The greatest antagonists in Townsmen are the bandits who like to take advantage of your thriving town and steal the resources you worked so hard to collect and build. This is why a military presence in the town is necessary, otherwise, the bandits will deplete you of your hard work and run your village right into the ground. The strength of your military is measured overall by combat power, which can be broken down to offensive, and defense. From that there is also the care-taking of the army. They need a supply of weapons and armor, first and foremost. They have tavern desires that need to be met, which keeps them in high moral, they need their own inventory of food to feed them, as well as housing. There are also options to build forts and walls for your town for added protection against the bandits.
There are a few tips and tricks to catalyze the overall appeal of the game. For example if there is a task such as building new things, this can generally take a lot of time. I enjoyed the game and found it quite addicting once I got familiar with all the technicalities, which there are a lot of. Townsmen leaves nothing out! It’s a lot of bookkeeping due to its intricacy. Nothing is a typical objective but rather every task is laid out in very specific detail as to what needs to be done to maintain the conditions of the town.
For example, when it says that you’re low on resources it tells you exactly which resources on a percentage scale. There are pages upon pages of food available. To name a few the food includes: grapes, wheat, flour, honey, and drinks.
I definitely enjoyed learning about all of the details that go into governing a village. I appreciated the creativity of tasks such as building roads and bridges and being able to choose where to put them and essentially designing the town the way I would like for it to look. I also enjoyed the daily routines for the various villagers. When assigned with a task to obtain a fisherman to gather fish for the villagers, first you have to consider the responsibility of building him a home by the water with architecture that caters to his occupation.
Therefore I would then assign workers to build a home for him so that he may do his job. So essentially, everyone works together in this town with their own tasks, It’s up to you to organize everything and create a fluid and peaceful as well as productive dynamic for the villagers. However at times the tasks and quests can get a bit redundant because it seems as if the responsibilities for up-keeping the town never really end, there’s always more that needs to be done.
The visuals of townsmen as well as the artwork are very welcoming and bright. You were allowed to move the camera as well as zoom in and out of various places. The fact that an advertisement covered nearly 1/3 of the screen the entire time was perhaps the worst part of Townsmen. I understand the need for free games to place advertisements in games, but to make one so large and obtrusive went way beyond what was necessary. The music and sound effects were slightly irrelevant and were overwhelmed by the amount of tasks at hand and all that was actually going on in the village.
I would not go so far as to say that the story was original but I have to give the game credit as far as how extensive the playing is. It becomes addictive because you invest a lot of time into developing the city and you make it your own for 2016 and you want to see it thrive. There-in lies the appeal.
