Gears Of War 3: Secrets & Easter Eggs Revealed

Gears of War 3 is out, and we’ve been hitting the campaign solidly to find as many hidden campaign secrets as we can. Here is a list of the secrets we’ve found so far, but keep an eye out for new additions as we find them. However, please be aware of spoilers, and don’t say we didn’t warn you!

Act One, Chapter One: “Anchored”

Thrashball Machine: Right from the start of the campaign, Marcus is woken suddenly by Lambent forces attacking their sea freighter Sovereign. Your first task is to find Dom and reach the upper decks to help repel the invasion. After Dom joins your party, you will walk up a flight of steps to a recreation room that looks like this:

On the right is a Thrashball table game. While you can’t play it, every time you press X next to it, the machine emits a loud, randomised Cole Train quote.

Free Chocolate:
Just after walking past the Thrashball machine, a cut-scene will introduce Jace Stratton, one of the game’s new characters. The scene shows Jace hitting a vending machine, trying to get the last piece of chocolate to fall out the vending slot.

As Dom warns Jace that the chocolate must be well past its sell-by date, Jace gives up. When you regain control of Marcus, simply walk up to the machine and press X to kick it. The candy bar drops out and Marcus says, “Well, it’s mine now.” Cheeky sod.

Act One, Chapter Three: “Homecoming”

Playpark Slide:
This Easter egg can only be activated by the person playing as Cole Train. At the start of the chapter, the COG comes across a Stranded outpost in Cole’s hometown Hanover.

Once there, a gruff old man states that the survivors are unwilling to trade with COG, the old man suggests that the group try the warehouse outpost further down the street.

Along the way, you will come across a children’s play park, complete with swings and a slide. Suddenly, a battle erupts, and during the fight, the person playing as Cole can go down the slide by approaching it and pressing X. Then this happens:

This triggers a cutscene that every player in the party sees, in which Cole zips down the slide while shouting his trademark ‘WOOO!’ Hilarious; but only possible once during the battle.

The Thrashies Standee:
Possible the source of Gears of War 3’s best one-liner, this Easter egg can be found inside the Hanover supermarket, right after a battle in one of the aisles. After Sam points out that there are Lambent Polyps on the roof, the Lambent will invade the supermarket. The fight looks like this:

After the battle, you will work your way down this aisle and make a left turn. In the top right corner of the room, you will find another cardboard cut out of Cole, advertising Thrashies breakfast cereal, but this time there is a glowing blue button in front of it. The cut-out looks like this:

Hit X to press the blue button, and the Cole figure will shout a hilarious advertising slogan. We won’t spoil it for you though. Keep on pressing it repeatedly and the cut-out will play Cole’s massive rant to Queen Myrrah near the end of Gears of War 2.

The Cougars Cap:
There is a baseball cap for Cole’s old Thrashball team The Cougars sitting on the back of a truck, just before you enter the play-park earlier in the chapter. The cap can be found here:

The person playing as Cole can approach it, press X then choose to put the cap on normally, or back to front. It then stays on Cole’s head until it blows off during a zip-line ride in Act One, Chapter Five.

There is a second cap next to the talking Thrashies cut-out of Cole, inside the Hanover supermarket but again, only Cole can wear it.
