. Do you wish to make these easier using cheats, or do you hope to get some more gold with cheats? Maybe you just want some tips and tricks? I’m here to tell you some, so read on!

If your gold pile seems to be lacking, then take a look at your quest log. You can get cherries by completing these daily quests, just as finishing each new level will award you with a cherry. Once you have 20 of them, you can exchange those for a Fancy Box, which can even include gold! Not only that, but some quests outright just give out gold as a reward, so it’s definitely the best to check on it as often as you can.

As for when you get stuck on a level, if you have any powerups, consider using those to make the level much easier. Immediately turning all charms to enchanted ones can yield better scores early on, or get 3 extra moves if that’s just what you need to finish the level. If you run out of these powerups, then open one of the gift boxes for a chance to get more.

Losing all your hearts can also be annoying, since you can’t continue playing until there is at least one left. You can connect to Facebook and ask friends for hearts to bypass this, or spend some of your gold to refill them.

Charm King Review

I always loved match-3 games and have played numerous ones over the years, but Charm King is definitely in my top 3 so far. Why is that so, you might ask?

Firstly, the game’s difficulty is just perfect: it’s not too hard and not too easy either. Most levels I found to be somewhat simple to complete, but I had to think about my moves to do so. If you just mindlessly match charms, then you won’t get anywhere, but lose the level.

On the other hand there were levels which were challenging enough that I had to retry them three or more times, but it was a rare occurence. While other match-3 games’ difficulty can feel artificial, Charm King manages to set it where it feels fair.

I also really enjoyed the new mechanics that constantly got introduced as I got further into the game and reached new regions. It truly helped keep the game fresh. I can’t wait to continue and find out what new ones are still ahead of me!

Another great feature of the game is the daily quests and the cherries as currency. It’s not too hard to get cherries, especially since each completed new level will guarantee one, and the cherry tree produces free ones. Opening the gift boxes is exciting, while getting those free powerups and gold is always welcome.

Probably the only negative thing I found about the game were the powerups. Well, not the powerups themselves, but how pointless it is to pay real money for them. You can spend $1.99 for 16 gold, which translates into 2 charges of an arrow volley powerup, which is not even too useful with its random arrows taking down random charms. Thankfully any level can be completed without powerups, so you are not forced to use them.

Overall, I really liked Charm King and will definitely keep playing more. This game is a perfect fit for mobile phones, with its simple, yet tought provoking, laid back gameplay and the feeling of progression with the daily quests. The match combos don’t cause explosions, but if you want something simple yet fun, then this game is for you!

Artwork: The artwork of Charm King gets a 9/10. I personally really liked the visual style of this game. It’s a happy, colorful and clean design, which fits the theme really well. The map is also very imaginative, as each region is very distinct from others. It’s even fun to just look through future regions of levels, as they are so pretty.

Music & SFX: As for the music and SFX, the game deserves an 8/10. Great fantasy themed music fills this title both in the menus and during levels, which makes you feel safe and welcome in these magical lands. The SFX are even better though, as the matching effect sounds are perfect, just as the little gallopping on the map is a nice touch.

Story & Originality: The story and originality of Charm King gets a 7/10 from me. We all have seen countless match-3 games before, so innovating is very hard in this genre. Charm King decides to hold back a little and create a more laid back gameplay style, instead of pulling off crazy match combos like most similar games.

General Gameplay: I give the general gameplay a 9/10. Most levels in the game are not too hard to complete, even without using any type of powerups, which helps players with advancing at a constant pace. The quest and gift box system is also a great way to keep players motivated. Then there is the fact that each new region introduces new gameplay elements to keep things fresh, which makes an all around awesome game.

Addictiveness: The addictiveness of this title gets a 9/10 rating as well. The game features 415 levels, which will take a really long time to complete even for an avid match-3 player. Combine this with the daily quests system, the joy of opening gift boxes and you have got yourself an addiction!
