Since collecting points is an important aspect of Bulletstorm and its skillshot system, we’ve blast our way through Elysium to find out which skillshots are worth attempting, as well as when to spot the best opportunities to score big.
This is the mandatory assault rifle and cannot be switched out. Unfortunately it’s also the most boring, earning meagre 10 points per kill. This means you’re usually better off kick enemies into environmental hazards than concentrating kills with this weapon, though Mercy (shooting the balls then killing them) and Gag Reflex (shooting the throat) can add to your total. When you get the charged shots, however, make sure to keep an eye out for an X-Ray shot, where two enemies are hit with the same shot.
The Flailgun’s benefits don’t come in its high-scoring skillshots, instead its ability to combo kills together makes it perfect suited for large groups of mutants. Homie Missile is a particularly valuable skillshot, so be sure to propel an enemy towards another group and attach a flail. Once nearby, explode the floating baddie for massive points. Alternatively, using charge shots or explosives to rip through enemies will score you a ton of points.
The sniper rifle has a handy feature where you can ark the bullet as it approaches your enemy. Your enemies will try to avoid being hit as the bullet approaches, but with practice you should have no issues hitting them. However, a simple kill is not enough – scoring only 10 points – so be sure to aim for a headshot, scoring you a total of 125 points. With charged shots, try aiming for Early Retirement; allowing you to direct their body through the air – do this into an environmental hazard, scoring you an easy 100 points.
Like the Flailgun before it, the Bouncer is best used in packs, since a combo will increase the total score given. Use Thumper to bounce a group of enemies into the air and carefully explode a cannonball in their midst to score Meat Fountain. In one on ones, however, it’s easiest to hit them with a cannonball to knock them down, releasing the trigger to explode and kill the enemiy – rewarding you with the skillshot Bully.
You won’t get this until later in the game, however it is great fun to use. Where enemies stand close to each other, fire a javelin and it should grab both of them (providing them are behind each other and not side-by-side). Alternatively, Twisted rewards you for hitting them with a javelin but killing them through some other means – combine this with the electrical rain outside for a combo with Outburst for 100 points.
While it is possible to score a decent amount of points with the Screamer, it is considerably harder to do so. You’re best bet is to unlock the charged shots and use the rocket to earn Fireball (attach a rocket to an enemy which explodes to kill a different one) or Fireworks (fire a rocket onto a Thumped enemy). To really score big with this weapon you’ll need careful planning: set a group of at least three enemies on fire with a charged shot, then quickly gun your opponents down for Firefighter.
The shotgun is a handy weapon to quickly blast through enemies, especially with its charged, flesh-melting shots. However, it’s not too handy for scoring points, since few are easy to pull off and most aren’t very valuable. Piledriver is your best option: kick or leash an enemy into the air and use a mid-range shotgun blasts to push their floating body into a wall. This will be worth 100, and though it is fairly difficult to acquire, it is by far your best option with the Boneduster.
Scenic traps such as cacti, spiked railings or electrical currents are the best situational elements to use. You’ll score 100 points each time these are used and, though you won’t score as many points as utilising group-killing shots, they are easy and constant. Don’t be afraid to kick one mutant after another into barbed wire if you see no other way of scoring huge amounts of points.
If you really have no other alternatively, simply kick an enemy off a ledge. Through Bulletstorm there are many situations where you can boot an enemy off the side to his death and, though it only scores 50 points, it is sometimes the best option available to you.
There are 20 bottles of alcohol dotted throughout the game. Each time you glug the stuff your aim will be hindered and vision impaired, yet every kill you do earn will score you an extra 100 points. These are usually located near sections with a large group of enemies, so equip an explosive weapon, take a swig and fire away.
If in doubt, kick a barrel at the bad guys. This will only score you 50 points, but it’s better than nothing if you have no other alternative. Additionally, spotting a lone hot dog stand will be handy; anyone caught directly in its blast will net you 50 extra points, while the rest will be propelled into the air for extra options.
These plants appear about halfway through the game and will grow on trees. Leash or kick these onto the heads of your enemies then finish them off, scoring you an extra 50 points or – if you’re really skilful – 100 points for decapitating or lancing a Nomed enemy.
Though this can be achieved with the standard rifle, you’ll really want to make use of this for those times you’re handed a Gatling gun. Don’t release the trigger and each kill after the first will score you an extra 50 points. Don’t throw these points away by making sure your hail of bullets doesn’t stop until its overheats.
You’ll score 250 points for every boss killed, but to double those points you’ll want to kill them in a very special way. Once you’ve destroyed their armour and helmet, stun them again then use your leash or boot on his head, scoring you the added skillshots. When trying to stun these minibosses, avoid hitting the head to ensure you don’t accidentally kill them.
There will be a number of times you’ll battle gyrocopters throughout Bulletstorm – leashing them out will score you a boost to your points rather than the pitiful 10 points for simply blowing them up. If you have the Head-hunter handy, snipe them as soon as you project them from the chopper for a nice little score boost.
These are scattered throughout Bulletstorm and can often be overheard when in their nearby vicinity. Simply destroying these will get you an easy 500 points, so well worth looking out for. If you manage to use these things to kill nearby enemies, however, and you’ll add to that total too.
The best thing you can do is to hunt each and every skillshot. Not only will this lead to unlocking the Golden Idol Trophy or Achievement, but you’ll earn five times as many points each time you achieve a skillshot for the first time. This means the easy, low-scoring skillshots will earn you 125 points while tougher ones will score 500 points.
