Monaco Mobile Solar Charger Review

solar charger

School is out and a hot, relaxing summer is here to greet us. Relax, take your mind off the next kegger party- eh, I mean study group. We have just the thing for anyone planning on hitting the beach, hiking a trail or just planning on catching some sleep while enjoying their favorite gadgets.

Thanks to our friends over at Wirelessground.com, we had the privilege to check out the new Monaco Mobile Solar Charger. This little rectangle box might just become your best friend during these hot sunshiny days. The Monaco is a solar charger that will take in the sun's rays and spit out some lovely juice for your phone, MP3 player, portable gaming or anything else that will charge via USB.

From the Box:

  • Solar battery charger
  • USB charger
  • USB cable (Mini USB)
  • USB cable (3.0 DC)
  • Mini-USB adapter
  • Micro-USB adapter

Design:

What the Monaco has going on is a black plastic finish with the solar panel in front. What may appear bulky to some in size will be made up in lightness. Overall it's about the size of an iPhone, and even a bit thicker, but the weight is hardly noticeable. The exact dimensions are 55.5 x 105.8 x 14.5mm with a weight of 3.3 oz. Right below the solar panel is an LED display light that will give off a red signal when it's receiving power, and turns bright green when fully charged. Lastly, we have the very bottom, on which the AC and USB connections can be found.

Performance:

After testing this device out, I was overall very satisfied with how much juice this little guy could hold. With the device fully charged, I was able in turn to completely charge an iPod Touch and my phone before running out of power entirely on the Monaco. There are multiple options to charge up the device; a charge can be initiated by use of the Sun's rays, a USB connection from a computer or by the AC adapter supplied. All three options will fully charge the device and eventually accumulate the same amount of juice but will differ in the actual charging times. If you plan to charge via solar power, then you're looking at around an eight hour charge time compared to a six hour charge time from the USB computer connection or AC adapter.

Final Thoughts:

The Monaco really is a great gadget to have especially for back up and emergency reasons. The charger with the connectors that comes with the device will cover and charge just about anything under the sun. Overall the size might not be thrilling to most but will fit in a bag or pocket and more importantly, this device is in fact very lightweight which is a huge plus in my book. I definitely recommend picking one up this summer, and they're currently on sale right now at Wirelessground.com at $39.95! So whether you're hitting the nearest fishing spot with a buddy or relaxing on the beach, the Monaco is a gadget that is worth having, just to keep your phone or other gadgets alive and charged.
