FIFA Soccer 11 is the gold standard for the soccer experience in gaming. Soccer novices and footie fanatics alike should find many, many hours of enjoyment here, and this embarassment of riches is likely to remain fresh and playable well into the next year.

Apart from a few incredibly minor tweaks, we can't think of anything anything else EA Sports can do to improve their game on the pitch.

FIFA 11 is going to be in a very close race with NHL 11 for Sports Game of the Year honors. On many levels, FIFA has really thrown pretty much everything into this game and all others have some huge catching up to do. FIFA is fun to play and available for most every platform from PS3 to cell phone. The addition of the creation center has put FIFA 11 in a class by itself, straddling the fine line between reality and gaming amazingly well.

FIFA 11 doesn't redefine the football game, nor does it bring with it bold or surprising ways to play. What it does, however, is refine an already superlative game, taking nearly every aspect and polishing it to help create a whole that’s notably superior to its predecessors. It’s excellence, not innovation, that wins out, and that's surely no bad thing; for the next twelve months at least this is likely to be the best football experience available, and FIFA's looking like retaining its crown in convincing fashion.

After scoring a goal, hold down a button or two and watch your in-game counterpart fly like an airplane or get his shoes shined by a teammate. One part of FIFA 11's visual package that is off a bit is player likeness. I found that for a lot of players, their look is off a bit, even for some of the worlds biggest superstars. FIFA 11 has an incredible audio presentation. From crowd chants that you can customize, to the awesome soundtrack that plays in the menus during replays and at halftime, everything is awesome. For international matches, the national anthems are a nice touch, and really add to the atmosphere and feel of representing your country.

For now, FIFA 11 is as close to footballing nirvana as you can currently get and it almost manages to get all of the fundamentals spot on. It feels and handles unlike any other football game currently available and it's about as close to the beautiful game as you can get. Some of the gameplay refinements might not be apparent when you play, so it's not the huge leap forward you might want, but there's enough new modes and features to make FIFA 11 a tempting prospect for yet another year. It's getting harder and harder to review FIFA every year, as it's possibly the most reliable goal scorer around, hitting the target again and again. FIFA 11 is happily no different.

Thanks to key improvements to the core gameplay this year, FIFA 11 is the best and most addictive version of the game yet. The improved player characteristics and animations result in a deep and rewarding experience that feels as exciting and unpredictable as the real thing. It also boasts key online and offline improvements, with full 11 versus 11 online play for the first time in the genre, and a new career mode that brings together the single-player game in a much more enjoyable way than before.

FIFA 11 in gameplay terms is really only a minor improvement over FIFA 10, but the bolstered Career Mode adds a significant boost to the depth and longevity on offer. If you're still happily plugging away at last year's instalment however, you might not find enough of a reason to shell out all over again, but die-hard fans and newcomers to the series will be impressed by how well the game plays and how much there is to do. It by no means reinvents the wheel (or the ball for that matter), but FIFA 11 is a superb game that retains its title as the best football game that money can buy.

You could argue that FIFA 11 doesn't do enough to warrant a purchase if you already own FIFA 10, but small changes on paper have made for some significant differences on the pitch. FIFA 11 feels far more realistic than its predecessor, while also packing in a smattering of new features. Yes, you could get by with last year's game, but you will be missing out on what will probably be the best sports game of 2010.

The latest edition of FIFA may not be that different from the last but the subtle improvements make it play so much better. This really is the best version yet.

Soccer is a free-flowing game of creativity and skill, and I can experience that on the pitch in FIFA 11. Unfortunately, weak spots like the game's bare career mode hold it back and keep the entire package from being Total Football.

FIFA 11 is by no means the sizeable step forward that FIFA 10 was, but that doesn't mean that you'll be disappointed with this effort. There are little nuances and tweaks to the gameplay that people will enjoy, namely the Personality Plus integration. I still found annoyances with the lack of awareness in the artificial intelligence and the fact that your Be A Pro accomplishments don't carry over is a real bummer.

At its best FIFA 11 is enormous fun and brilliantly engineered, but in its battle to be more varied and realistic it has lost some of its momentum, and off the pitch returns are starting to diminish too.

Whether or not you choose Fifa 11 over Pro Evolution Soccer is more likely to be a matter of taste and tribal loyalty, but Fifa fans will be even more delighted with this year's offering than they were with Fifa 10.

The changes, especially exploit fixes, will please most but annoy those who feel FIFA 10 didn't need to be messed with - but there's a simple solution there: don't buy it. To everyone else, this is a mighty refined football game, just not quite the Earth-mover FIFA 10 was.
