Inotia 4 in its visual style is somewhat reminiscent of retro RPGs, such Chrono Trigger. Its gameplay is also somewhat close to that, but it still presents something new, while keeping the well known and loved art.
As most expansive RPGs, this game also starts with character creation. You have 6 different classes to choose from: Black Knight, Assassin, Warlock, Priest, Ranger and Warrior. Black Knights are tanky and hit big, while Assassins rely on speed and precision in their attacks. Warlocks are users of witchcraft and destruction magic, but Priests are powerful fighters with healing powers. Rangers are trained users of the bow and arrow, capable of taking down anyone from afar, while Warriors are simply looking to slaughter using their swords.
Each class in Inotia 4 has 15 different skills, some of which are activatable powers such as the powerful Dark Strike of the Black Knight, or summoning the Pawn of Hell by the Warlock. Other skills are passives, which grant bonuses continously to your character both in and outside of combat.
As you gain levels in the game by completing quests and killing enemies, you will level up and gain skill points to spend on either unlock new skills or upgrade previous ones. You also get stat points as you reach new levels, which can be added to your STR, DEX, VIT, INT and MEN statistics. Each class has different main stats, so where you should place your points depends entirely on your class.
Now, the gameplay doesn’t end in statistics and numbers, that would be really boring. Instead the gameplay has two different aspects: combat and story. The controls in the game are very simple, you move your character using a D-pad, while attacking and interacting with things is done by the big yellow button on the right side of the screen. Near this button are your skills shown, which you can activate during combat. Combat is done in real time in Inotia 4, so whenever you go close to an enemy, it will probably attack you. You can outrun enemies as well, but that will cause you to lose possible experience.
Fighting enemies is also beneficial in the way that each killed foe has a chance to drop some loot. Loot can be anything like some copper or silver, crafting components and health potions or you might become lucky and find magical armor and weapons! All loot can be useful though, as potions are really useful during battles, copper and silver can be spent at vendors, and crafting components can be turned into various items in cities.
Combat is a huge part of the game, but what would it be without a story? The player takes control of Kiyan, the Shadow Tribe’s virtuoso, one of their best assassins. Kiyan is ruthless and can kill anyone without remorse. He is reducing the numbers of soldiers in the forests and caves near to his tribe’s home, when fate decides to put this unshakable killer to the test and crosses his roads with Eara, the Channel of Light. Will this influential girl change Kiyan’s outlook on life and bring him to the light, or will he stay in the dark? I won’t tell you more, as the game is heavily reliant on the story, so go and check it out yourself!
To help you progress through the over 400 different maps in the story, the game also has countless mercenaries to hire for help. Mercenaries can be from any class, but they also have their own 20 unique mercenary skills, bringing some surprise to the battlefield. Move through dark forests, dungeons, deserts and snowfields with your hired team to reach your goals!
Along with the main story of darkness and light, Inotia 4 also has numerous subquests available to take on from the NPCs in the world, giving you a look into mysteries of the Inotian continent and its people.
After you completed the main story, you can also begin a new adventure in the Infinite Dungeon. 5 different memory layers are present in this dungeon, which will send you back to memories of battles from the main story. These battles will be more tough than they were at first, so be prepared for a challenge!
The game also has some microtransactions in the form of gold or gems, which can then be exchanged for helpful items. The cheapest pack of gems costs $0.99 for 20 pieces, while the most expensive one costs $99.99 for 3000 gems. Gold on the other hand costs $0.99 for 2 pieces, or you can pay $19.99 for 60. Since 100 copper is 1 silver, and 100 silver is 1 gold, this can be a huge amount to get instantly. Some infrequent ads which appear in the game’s menus can also be disabled by paying $0.99.
Gems can be exchanged for stat boost scrolls, experience amplification scrolls, weapon and armor enhance scrolls, stat resets, infinite inventory slots, various elixirs and powerful mercenary summoners. If you don’t even want to keep looking for armor and weapons in the game, you can also swap some of your gems for very powerful armor or weapons for each class.
Enemies in Inotia 4 usually don’t pose too much of a challenge in one on one combat, but if you get overrun by multiple foes that might be hard to survive. Unlocking some early firepower with gems can make your fights much easier. Whether you want to hear about cheats to get more gems or some tips and tricks, just read on for more!
