Explore the area before entering Slateport City. This is the perfect area to collect power-boosting items to assist your party in battle. You may want to visit the Energy Guru, the beach, the Fan Club, and the Shipyard.
Eventually you’ll have to make your way to the Oceanic Museum. Team Magma (or Aqua) will be waiting inside. They will not fight you at first. Make your way to the second floor to locate Captain Stern. You will be ambushed by two members of Team Magma (or Aqua). Defeat the two in battle to continue.
Speak to Captain Stern and deliver the Devon Parts for Mr. Stone. You will then be greeted by the leader of whichever group you are battling (Archie from Team Aqua or Maxie from Team Magma). Exit the museum after the encounter.
Before leaving, stop by the Contest Spectacular Hall and acquire a Contest Pass and a Pokéblock kit. Once you are ready to leave, head north to Route 110 and exit the city. Pass the Trick House on your way to Mauville City.
Meet with Brendan (or May) on your way to the next city. Acquire the Dowsing Machine and keep moving north. Eventually you will reach Mauville City. Explore the area and collect items from the townsfolk before heading to the gym. You will want to acquire a bicycle from Rydel’s Cycles.
Locate the gym and help Wally out by testing his skills in battle. After a heart-felt thank you from his uncle, enter the gym and challenge Wattson to a battle. You will need to solve the electricity puzzle to move forward. Alter the path of the electricity using the pressure platforms.
Wattson will be using electric type Pokémon. Ground type Pokémon will be extremely effective against this leader. If you are having trouble, try backtracking to the caves and catching a ground type Pokémon to assist you. You may also want to bring paralyze heals for your party. Defeat the leader and obtain the badge.
Mauville City to Gym Battle 4
Head north to track down Team Aqua (or Magma). It will be a long road to their destination in Mt. Chimney. Start on Route 111 South towards the Winstrate Family estate. Smash the rocks to open up the path. Once you encounter the sandstorm, take the alternative west path to Route 112.
Brendan (or May) will meet you on your journey through Route 112. Acquire HM04 – Strength before moving on to the Cable Car station. Upon discovering that the station is being guarded, locate the Fiery Path.
Make your way through the cave until you find an exit to Route 11 North. Explore the area and keep moving towards Route 113. Once again cross paths with Brendan (or May) to restore your Pokémon. Continue through the ashy volcanic area until you finally enter Fallarbor Town.
Brendan (or May) will immediately require your assistance to locate Professor Cozmo. Explore the town before moving on to Route 114 to Meteor Falls. Follow Brendan (or May) into Meteor Falls and regroup with her for a group battle with Team Aqua (or Magma).
Rescue Professor Cozmo despite losing the precious meteorite. Regroup in Fallarbor Town with your friend and the professor. You can either travel with Brendan (or May) to Mauville City, or you can explore the area.
Eventually you will make your way back to Mauville City anyway. It is recommended that you use the Acro Bike in the next section, so you will want to stop by the bike shop. Return to the Cable Car station and use it to reach Mt. Chimney.
Ignore most of the conflicts involving Team Aqua and Team Magma. Simply continuing moving through the mountain until you encounter Admin Shelly (or Admin Tabitha). Defeat the Admin in battle and cross the bridge. Prepare for a major battle with the team leader.
Acquire the meteorite from the leader before they storm off on some other mischievous quest. Continue south towards the Jagged Pass and move down the mountain towards Lavaridge Town. Explore the area before heading to the town’s gym.
Challenge Flannery to a battle. This is a fire type gym, so water type Pokémon will be extremely effective here. Ground type Pokémon will also be effective. If you are having trouble, stock up on potions and burn heals. The floor panels can be used to switch between the main floor and the basement. Use them to reach the gym leader.
Obtain the badge from Flannery and locate Brendan (or May) outside of the gym. Acquire the Go-Goggles that will allow you to move through the obstructive sandstorm on Route 111.

