If things get a bit much for Aiden in Ubisoft’s Watch Dogs, you’re able to let him rest in a deep sleep. Oh how kind that would be… But while he’s unconscious, Aiden will have a warped perception of Chicago and wreak havoc in the scenarios he imagines. All of this is done with the power of the Digital Trip app. It activates a high wave frequency to temporarily knock Aiden out, yet let his imagination flow.
But even while unconscious, the Digital Trips put Aiden through his paces with objectives designed to challenge him. Completing them earn you points during Digital Trips, as you would do when playing Watch Dogs normally, and similarly there are upgrades and skills to be had in the Digital Trips too. The Spider Tank, for example, has upgrades including Hydraulic Claw and Emergency Protocol. That combination of words will have many fans excited to play through one of the Digital Trips for themselves!
There are 5 different Digital Trips in total:
Conspiracy – Aiden takes the role of a cyborg hunter in this Digital Trip, seeking to destroy any human-shaped robots. To do this, of course, Aiden requires new equipment that can get better and better. Fundamentally you’ll need to use your smartphone to profile everyone and uncover which people are genuine and which are cyborgs. To play the Conspiracy Digital Trip, Watch Dog fans will need to purchase it as a DLC to the game or have the Watch Dogs Season Pass.
Psychedelic – The name alone makes you think of ‘Flower Power’ and that seems to be the intention exactly. While playing this Digital Trip you will have to hop from one giant flower to another. That’s quite a contrast from the criminal-ridden city of Chicago that we’re used to. But there are still points to score. Jump high enough between the flowers to hit floating rings and get a top score. Although falling won’t result in your death, it reduces your points and resets the multiplier, which isn't good either. There are 17 tracks for you to race through, if you complete them all there is an outfit for Aiden after the finish line.
Spider Tank – This Digital Trip is quite literally what it says on the tin. You get the chance to operate a giant Spider Tank around Chicago and create hysteria and havoc. As real spiders do, the Spider Tank can attach itself to walls and functions on 8 legs. By completing your objectives by killing police officers, wrecking vehicles or exploding things, you’ll be rewarded with a Spider Tank-themed outfit.
Madness – More like a nightmare than the peaceful sleep Aiden may actually need, Madness will see you roam around a monstrous version of Chicago. Evil looking figures will walk fiery streets and demonic police officers will periodically chase you too. The objective in this Digital Trip is to ‘collect’ as many demon souls as possible, resulting in you killing many many criminals. If you’re good that is. On the plus side, you get to do it all from the comfort of an armored car, which can be upgraded for better destruction.
Alone – Chicago has been overthrown by ctOS robots and they rule the roost in this Digital Trip. Your task is to work through the city, liberating the various districts. The ctOS controls daylight in this version of the future and you have to take it back to be successful. Detection won’t cause your loss, but you may lose your life. Managing to free all of the districts will earn you the trophy, which is the outfit Aiden wears during this Digital Trip. If you favor stealth tactics during Main Missions, this Digital Trip could be a great, fun challenge for you. For the rest of us however, it may get the adrenaline pumping.