As a first tip, you should never forget to save in this game. I found myself dying in a cave and only just when I died realized that I forgot to save. I had to replay a good chunk of the story for a second time, which was really annoying, but my fault. You can also only have one save per character, so you won’t be able to return to earlier saves.
As general advice, when leveling up you should keep adding stat points to your two main attributes, to make your character as powerful as possible. You can know your main attributes by checking which ones have the most points at level 1. As for leveling skills, you don’t have much of a choice, because most skills are limited either by level or skill points.
As for a trick, if you want to get through a map quickly, then ignore any enemies and just run past them. You won’t get any experience for them, but passing tough enemies or just saving time by not fighting them can be helpful, especially since the game is very long and you might get tired of killing low level bats or wolves after a while.
In case you find yourself low on currency and don’t want to spend money on the game, then consider going to the merchants in any of the game’s cities. They will have items for sale and will buy your unwanted items. Also try out the Fusion Machines to create new items by smelting old ones.
Inotia 4 is very much your usual RPG, I have no doubt about that after playing through the first few main story missions. The story in the game is presented by dialogue mostly, but interacting with things in the world might also reveal some clues. I generally liked what I have seen during my gameplay, as they kept the excitement levels high even from the start. I also enjoyed how my Black Knight character, Kiyan is part of an “evil tribe”, instead of being a purely positive hero.
Before talking about the gameplay, I must say while I’m generally not a huge fan of retro graphics, this game managed to pull off the pixely artwork in a great way. The designs of the maps were also pretty good, at least for what I have seen so far. There are over 400 maps to see, so this is definitely an expansive game.
The gameplay also reminded me of typical fantasy RPGs. The controls were pretty simple and I had no troubles with it at all. The only thing that’s a little weird is that characters can’t move diagonally. This sometimes makes it hard to reach things without too many button presses, but it haven’t actually annoyed me too much.
Combat itself is also very simple, as pressing the interact button next to enemies instantly attacks them and Kiyan keeps on slashing until either the enemy or he dies. You can stop combat though by trying to run away, but I found it pretty hard when multiple enemies cornered me. Basically the only way to not get murdered is to try and fight one or two foes at the same time.
The leveling system is basic, but skills are actually really interesting. I liked the variety of the 15 skills per class. I tried out both the Black Knight and the Warlock and they fought in a highly different way. I think I liked the Warlock with it’s summoning and destruction spells more, but the Black Knight was so tanky that I never died with it.
Overall, Inotia 4 is a very solid roleplaying game, with a lot of familiar systems and mechanics, yet with a unique story. I recommend you give a go to this title, if you can afford to spend time with heavily story driven games!
Ratings
Artwork: I give the artwork of Inotia 4 a 8/10. Many games attempt a nostalgic design decision in their artwork, but not all can pull it off. Inotia 4 is one of the few that actually manages to work it out well. Characters, effects and the maps actually look good and put together in a way that you feel like you are part of a huge fantasy world.
Music & SFX: The music and SFX of the game gets a 5/10. I personally found the music not too exciting or memorable. It’s varied enough that each part of the game world has different background music, but the tracks themselves are somewhat mediocre. The SFX are few and barely noticeable as well. It’s a shame, as music and sounds can make the mood of a game.
Story & Originality: The story of Inotia 4 deserves an 8/10. Instead of a typical fantasy story, the game lays down something a little more unique. This time around you actually control an evil, ruthless character, who might not be as easily likeable as typical heroes. Of course he has to go through many difficulties and your opinion of him might change. I really like the side from which they approached the story.
General Gameplay: As for the general gameplay, I give it an 8/10 as well. The gameplay is very true to most fantasy RPGs, with a few differences. The mercenary system, skill trees and the main and side stories will keep anyone occupied. If you like story driven games that feature heavy combat, then you will really like this game.
Addictiveness: On the addictiveness scale this game gets an 8/10. Once you step into the world of Inotia and experience the first few tidbits of the story, you will want to know more. You will come back to the game day after day until you find out what happens in the end. This is a perfect story driven game for your mobile device!
Overall Score: 7/10.
