Controller

Camera controls and aiming system

On foot

To control camera use right analog stick. You can change the distance between Niko and the camera by pressing the Back button. Additionally, you can use R3 to look behind.

Pressing LT while on foot engages aiming mode. You can target any person in the game. Armed with a gun you are able to lock on a target. To aim manually - press LT only a little bit. For auto-aiming press LT to the end.

It's important to crouch (L3). Crouching increases Niko's accuracy. Additionally you can perform roll left or roll right maneuver. To do so: raise your weapon (LT), press X and move left analog stick left or right (you can roll while standing and crouching - L3).

Look behind view (R3).

While in a car you can change your view by pressing the Back button. In the same fashion as on foot - you can use right analog stick to look around and press R3 to look behind. Pressing B engages TV camera, but if you do it while a car chase sequence it will focus view on a car you are chasing. During TV view press L3 to slow down time (Matrix-style).

You can perform a drive-by shooting by pressing LB. But remember that only certain weapon types are allowed to be used in a car. To change your currently equipped weapon press X.

You can also throw grenades - it is important to keep in mind, that Niko throws them behind. The longer you hold down the RT button, the sooner it will explode after throwing it.

Walking and running

Jumping and climbing

Press the X button to jump.

Press X nearby a wall to make Niko climb it. If it is small enough - Niko will jump over it. But if it is higher - he will hand on it's edge. While hanging, you can use left analog stick to move sideways. To climb and edge press X button again or Y - if you want Niko to drop.

Niko can also use other means of getting to higher places, like ladders. To use a ladder press the Y button. You can speed up climbing by holding down the A button.

Swimming

Swimming was simplified when compared to San Andreas. In GTA4 Niko can only float on water. Controls are similar to walking - use left analog stick to point a direction you want Niko to swim and press A to make Niko swim faster.

Health and armor

Death

When you die you go to the nearest hospital. You will have to pay for your treatment (the exact sum of money varies) and you will spend in hospital several hours.

Map and GPS

Map is your best friend in Liberty City. It shows nearby streets, locations and your targets. Additionally, when in car, it shows you way to selected waypoint.

Cell phone allows you to contact persons you've got in your phonebook (Phonebook), read messages (Messages), check your scheduled meetings (Organizer) and activate multiplayer mode (Multiplayer). Later in game you will be able to take pictures using built-in camera (Camera) - but it's useful only during missions.

You can adjust ringtones and themes in options menu (Options). To buy more of theme - visit Whiz Mobile while surfing the in-game internet.

Saving game

Games saves it's state automatically (but you can turn it off in main options menu), right after you made progress in games completion. Anyway, you can save your game in one of Niko's flats. To do so - stand in the icon near bed and, as the onscreen information appears, press the Y button.

Car thefts

Driving a car

To sound a horn - press and hold the L3 button, tapping it will cause vehicles like police car or ambulance to turn on it's signal. Holding down X turns on lights, and when turned on - switches between long and short lights.

Boat controls

Flying a helicopter

Things get a little complicated here. Use RT and LT to adjust the main rotor torque. Left analog stick control main rotor's deflection - which allows you to fly forward, backward and sideways. RB and LB buttons controls the tail rotor. Controlling tail rotor makes helicopter rotate left or right. Additionally, when you press both RB and LB you will stabilise helicopter, that should help you during landing. Later in game you can find and Annihilator attack copter and you can fire it's cannons by pressing X.

Traveling by taxi

Try shouting for a taxi by pressing LB. When the taxi stops, remember to hold down(!) Y if you want to ride as a passenger.

Inside, choose your destination using left analog stick. You can ask driver to hurry up using X, or skip the entire traveling process by pressing A. However - both of these option will cost you more money.

Covering system

There is a Wanted Level Star indicator in the upper right corner of the screen. The more you're wanted, the more stars you've got.

One star

The police will try to arrest you, they won't use weapons and will eventually a police cruiser will be send to investigate your case.

Two stars

The more you break the law, or attempt to attack a policeman, the more stars you get. At two star he police will utilise their firearms..

Three stars

More police cruisers, LCPD Maverick helicopter and Patriot SUV will take up chase and policemen will act more aggressively. You will automatically earn a three star wanted level when you shoot a cop. Roadblocks and LCPD Predator boats will spawn to prevent you from getting to another island.

Four stars

At four stars N.O.O.S.E. agents and vehicles appear - they are heavy armored and armed. You also can spot the Annihilator helicopter gunship in the sky.

Five stars

It's much the same as four stars wanted level, but this time F.I.B agents come to play.

Six stars

It is the last stage. The police will now shoot while driving, spawn multiple Annihilators, you will spot plenty of F.I.B. and N.O.O.S.E agents. Everything will get extremely intense.

Losing the police

Losing the police is all the revolution in GTA 4 is about. To lose the cops all you have to do is get out of the Wanted Zone. Wanted Zone is a flashing circle on your radar.

When wanted, your radar will show all the police cars and patrols. Try to avoid them, because every policeman that spot you becomes the center of a new Wanted Zone. It is important to manouver a lot, change your route often and stay off the major roads.

Being arrested

After you get arrested by the police, you will be transported to a nearby police station. There they will take away all your weapons and some money.

Drug Delivery

 

After you finish "Shadow" mission, you get a call from Little Jacob offering you work. Now you can call Jacob and select Job in the menu, to start a mission. There are 10 tasks waiting for you. All you have to do is: get to a car located at the starting point (0) and follow the onscreen direction. The missions are ordered randomly:

1. Beechwood City Timer.

2. Cerveza Heights.

3. East Island City Tunnel Timer.

4. Meadow Hills Ambush.

5. Meadows Park Ambush.

6. Meadows Park Festival Towers Sting.

7. Outlook Park Ambush.

8. Schoottler Timer.

9. Steinway Apartment Tower Timer.

10. Willis Alley Sting.

Vigilante

Vigilante Missions are unlocked after completing "Crime and Punishment" mission. To start one, you have to get into the police car and access it's computer by pressing the LB button while it's not moving. Select "View Current Crimes" from the menu and the choose one of the incidents that appear onscreen.

All you have to do is follow the onscreen directions and kill all the criminals you encounter.

 

 

The Taxi Fare

 

After you finish "Vigilante Heat" mission, you get a call from Roman offering you work. Now you can call Jacob and select Job in the menu. Then pick up his cab from the cab depot (marked by a blue blip on the radar) and follow the fare that appears somewhere on the radar.

The fast you drop them off where they want to go, the more likely you are to receive the larger fee.

This job opportunity ends after completing "Roman's Sorrow" mission.

Most Wanted Missions are unlocked after completing "Crime and Punishment" mission. To start one, you have to get into the police car and access it's computer by pressing the LB button while it's not moving. Select "View Current Crimes" from the menu and the choose one of the suspects that appear onscreen.

The idea is simple - you have to get to the place shown on your radar and kill the suspect. There are 10 crooks one each of the 3 islands.
