If you already spend too much time playing and thinking about Destiny, don’t read this article. It’s easy to get totally caught up in the game and dedicate your life to it, just like other MMOs like World of Warcraft. But if you’re willing to risk a few more minutes (or hours) of time lost to Destiny, here are four places to supplement your experience.
Did you know that there’s a Destiny companion app for iOS and Android? Most companion apps aren’t super exciting, but this one is actually really great. You can read the latest news from Bungie, see your Guardian and equipment, check the status on your current bounties, and see which bounties and equipment are available from vendors. There are also a wealth of stats, including the number of days and hours that you’ve spent playing, and statistics specific to each game mode.
Where the Destiny app is really cool, though, is in the Grimoire cards. Have you noticed that throughout the game, you’ll get notifications at the bottom of the screen telling you that you’ve collected a new Grimoire card? Ever taken the time to check them out? You should, and the companion app is a great way to do it. The cards contain a lot of lore about the Destiny universe, and can help you really get a grasp on the storyline that’s not always super clear during the actual gameplay.
If you’re on Windows Phone and you feel left out, don’t fret! There’s an unofficial app called Destiny Stats that you can use to get a lot of the same information.
If statistics are your thing, DestinyTracker is a site you’ll want to check out. After adding your gamer ID, DestinyTracker will pull tons of stats from the servers and rank you against other players from around the world. Want to see how your overall kill/death ratio compares to all other players? Or which medals you’ve earned and which you have yet to get? You can find all of that and more on your profile page.
The other hugely useful resource on DestinyTracker is the looking-for-group (LFG) page. If you need some help clearing the weekly Heroic strike, the weekly Nightfall strike, or the raid, this is a great place to recruit some people for your fireteam. This page is very active, and I recently used it to meet up with a couple guys to play through the highest level of the weekly Heroic.
The Destiny universe is a very large, very rich one. There are lots of weapons, classes, races, stories, factions, and locations that add to the game’s lore and atmosphere. There are a lot of websites out there that have collected vast amounts of information, but Destinypedia stands out as one of the best. If you’re looking for the background on a notable building that you’ve stumbled across, the stats on a weapon you’re working toward, or details on methods of transport, Destinypedia has you covered.
It’s clear that the site is in its early days, and that it has a long way to go before becoming an absolutely necessary resource, but you can find some really interesting stuff if you dig enough (not all of it is well indexed yet). And a lot of the pages need edits and more information, so you can contribute!
If you don’t know what you’re looking for, and you just want to read things about Destiny, the Destiny subreddit is a great resource. You can get strategy tips, discussions about certain strikes and maps, and tangentially related things like this ridiculously awesome 3D-printed fusion rifle. (You might run across some Destiny-related discussion in these 4 lesser-known subreddits, as well.)
In addition to /r/DestinytheGame, there’s /r/fireteams, where you can find people to strike and raid with—there are loads of people looking to help others, so if you need some assistance, this is a great place to look. They’re even testing an auto-matchmaking bot that will assign you to a relevant fireteam when you’re looking to complete a certain mission, which could save you a lot of time looking around when they get the bugs worked out.
It’s not hard to get sucked into the universe of Destiny. And if just playing the game for hours a day isn’t enough, you can now spend your time reading as much about it as you want. Don’t forget to eat and sleep.