Lavaridge to Gym Battle 5
Brendan (or May) will be waiting for you outside of Flannery’s gym. You will acquire the Go-Goggles that will allow you to navigate through the sandstorm that previously stopped you from entering Route 111.
There are multiple ways to travel back to Petalburg City. The trip has the potential to be very long to encourage exploration, or very short to simply reach the next gym as fast as possible. You may want to take this time to train your Pokémon if you are not ready.
The first method is to simply fast travel to Petalburg City with Brendan (or May). The second method requires you to travel back through the sandstorm in Route 111. This will allow you to explore the Route 111 Central Desert and collect any valuables you may find, including fossils and TMs. Any fossils that you find can be restored at the Devon Corporation by speaking to Mr. Stone.
You may also return to Petalburg by taking Mauville to Route 117, and then to Verdanturf. Continue through the Rusturf tunnel to Rustboro, then from Route 104 through the Petalburg Woods. This option does not promote much exploration, but it does allow you to re-visit areas that you may want to spend more time in.
Enter the gym upon reaching Petalburg City. This is a dojo that requires you to advance through three different sets of rooms. The trainers in each room utilize special items to defeat you in battle, such as X Speed & Accuracy, Guard Spec, HP items, and Dire Hit.
The first set of rooms focus on Speed (left) and Accuracy (right). The second set of rooms focus on Zero Reduction (left), Defense (middle), and Recovery (right). The third set of rooms focus on Strength (left) and One-Hit KO (right). Norman, your dad, will await at the end of the dojo.
Fighting type Pokémon will be extremely effective at this gym. If you are having trouble, try bringing potions to keep your party in peak condition. You may also want to bring special items such as the ones the previous trainers were using. If you are still struggling, you may want to backtrack and catch a fighting Pokémon such as Machop, Hariyama, or Makuhita. Defeat your dad in battle to obtain the Balance badge.

Petalburg City to Gym Battle 6
You will receive HM03 – Surf after leaving your dad’s gym. This will make travel between some of the islands very easy. You may use your new ability to explore some of the areas that you have not been to yet.
Locate Route 118 once you are ready to continue to the next gym leader. Surf across the central bay and keep moving towards Fortree City. Locate Steven and chat with him about Pokémon. Fly with him to reach the Southern Island, then locate and battle Team Aqua (or Magma).
Mega Evolution is fairly new to the series. Your new party member, Latias (or Latios) has the ability to temporarily Mega Evolve. First, you will need to acquire a Key Stone. You have already acquired one from the Mega Bracelet given to you by Steven. Next, you’ll require a Mega Stone that is unique to your Pokémon. Once you have all of the items you need, you can activate Mega Evolution in the fight menu during battle.
Return to Route 118 and continue to Route 119. You will reach the Weather Institute. Head inside to check out the situation. Battle the members of Team Aqua (or Magma) as you move up the stairs. Locate the Admin and defeat her (or him) in battle. Speak to the researcher and acquire your new Pokémon as a reward.
Return to Route 119. You will run into Brendan (or May) who will give you HM02 – Fly after the friendly battle. Finally enter Fortree City and explore the town. The gym will be in the center, but it will be blocked by an invisible object.
Chase after Steven on Route 120. Locate him on the bridge and acquire the Devon scope. Use it to reveal the invisible Pokémon, then clear the path by defeating it in battle. Return to Fortree and use the Devon Scope to enter the gym. Move through the turnstiles to reach Winona.
This gym will focus on flying type Pokémon. This means that electric types will be extremely effective here. Rock types will also be effective. If you are having trouble, try bringing potions to keep your party healthy. Defeat Winona in battle to acquire the Feather Badge. You can now use fly to easily return to areas that you want to further explore.

Fortree City to Gym Battle 7
Continue your journey on Route 121. Your main objective will be to reach Mt. Pyre to find out what Team Aqua (or Magma) is up to. You may also stop by the Safari Zone or Lilycove City on your way there. You may want to visit the department store in Lilycove City to stock up on supplies.
Route 122 will take you directly to Mt. Pyre, but it will require you to surf to the mountain’s entrance. Enter Mt. Pyre and begin battling your way up the mountain. It is recommended that you thoroughly explore the area as you move up.
Eventually you will reach the summit. Fight your way to Archie’s (or Maxie’s) location. Once they take their leave, defeat the Admin in a battle. Acquire the orb from the thankful elder, then retreat back to Slateport City.
Meet the leader of Team Aqua (or Magma) once again by the submarine in Slateport City. Defeat the two gang members and speak to Captain Stern. Use his ferry to reach the secret hideout that you found in Lilycove.
In Team Aqua’s (or Magma’s) hideout, use the green floor panels to move around. You ultimately want to descend through the basement levels until you reach the fourth floor. Defeat the group of gang members before battling another Admin near the sub.
Use the newly opened Route 124 to surf to Mossdeep City. Explore the area before heading to the town’s gym.
This gym will focus on Psychic type Pokémon. This means that Ghost and Dark types will be extremely effective here. There are two leaders of this gym so you will be fighting a Double Battle.
Unfortunately, you may not have trained Ghost or Dark Pokémon. If you are having trouble, you may want to return to Mt. Pyre to train. Furthermore, bring potions to keep your party healthy. The best tactic here is to single out and defeat a Pokémon early on so the two cannot work as a team. Avoid special moves and focus on physical damage. Defeat Liza & Tate to obtain the Mind Badge.

