There are a total of six categories in the in-game store. The first category is called House, in which you can purchase different kinds of houses and construct them in your city. The more houses you have, the more people will start moving into your city. The second category is called Commercial, in which you can purchase and construct different kinds of business in your city. Every commercial building allows you to collect a profit after a certain period of time.
The third category is called Community, in which you can purchase and construct buildings such as Schools and Police Stations. These buildings will increase the happiness of the people that live in your city, which means that they will work harder. The forth category is called Decorations, and in this category, you can purchase items such as Trees, Parks and Pools. Decorative items will also increase the happiness of the people that live in your city.
The fifty category is called Build, in which you can purchase additional cranes. At the beginning of your gameplay, you only possess five cranes, which means that you can construct five buildings at the same time. By purchasing additional cranes, you will be able to construct more buildings at the same time. You can only purchase extra cranes with gold bars or real money.
The sixth and last category is called Currencies, and in this category, you can purchase in-game currencies with real money. Before you start playing City Island 3 – Building Sim, you should turn on Airplane Mode on your mobile device, which disconnects you from any incoming internet connection such as Wi-Fi and 3G/4G. Because of this, City Island 3 – Building Sim is not able to push advertisements onto your mobile device, meaning that you will not be annoyed or bothered by advertisements during your gameplay anymore. After you are finished playing City Island 3 – Building Sim, you can turn off Airplane Mode and use your mobile device as you have been before.
Before I started playing City Island 3 – Building Sim, I already know about the other City Island games by the same developer. In fact, I reviewed several of those games already, which means that I knew what I was getting myself into with City Island 3 – Building Sim.
Not much has changed in City Island 3 – Building Sim, compared to the other City Island games; however, this doesn’t necessarily mean that the game is bad. I really like the fact that the developers managed to add all kinds of different buildings and islands to the game, giving the game fresh and entertaining feeling. If you enjoy playing city builder/simulation games, then City Island 3 – Building Sim might just be what you are looking for.
Unfortunately, City Island 3 – Building Sim also has several negative aspects. First of all, I really dislike the fact that the developers have implemented a playtime limitation system, which is in the form of construction timers. Every time you start constructing a building, you will have to wait till the timer runs out, before the building construction is actually finished. At the beginning of the gameplay, the timers will only last for a couple of minutes, which isn’t that bad; however, once you start progressing through the game, you will have to wait longer and longer.
At some point, you will even have to wait whole days for your buildings to be finished constructing. Of course, you can speed things along by spending either in-game cash or gold bars; however, you will run out of them fairly quickly, which means that the developers are trying to push people to purchase in-game currencies with real money. This simply makes City Island 3 – Building Sim feel like a cheap cash grab, which is very unfortunate.
Coming to the point where City Island 3 – Building Sim feels like a cheap cash grab. The fact that the developers also implemented a lot of pop-up advertisements into the game, simply makes things worse. The pop-ups are in the form of short videos, which you can close after a few seconds; however, no one is waiting to get annoyed or bothered in such a way.
The developers do give you an option to remove the advertisements by spending real money in the game, but this doesn’t take away the fact that it feels like the developers want people to accidentally tap on the advertisements, just so that they can earn some ad-revenue.
As I have mentioned many times before, reward systems like Tapjoy do not always work flawlessly, which is why I feel like they shouldn’t be implemented in games like City Island 3 – Building Sim. You can allegedly earn free gold coins by downloading and testing out other games and applications in 2016; however, there are many complaints that reward systems like Tapjoy do not actually pay you out. I believe that the developers of City Island 3 – Building Sim should look into implementing build-in reward systems, instead of using third-party reward systems.
City Island 3 – Building Sim Ratings
Artwork: I give City Island 3 – Building Sim an 8/10 for its artwork. The graphics and animations in City Island 3 – Building Sim are pretty decent, especially considering that it is a free-to-play mobile game. The graphics are pretty similar to the graphics in the previous City Island games; however, there are definitely new buildings and objects included. I really like the fact that there are multiple different island available, which you can unlock by playing the game.
Music & SFX: I give City Island 3 – Building Sim a 7/10 for its music and SFX. There is only one soundtrack and several sound effects in City Island 3 – Building Sim, which are also of decent quality. The soundtrack plays in a constant loop, and fits the overall theme of the game. The sound effects range from main menu button SFX to construction SFX.
Story & Originality: I give City Island 3 – Building Sim a 7/10 for its story and originality. Game developer Sparkling Society is already widely known for city builder/simulation games, with City Island 3 – Building Sim being the third instalment of the City Island series. Since I already played the previous games, I can’t really say that City Island 3 – Building Sim is very original. There is no story behind the game, but the tutorial does give insight on what you are supposed to do.
General Gameplay: I give City Island 3 – Building Sim an 8/10 for general gameplay. The gameplay in City Island 3 – Building Sim starts with a very nice tutorial, in which you learn how to properly play the game. After a while, the gameplay does become pretty straightforward, but still entertaining to play due to all the different buildings that you can construct. The controls are pretty smooth and responsive, allowing you to easily construct buildings and roads.
Addictiveness: I give City Island 3 – Building Sim a 7/10 for addictiveness. The addictiveness of City Island 3 – Building Sim really depends on the fact if you enjoy playing city builder/simulation games. I do enjoy playing games in this genre, but not for several hours a day. Because of the fact that the game has advertisements and a playtime limitation in the form of construction timers, the addictiveness significantly drops for me as well.
All things considered, I give City Island 3 – Building Sim a 7/10.
