Races
Sylvari: This humanoid race lives in The Grove. They spawn from a plant called the Pale Tree and have a strong innate desire to learn. This plantlike race is the youngest of the classes.
Charr: Once at war with the humans, the beast-like Charr have made an alliance with their former enemies in the face of these new threats. What they lack in intelligence they make up with their vast knowledge of technology. They live in Ascalon, a city that appropriately looks smoggy, grungy, and industrial.
Human: The humans in this game live in a very well fortified castle called Divinity’s Reach. Their intelligence level is pretty high, although you wouldn’t know it from all the civil disputes that take place inside this castle.
Asura: The Asura are a species that, up until recently, had been living underground. After resurfacing, they began to live in Rata Sum. The Asura are expert magicians and are among the most intelligent races. However, they are quite short and leave much to be desired along the lines of physical strength.
Norn: Unlike the Asuras, the Norn race is very adept physically. These wild hunters have the ability to shapeshift. Originally from the icy poles of Tyria, they reside in the snowy city of Hoelbrak that they have built for themselves.
Locations
The Black Citadel is the capital city of the Charr race and the main headquarters of the Iron Legion.
Ascalon: The kingdom of Ascalon is massive and can be subdivided into several smaller regions.
The Blazeridge Steppes are a part of Ascalon. This area is infested with both ogres and Dragonbrand creatures.
Kryta is the only human kingdom in the game. The capitol of Divinity’s Reach can be found here. Kryta is located at the center of the main world continent.
Fireheart Rise can be found in the northern part of Ascalon. It is here that the Citadel of Flame can be located once you begin to interact with the Flame Legion.
The Tarnished Coast is located west of the Sea of Sorrows in Tyria. The Asura and Sylvari have built their capital cities of Rata Sum and The Grove here.
The Shiverpeak Mountains have their range spread throughout a good chunk of Tyria. These mountains divide the area into an eastern and a western half.

The Dagger is a weapon that you can craft by weaponsmithing. They can be used by the Thief, Ranger, Necromancer, and Elemenetalist.

Pistols can be used by Thieves, Mesmers, and Engineers. To obtain them, craft them using the huntsman discipline.
Two Handed Weapons
Guardians and warriors are allowed to use hammers, which are the largest two handed weapons in Guild Wars 2.
There are only a handful of Two-Handed weapons in this game. The first of these is the Greatsword, which is usable for the Warrior, Ranger, Guardian, and Mesmer.
are available to the Warrior and the Ranger classes and are excellent for long distance combat.
The Staff is a slow striking, medium to long range weapon that is compatible with Guardians, Elementalists, Necromancers, and Mesmers.
The Thief and Ranger classes can use shortbows for long distance and ranged combat. This makes the Ranger class the only one able to use both longbows and shortbows. Meaning, they are an invaluable asset to team combat.
You can use the huntsman discipline to create Rifles for Warriors and Engineers.
Warrior Guide
The warrior class features the Adrenaline meter, which is divided into three sections.
Moving up from one of the adrenaline meter’s three phases to another increases attack power.
You can use the warrior’s Adrenaline meter to trigger Burst Skills. These typically deal more damage than regular attacks or trigger unique effects.
The warrior is good for all around gameplay and his selection of one handed weapons.
Elementalist Basics
As an Elementalist, you can align yourself with fire, water, air, or earth. Each of these elemental identities has a different type of magic associated with it.
When aligning with air, you get attack capabilities that are very streamlined and focused.
The fire element specializes in large area damage.
The water element is used for mobility and is great for navigating between multiple enemies.
Earth abilities are conducive to the Elementalist’s survival.
The Elementalist is a fairly complicated class in Guild Wars 2. This group gains abilities by equipping a weapon. They can wield a wide variety of weapons, which give you different abilities depending on which elemental alignment you are set to. This means that you will have abilities to learn for all combinations of weapons and elemental alignments.
Mesmer Basics
As the name suggest, the Mesmer class specializes in illusion type abilities.
Mesmers can create clones and phantasms with different characteristics.
A clone is a weaker copy of your Mesmer while Phantasms look like you but carry their own illusionary weapons. Phantasms are stronger, have more health, and deal more damage than clones.
Once an illusion is created, the Mesmer is able to shatter it. This shattering triggers different effects.
A Mesmer is able to cast long running Mantras which continue to build throughout the course of the battle. Once unleashed, the Mantra is extremely powerful.
Once the Mesmer reaches level 7, they have the ability to swap weapons. This comes at the price of a 10 second cooldown.
Mastering weapon swapping with the Mesmer class is very important as it allows you to access multiple abilities rapidly. This will make you very versatile.
Thief Basics
Thieves are able to steal from essentially every enemy in the game. This includes other players. These items are selected from a group of possible items. What these are specifically depend on the type of enemy, or if you want to be evil, the other player’s profession…
Thieves are able to use the Initiative feature and can also go into Stealth mode. In general, they are very mobile and easy to move around without creating much attention.
Thieves gain special abilities based off of the combination of weapons they are yielding. This means that the offhand choice of weapon is much more of a focus for Thieves than the other professions.
Ranger Basics
The Ranger is a pet class in Guild Wars 2. They are excellent for long ranged combat.
The Ranger class is highly customizable and can learn skills that are pet-specific.
Rangers can influence the area around them by summoning entities called Spirits.
The Ranger class is also capable of setting traps on the ground. Different traps cause different effects.
The Ranger can use both the long bow and the short bow and is great for attacking enemies from a distance. They are a good class for newer players, and unlike the Mesmers, are pretty easy to learn how to use. This isn’t to say there isn’t any depth to this profession- it’s a journey!
Necromancer Basics
The Engineer is a simple class and has a ton of different turrets available to him. You can obvercharge the turrets to augment their effect.
The turrets are diverse and include Rifle Turrets for long range combat, Flame turrets for short range combat, and Healing Turrents.
Engineers can use Backpack Kits which can replace their specific skills. Similarly, they can also use Weapon Kits to replace different weapons.
Necromancer Basics
The Necomancers are tricky and are able to hit surrounding targets with effects by placing Wells in their environment. In smaller areas, they can use Marks to trigger effects.
Remember how Mesmers can summon clones and phantasms? Well, the Necromancers get to raise the dead and use these minions for attacking and defending purposes.
Necromancers can trigger even more powerful effects by destroying one of the minions that they’ve raised.
The Necromancer is a good all around class. In close proximity, they are very fluid with Melee weapons and can deal hefty damage. They are also able to cast spells from far away.
The Necromancer is able to multiple different status effects on their enemies. They fire off their attacks quickly and are hard to defend 1 on 1.
The Necromancer comes with a default healing ability. You can summon a Blood Fiend to leech the health of your enemies and feed it to you. You can then destroy the Blood Fiend in exchange for more health boost.
Necromancers can absorb life force which allows you to use her Death Shroud ability. Death Shroud gives you more powerful spells and the ability to summon stronger/more unique minions.
Guardian Basics
The Guardians are a support class and are most effective when used in combination with another class.
Guardians can create areas called Wards. Enemies cannot pass through these areas, and if you make them strategically, you can give yourself a huge advantage.
Guardians can summon Spirit weapons to fight for them. They can also lay Symbols on the ground. This is their way of influencing their surroundings with an effect.
Guardians also have Virtues, which power them up and increase their abilities.
The Guardian’s support abilities depend on the specific weapon they equip. Although the Guardian is most effective at using skills that benefit a group, they are actually a challenging and exciting class to play. There is a lot of strategy involved, and a lot of the times these guys can turn the tide in a battle.
