Scalebound is an upcoming title with an exclusivity deal with Microsoft that is currently in development under Platinum Games. Platinum Games first found mainstream fame with their massively popular action hack and slash game Bayonetta which will be bundled into the upcoming Bayonetta 2 Wii U exclusive package. Platinum Games also found underground success with their fast paced third person shooter Vanquish in 2010.
Scalebound is set to be directed by Hideki Kamiya and published by Micrsoft Studios although there is no known planned release date for the game. Scalebound will be released exclusively on Microsoft’s eighth generation home console, the Xbox One.
Given the nature of Platinum Games past works, staff and planned works, it’s no surprise that details on Scalebound are scarce. Here’s what we know so far. Directing the game, is Hideki Kamiya. Hideki has what would appear to be a career working on games that have all been well received by both the public and by critics.
In 1996 Hideki was the Systems Planner on Resident Evil and then in 1998 he was the Director of Resident Evil 2.
He then went on to be Director of Devil May Cry in 2001 and Viewtiful Joe in 2003. In 2006 Mr Kamiya was both on the Story and Director seats for the niche hit title Okami before moving onto the smash hit action hack and slash title Bayonetta in 2009 once again as Story and Director leads.
While no release window was announced, the game was first unveiled during Microsoft’s E3 2014 press conference. Hideki Kamiya was responsible for the reveal, stating that Scalebound would be offering “action at a whole new scale”.
The game was revealed via a CG trailer without gameplay that depicted a soldier in a jungle environment that is accompanied by a large dragon like creature that attacks and kills a smaller creature. As the trailer progresses we see the human character heft a massive sword and do battle with a variety of monsters with different powers of some sort.
Microsoft has rated the game as “18” for mature audiences only and has described the game as “The next great adventure from critically-acclaimed developer Platinum Games and renowned Game Director Hideki Kamiya, Scalebound transports you to a distant, hostile world.”
At the time of writing, there are no indicators that we’re going to see any playable versions of Scalebound. Nor are we likely to see any screenshots of the game at this time. Given the track record of Platinum Games titles however, it is safe to assume that the game will take a stylish approach to combat given the nature of previous titles like Devil May Cry and Bayonetta.
At this time, we know next to nothing about the characters or creatures of the game apart from the fact that the creatures all have a distinctly draconic, Kaiju-esque design to them. The main character in the reveal trailer would appear to be Human.
It’s unknown at this time if Scalebound will make use of any kind of class based system for its gameplay.
Note: This wiki will be updated once we have more information about the game.
