Arcuz – Behind the Dark is a browser Role-Playing game published initially by the Armor Games (known better as Games of Gondor) and then published on most of the browser-based gaming portals. The game is pretty popular among users in 2016 having an average rating of 4.5 out of 5 on most of the sites where it’s hosted and a big player base.
In this game you take the role of a young adventurer who finds out about the recent strange events from the village of Arcuz and arrives here to explore the surroundings. You will face tainted animals and creatures, you will discover long-forgotten secrets and you will fight and try to defeat the evil which shadowed this little village. Prepare yourself for a long journey filled with twisted events.
Arcuz – Behind the Dark doesn’t require a mandatory sign-up but your latest saved game will be always available if you don’t clear your cookies or change your browser. In order to continue your adventure make sure you press “Continue” instead of “New Game” or you will lose all the progress. Also, if you want to access the Arena game mode, you will need to be at least level 8 in the adventure mode.
The game is a browser title so there aren’t any microtransactions available. In other words, there isn’t any way to show your support to the developers. Probably the only thing you can do is Like/Share the title on Facebook (or whatever social account are you using) and, if that’s the case, disable “ad block” while playing.

If there is something I am proud of when talking about gaming is that I am old enough to say that I played some good old text-based titles but young enough to still appreciate the modern games. Arcuz – Behind the Dark is one of those titles that don’t say much until you play them. If you are over 20, you will find yourself back to your childhood and if you are younger you will see how us, ‘old folks, used to play computer games.
Probably the best feature Arcuz – Behind the Dark has is the way the developers recreated the old RPG atmosphere. Call me old or a hipster or even a vintage lover, but there is something special about old RPGs that it isn’t present nowadays. In addition to this, the game has a hero story, a lot of crafting involved, different weapons, dungeons, treasure chests and many more – basically anything it should have.
One other things about Arcuz is the fact that some of the quests are really weird and not related – kill a specified amount of creatures in a short period of time (I chased slims all over the map), find a missing teddy bear or save the world from destruction. All of this are successfully contributing to the overall impression of the game. Another great thing is the fact that there is another game mode where you will fight with other players (Arena). It is also worth mentioning the fact that even though the game is browser-based, you have all sort of settings you can ‘play’ with – overall quality of the graphics, sounds, difficulty and so on.
In the following lines I will explain briefly what I would change if given the possibility or what I simply don’t like about Arcuz –Behind the Dark. First of all, I must say that I am disappointed of the lack of customization of my character. I said earlier that I was impressed by the thorough character development which is unusual for such browser games but not being able to change some basic stuff like gender, hairstyle and hair color is odd. I think that a feature like this will add some unicity to the game and it is well known that being unique is cool.
Secondly, I believe that the game should have been played more using the mouse. I can’t really complain about the controls but I think that I should be able to control the character using the mouse or not use the mouse at all. It is weird that I need to do some of the basic actions only by clicking. It doesn’t feel natural. Last but not least, I think that the game needs some additional content – more side quests, more zones to explore or even a new adventure. Currently, Arcuz lacks closure – after you kill the big bad boss, you don’t feel fulfilled and your thirst for adventure will be even higher.
Overall, I would definitely recommend Arcuz – Behind the Dark. I don’t know about you guys but when I’m done with this game I will definitely play some Diablo or some Gothic. And if you liked those titles, you will be doing exactly the same.
Ratings
Artwork: Arcuz – Behind the Dark gets a rating of 7 out of 10 for its artwork. The theme the developers approached is fantasy/medival and all the game’s elements are reflecting that. This title doesn’t look modern and you can clearly see the Flash limitations but I believe that the graphics aren’t the most important part of an 2016 RPG game like Arcuz. The character design is interesting and the environment is decent enough even though there are a lot of unfinished edges and a lot of pixels here and there. The few animations I encountered are also residing within the overall parameters – cute but mostly old.
Music & SFX: I give the game a rating of 7 out of 10 at this section. Initially, I thought it deserved a higher rating but after enough playtime I realized that it was not the case. The soundtrack is really good and it provides the perfect atmosphere for a game like this but unfortunately it is way too limited – the same less than a minute song over and over again will mess with your head in no time. The SFX is interesting but it is also pretty limited and if you are hoping for voices, you will be disappointed because there aren’t any. There is still room for improvement.
Story/Originality: Arcuz – Behind the Dark gets a rating of 8 out of 10 for its story and originality. The game has a pretty basic story which is basically a cliché but that is not necessarily a bad thing. Most of the elements encountered in Arcuz can be found in most of RPGs no matter what the platform (mobile, browsers, consoles, PCs) so it wouldn’t be fair to say that it is not authentic. Players should be thankful that there is a story and that the quests are various enough not to become boring. RPG fans will definitely appreciate the game from this point of view.
General Gameplay: The game gets a rating of 8 out of 10 at this section. In Arcuz – Behind the Dark, the gameplay itself is pretty straight-forward – you get a weapon and you banish evil creatures from the land. The tutorial is thorough and it explains anything you need to know. However, the problems lie elsewhere – it can be overwhelming to decide what skills to get, how to add your stat points, what weapon enchantments to get and how to approach different enemies. It is worth mentioning that all of this ‘issues’ are specific to RPGs. For the time I’ve played I haven’t encountered any major bugs, freezes or crashes.
Addictiveness: I give Arcuz – Behind the Dark a rating of 8 out of 10 for its addictiveness. From the beginning I must say that the game is the perfect choice for RPG players who want to relive the old times because the atmosphere of Arcuz is perfect for such thing. If you are a new player, you may or may not like the game. Besides the fairly long adventure mode, there is an arena mode where you fight with other players which is a great thing. As I mentioned before, the character progression and the variety of items and crafting is something unusual for a Flash game and people may be impressed.
Overall, Arcuz – Behind the Dark gets a rating of 7.6 out of 10. The game brings back memories so if you are a melancholic RPG player you will definitely spend some time with this title. There isn’t any true potential behind Arcuz but a fair share of players will definitely appreciate it nevertheless.
