Borderlands 2 – XP Experience and Leveling Guide

In Borderlands 2 there are 50 Experience levels with each level reached by gaining XP points.  As with all games experience is gained when you kill enemies, this includes enemies you kill, enemies your team mates kill and enemies under your team mates control (Maya’s Toughlock).  You also gain experience points when you complete a level/mission and do a location discovery.  When you fight and kill enemies and take on missions that are a higher level then you are you gain more XP points and get better items rewards.  Taking on weaker enemies and levels gets you of course less XP points, this means eventually playing lower levels is almost pointless if you are trying to level.

When you increase your levels you are granted spendable skill points in which you can use to increase skill levels for whoever you are playing.  The skill points increase (as shown in the table) the higher the level you are the more skill points you get when you reach the next level.   As you increase skill level it also takes a lot more XP to make it to the next level as shown in the table its a large jump between levels once you get past level 35 its a huge jump in EXP needed for the next level.

Spending Skill Points and Skill Tree

With Skill points you will not start earning them until you reach level 5 where you will be granted 1 skill point, you need this skill point to unlock your characters action skill, so really you don’t actually get to start increasing skills until level 6.   In total when you reach level 50 you will have 1035 skill points to assign with level 50 granting you 45 Skill points to assign as with any skill points be selective in which skills you want to unlock and build up.

Each character has three skill trees each with 6 levels or “tiers” where you can use your skill points, you will only be able to spend skill points on the first “tier” when you hit level 6 and the second set of skills can only be unlocked when you have at least 5 points spent in Tier 1.  The third tier is unlocked once you have 10 skill points spent.  This will happen for each tier of skills.

Special Skills

There are special skills in borderlands 2 that grant unique and powerful abilities also known as “Game Changers”.  In general these skills are very powerful and only need 1 skill point to make a huge different in the characters ability to use this skill.  These Game Changers are found at various places within the skill tree level.  The second special skill is called the Capstone, this is a accumulation of that skill tree’s strengths and bonuses, this skill is often very powerful but can only be used once at a time.
