Development

Call of Duty Advanced Warfare is set to be the eleventh game in the main series of Call of Duty titles, it’s also going to be the first Call of Duty game that is going to be developed primarily by Sledgehammer Games, the same studio that worked on Modern Warfare 3 alongside Infinity Ward. Call of Duty Advanced Warfare was first officially announced on May 1st of 2014 alongside news that it would be released in November.

In the May edition of popular gaming magazine Game Informer, Sledgehammer Games made the announcement that they game was set to be running on a brand new engine. Dedicated fans of the series remained skeptical despite this seemingly good news, claiming that a new engine would be to difficult to create in such a short space of time between main line Call of Duty Entries.

This was addressed by Sledgehammer Games Co-Founder Michael Condrey in Edge Magazine where he comments that some of the code from older Call of Duty entries does remain, but that the engine has been largely changed and that the old engine is unrecognisable.  Call of Duty Advanced Warfare would feature female soldiers in the multiplayer, similar to those found in Call of Duty Ghosts.

A feature that has been heavily focused on by both Sledgehammer Games and the media is the game’s animations. Utilizing new equipment that is said to be on par with that being used on the set of David Cameron’s upcoming film Avatar 2, Sledgehammer Games have said that they will be able to create “near photo-realistic world unlike any Call of Duty before.”

Thus far, fans have considered this claim to be hyperbole given that the “near photo-realistic” visuals in regards to the facial animations are not all that impressive when compared to some titles that already exist that were using (comparably) inferior equipment. One fan has said that the on screen representation of Kevin Spacey was impressive, but he lingered in the uncanny valley.

On June 6th of 2014, High Moon Studios confirmed that they would be handling the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 builds of the game. However, they also claimed to be working on the Wii U build of Call of Duty Advanced Warfare; this build of the game on Nintendo’s struggling eighth generation console has yet to actually be officially announced by Activision. This is likely due to poor sales on the part of the Wii U. It’s entirely possible that Activision is holding the game back intentionally in the hope that Super Smash Bros will ship more hardware this holiday season, thus making a Wii U build of Call of Duty Advanced Warfare financially viable.

Story

Call of Duty Advanced Warfare (6)

Set in the year 2054, the near future equivalent of the worlds prominent developed countries have fallen victim to attacks directed at their military infrastructure. Following these crippling attacks, the worlds foremost super power is no longer a country, it’s in fact a PMC (private military corporation).

The PMC known as Atlas is ran by a man with true conviction in his belief that the United States has failed in their attempts at installing democracies across the globe for over a century. Mitchell, an Ex U.S. Marine joins CEO Jonathan Irons to begin his war against the United States.

Gameplay

Call of Duty Advanced Warfare (2)

With Call of Duty Advanced Warfare being set in a near future that is saturated with hi-tech equipment and gear that ranges from a hyper advanced arsenal that features hover bikes and specialized strike drones to powered exoskeletons that lend the soldier new and unexpected levels of strength. While we don’t have much information at the minute, players are said to be able to choose between their standard ammunition and “Directed Energy Weapons” that will apparently change the dynamic of gameplay considerably.

Somewhat similar to the player navigation found in Titanfall, the Exoskeletons that gird the soldiers are expected to bring a greater sense of verticality to the combat through the use of boosted jumping capabilities. Activision has said, “Powerful exoskeletons evolve every aspect of a soldier’s battle readiness, enabling combatants to deploy with an advanced lethality and eliminating the need for specialization.

The introduction of this gameplay mechanic delivers enhanced player movement and verticality through boost jumps and grappling, covert cloaking abilities, and biomechanics that provide unparalleled strength, awareness, endurance, and speed. With the advent of the exoskeleton and newly advanced armor and weaponry, every soldier commands tactical freedom in any terrain unlike ever before, fundamentally changing the way gamers play Call of Duty across all modes.”

Another feature of the game that leads into the heavy multiplayer focus of the Call of Duty games is earning points. These points can be earned during multiplayer matches, similar to EXP found in other games. However, these points can also be earned in the single player campaign and can then be carried across into the multiplayer suite where they can be used to customise and improve the players exoskeleton to increase its combat effectiveness.