Mossdeep City to Gym Battle 8
Exit the gym to reveal Seafloor Cavern being broken open. Visit Steven to acquire HM07 – Dive before continuing through the dangerous Route 127. You will need to use your new move through deep trenches.
Continue to Route 128 and locate the entrance to Seafloor Cavern. Discover Stern’s submarine and head forward through the puzzling Seafloor Cavern. You may need to battle a few members of Team Aqua (or Magma) while you are here.
You will need to surf, and push boulders using strength to move through all ten rooms. Once you solve the maze you will find yourself in the final room with the leader of Team Aqua (or Magma).
After the revival of Kyogre (or Groudon), regroup with Steve and make your way to Sootopolis City via Route 126 and the Secret Islet. The secret entrance to Sootopolis City will be located in a trench that can be reached using Dive.
Meet with Steven, Wallace, and Brendan (or May) inside of the city. Acquire the Aqua suit (or Magma suit) and make your way to the Cave of Origin. Descend through the cave until you reach the legendary Pokémon.
Use the Pokémon to ride further into the Cave of Origin. Upon reaching the end of the cave, battle the legendary Pokémon to save the region. Head back to the city to acquire the last orb and the Eon Flute.
Finally, head to the Sootopolis City gym to battle Wallace. This is a Water type gym, so Electric and Grass types will be very effective here. If you are having trouble, either stock up on potions or backtrack to train an effective party member. Defeat the leader to obtain the Rain badge – the last official badge.

Sootopolis City – the Pokémon League
Once you are ready to face the Elite Four, surf east on Route 128 until you reach a large waterfall. Use Waterfall to climb up to Ever Grande City. Enter Victory Road and prepare for the challenge that lies ahead.
Battle your way through the cave and collect items that may help you during your last quest. Follow the bridges until you finally come across Wally. This is the final bridge before the Elite Four. Defeat Wally in battle and acquire the Dawn Stone. If you are not ready to enter the Pokémon League, retreat back to Victory Road and level up your party.
Enter the Pokémon League and carefully consider what supplies you may need. There is a Poké Mart before the badge check. You will need stat boosting items, potions, and heals to face the Elite Four (unless you plan to win using brute force). Your opponents will not hesitate to use powerful items such as Full Heal to gain an advantage.
Sidney will be the first Elite opponent. Sidney will be using Dark Pokémon. This means that Fairy, Fighting, and Bug types will be extremely effective here. You should carry Full Heal and Full Restore into this battle due to the nature of Sidney’s dark attacks.
Phoebe will be using Ghost Pokémon. This means that Dark Pokémon will be extremely effective during this battle. You cannot use physical attacks on the Pokémon during this battle, so stick to Fairy, Ghost, and Dark type moves. You should carry PP-boosting items such as Ether and Elixir into the fight.
Glacia will be using Ice Pokémon during this battle. Your best option will be to use Fire Pokémon, but Rock and Steel types will be very effective here too. Switch to a non-Fire Pokémon once Glacia starts using Walrein or you will be vulnerable to a critical Water attack. You should carry Full Heal and Full Restore into this battle.
Drake is the final Elite opponent, and he will use Dragon Pokémon throughout the battle. Dragon and Fairy Pokémon will be extremely effective during this fight. Using a Dragon Pokémon will even the playing field, so you may want to stick to Fairy, Ice, and Rock Pokémon instead. Carry heals and awakening into this battle to avoid the various status-effects that your party may be inflicted with.
Once the Elite Four is out of the way, you will have to defeat the Pokémon Champion. Steven does not focus on any one type of Pokémon, so you will have to vary your party. Skarmory should be defeated using special moves instead of Physical attacks. While battling Aggron, avoid Dragon Pokémon and use a Fighting or Ground types instead.
Claydol benefits the entire party, so you should take him out quickly so he does not boost his party’s defense. Cradily is vulnerable to Ice, Fighting, Bug, and Steel. Use Full Heal and Full Restore to counter any negative effects caused by this Pokémon.
Armaldo is a very powerful Pokémon that can inflict critical damage and lower your defense. Use defense-boosting items to keep your Pokémon in good condition. Metagross will Mega Evolve at the beginning of his turn. Use a strong Pokémon that can handle his critical Physical attacks. Use potions and defense-boosting items to defeat Steven’s last party member.
If you stock up on the correct items, and vary your party, you should have no problem defeating the final five opponents. Defeat Steven to become the Pokémon League Champion and enter the Hall of Fame.
