Hearthstone Guide: Basic Mage Deck

This deck is quite balanced and is without doubt one of the best starter decks possible out of all classes put together! The basic Mage cards are really very powerful! They will allow you to control the table without any trouble and keep your creatures deal your enemy damage!

The Key Cards

The key cards of this deck are the very powerful basic mage cards that will help rid you of enemy creatures very easily! You should try to have maximum control until turn 7 to then finish off your enemy with your big creatures!

• Fireball

6 damage for 4 mana, it's a very worthwhile card! Use it on the big enemy creatures or to finish off the enemy hero. Be careful not to overreact, in other words, don't use this card on the little creatures, that would be a total waste of this card.

• Polymorph

A very powerful removal, is there a legendary card in front of you? A divine shield that counters your Fireball? No worries, you have your sheep! To be used with caution, because your opponent will try to make you use your two morphs before playing his biggest cards!

• Flamestrike

Very practical for cleaning the whole board, but be careful, this spell costs a lot (7 mana) and you often won't be able to do anything else during the turn you play this card! On the other hand it can really be very useful for clearing a big Hunter or Shaman board!

• Water Elemental

For 4 mana you have a 3/6 creature that freezes! Pretty worthwhile, this creature can trade with two or even three creatures, or either immobilise the enemy hero or a very big enemy creature! Try to buff it with your Shattered Sun Cleric to make it even more efficient!

The Full Deck

Your deck is made up of the best of the basic Hearthstone cards that will allow you to play cards with each turn! Your mage cards will be used to sweep the board of enemy creatures while the neutral creatures will help you to finish off your opponent's health points!

Standard moves of a game

Turn 1

Unfortunately, as with a lot of basic decks, turn 1 is very weak because you don't have a drop 1. It's best if you have The Coin to be able to play either a River Crocolisk or a Bloodfen Raptor.

Turn 2

The deck should play for time in the early game because you have a lot of cards that cost 4 mana. In turn 2 try to kill the enemy creature with your Power, an Arcane Missile or a Frostbolt!

Turn 3

If you have The Coin, don't hesitate to use it to play a Yeti, a Sen’jin or Water Elemental. These three creatures are very powerful, and even more so in turn 3! If you don't have the Coin, try to play for time again with your Power and Mirror Image, for example.

Turn 4

The situation is now clear, play one of your 4 crystal monters to start to conquer the board.

Turn 5-6-7

Try to keep your monsters alive on the board by using your spells to get rid of the biggest enemy creatures!

Turn 7+

Keep the game going by continuing to play your creatures while controlling the board with your spells! Try to keep your creatures alive! Prioritise clearing the board with your spells rather than with your creatures!

Strengths and Weaknesses

The + of the deck

 Free!
 Very easy to play.
 ideal for starting the game.

The - of the deck

A Starter Deck, so weak against decks built from very big cards.
Balanced, but therefore won't resist a full aggro or very late game deck.
