Released on June 24th 2013. Iron Force is a military action game developed by Chillingo, a subsidiary of Electronic Arts, for Android and iOS devices. It is rated as appropriate for teens and older on the Google Play Store and is recommended for users aged 17+ on the iTunes App Store, due to its graphic nature.
Iron force boasts millions of downloads on the iTunes App Store and the Google Play Store Respectively. Reviews have been generally positive on those app stores garnering a 5.0 and a 4.3 on the iTunes App Store and the Google Play Store respectively. Iron Force is free to download and it does offer in app purchases ranging from a modest $1.99 to a hefty $99.99.
You will need an internet connection while playing Iron Force since the title is entirely online based. The cool thing is all the people you play with are actually people and not computer drones, however, you do have the option of playing against the in game AI for training purposes.
For the most part you will play in either free for all mode or legion mode. In free for all the other 5 players on the battlefield are your enemies, in legion mode you’re teamed up in two teams of 3 players each. You can create your own legion, thus making you the commander, or you can join randomly assigned legions.
Gameplay is fairly customary, utilizing a virtual thumb pad on the left and fire controls on the right side. Further advanced controls can be unlocked when the corresponding equipment purchased from the in app store.
When you first download Iron Force you have to wait for all of the updates to download, after that you are guided through an in depth tutorial. The tutorial will introduce you to the basic mechanics of Iron Force. Once you complete the tutorial there’s a “warming up” stage where you get acclimated to real live gameplay against other gamers. This is a natural stage for any MMO so don’t get too disgruntled with your less than stellar performance, stick it out and see how far you can go.

There is a considerable amount of strategy involved in Iron Force, as well as the pure adrenaline rush of all out tank wars. The first obstacle to overcome is the game time restriction imposed in the form of “fuel”. Each time you enter a game session your tank requires fuel, once your fuel has been depleted you must wait for it to be refilled. Of course you can use the premium currency, diamonds, to quickly refill your fuel tank or simply wait it out.
Making good use of your time is a great way to maximize your fuel usage. Play as much as you can in one sitting and let your fuel recharge while you can’t play, for example play during your lunch break and while you’re in class or work let your fuel replenish itself. The game doesn’t have to open and you don’t have to be connected to the internet for fuel to replenish itself. While waiting for fuel to refill, upgrade your tank to ensure you’re in proper fighting form, it can be easy to want to run straight into battle to redeem yourself after a loss, but why not work on the things that caused you to lose in the first place before repeating the same mistake and wasting fuel simultaneously?
In the free for all game mode, do not hesitate to take out a player you find with low health just because they are already engaged in battle with another player. Take advantage of every opportunity you have and show no mercy on the battlefield because trust me, none will be shown towards you.
The battlefields aren’t wide open plains for a reason, walls and buildings are there to strategically act as barriers for defense and for evading attack. If you notice a player is facing away from you, sneak up from behind them using a building as a shield and blow them to pieces. Also, use walls to protect your rear, it’s easy to get so focused on attacking one player that you completely lose sight of the one right behind you filling your hull with shells.
Perhaps the best way to maximize the defensive strategy is to learn the maps. Play a map over and over until you know it inside and out, considering there are only five maps all it takes is a little attention to master them in short succession.
Although free for all is great, team fights are where you can get the most out of Iron Force. Create or join a legion with friends or people you’ve met online. Each legion can have up to 50 members, make sure to join a legion, or recruit members depending on your roll, who are specialized in various aspects of gameplay. An entire legion comprised of only defensively minded players isn’t nearly as versatile as a team where one player is specialized in speed, one is specialized in attack, one is specialized in defense, and so on.
Your legion will be your go to squad in the game so make sure to pick great players who play frequently, nothings worse than taking the time out to recruit a bunch of great players if none of them even log in!
There are two strategies for upgrading, you can either specialize in a particular facet of the game, or you can strive to be an all-around player. Trying to be great at everything means you will likely be mediocre for a really long time, we’re all familiar with the adage “a jack of all trades is a master of none”, in Iron Force the saying is just as true. It’s best to specialize in a particular realm and once you are a master in that realm then devote time to improving your other qualities. This way you will be a much more attractive recruit for elite legions, and you will upgrade much more quickly.
One of the great things about Iron Force is that in app purchases are not required to progress in the game and to enjoy it, however, if you’re getting impatient with the pace of the game purchase diamonds from the in app store. Diamonds not only support the developer but they also allow you to progress much more quickly than if you were to not spend any money at all. Diamonds can speed up order times, fuel times, and they can be used to purchase many great upgrades that would otherwise require long periods of gameplay.
The game is much more rewarding once you get past the initial learning curve and the lengthy tutorial, there can also be a large discrepancy between fighting scenarios. In one match you may find yourself fighting amongst equals, but many times, especially if you’re still a novice, it’s easy to get outmatched by seasoned players who have either been there since the beginning or they bought their way to success. There definitely needs to be a reassessment of how individuals are chosen for matches, low level players should be pitted against low level players.
When playing on Wi-Fi I encountered only a few issues with lagging and lost connections, however, when switching to my mobile connection there were considerably more issues especially whilst moving, I would highly suggest only playing on a strong network unless you enjoy losing game progress.
Ratings
Artwork 7.5/10
The in game physics seemed fairly accurate in regards to reload speed and the speed of the tank. The graphics are vivid and the animation is smooth. My only issue was that the graphics did pale when compared to the similar mobile tank battle game, World of Tanks: Blitz, they were inferior in quality.
Sound/ Special Effects 7.0/10
Most of the in game sounds are from the tanks themselves, either their movements, the sound of reloading, or the shooting mechanism. There is a tune which plays during the home screen but that’s about it for audio. I liked that there weren’t any soundtracks playing during the gameplay as this takes away from the immersive aspect for me.
Story/Originality 3.0/10
As a tank battling game Iron Force is neither a pioneer in its genre, nor is it even the most popular game in its genre. The legions aspect was interesting but otherwise, nothing new to see here folks.
Gameplay 7/10
The interface for the gameplay was really straight forward, so was the process for upgrading the tanks. I did have some issue with the pace of Iron Force, things could’ve definitely been sped up, but this is merely a matter of personal preference, some people enjoy spending months or years to progress a game as it makes it more “realistic”. With the exception of the frequent downtimes, and the need to refuel, gameplay was generally very pleasant provided you have patience or money.
Addictiveness 5.0/10
Generally speaking I wouldn’t consider this an “addictive” game per se, unless you are especially enthused about tank battle games in which case this would be a very addicting venture indeed. However, if you do give this game a try, and you stick it out through the rough early stages, it’s definitely one that will grow on you in time. In the long run, yes I can see Iron Force being a rewarding experience, but in terms of addictiveness like “I can’t put this down” from the start addictive, this is just not one of those games.
